Woomera is....well, weird! The Lonely Planet describes it as a "drab government town with an interesting Lions Club Aircraft and Missile Park". Drab it is, interesting isn't the best choice of word! It was more of a store room for any ind of junk that they could relate to the place. Outside there was an impressive collection of missiles and aircraft thing-ies but inside was terrible. Yes it had a vast collection of rocket memorabilia from the space rocket programmers and British Weapons testing but there was no text to explain what actually was going on and what it actually was. The best part, for me, was the rocks and minerals collection, where the "gold nugget" was actually a badly scrunched up piece of gold and silver foil. It gave us a laugh at the very ... read more

Oct 26 Ceduna to Elliston Farmland on one side and the ocean on the other. Amazing what they grow in the sand. Large grain silos at Streaky Bay. Nice scenic little town. The scenic road from Streaky Bay to Seale Bay/Point Labatt was not sealed all the way, gravel was rough so we turned back. Stayed at Waterloo Bay Caravan Park in Elliston. Walked the town, which was very quiet and the businesses quite spread out. Drove a 12km scenic drive loop with Sculptures along the way. Really very nice, beautiful scenery of the ocean, cliffs and beaches. Ford still makes a Falcon here!! Oct 27 Elliston to Wallaroo The 91km from Elliston to Lock was a very quiet drive. 2 other vehicles, going the opposite direction. There must be some combining being done because we ... read more

Arriving in Adelaide Day 30 October 31, 2008 Happy Halloween! They do celebrate Halloween in Australia, but doesn’t seem to be as big a deal as in the U.S. I didn’t need a costume, I looked scary enough after two days on that train. Although it was a good trip, we were ready to get off the Ghan. I had a problem sleeping last night, mainly because it was so cold and Joe didn’t do much better. The view from the train window this morning was more of the same…red dirt and rocks and scrubby plants. But as we neared Port Augusta, we saw mountains, towns, rivers, farms, ocean inlets and more kangaroos. There were miles and miles of wheatfields and it was harvest time. Our big excitement was the spotting of about 20 emus! They ... read more

Hi All, I made it, I'm in Australia!! Flew into Adelaide on the 14th. Getting through customs was interesting, to prevent invasives, they have strict policies on food stuffs etc. and to enforce, they come through the baggage claim area with a food sniffing dog!!! I had been given some trail mix, and I also had rice and cereal in my food bag and that all had to get tossed. And of course my fond experiences with security continued. I used 1 of my small panniers for carry on for my helmet and a couple of books, I thought I had cleaned everything else out of it, but some how I missed the Brooks saddle service kit. I went through security in SF OK, but in Sydney they found the small saddle tensioning tool. A small ... read more

Just got back from our winnery tour of the Barossa Valley and have had the best time drinking lots and lots of wine! Our tour guide from he Groovy Grape company picked us up really early (about 7.55!) and took us first to the biggest rocking horse in the world - it really was massive. We then went onto a huge dam called 'The Whispering Wall' where one person walks across to one end and the acoustics mean that you can have a conversation with someone like they were right next to you. After this our tour guide said to everybody 'Right, lets get pissed!" and took us to our first winnery at Jacob's Creek (our wine guide didn't really know anything about the wine process but knew lots of facts he'd obviously got out of ... read more

Introduction Today we headed to the Barossa for a Heysen trail walk near Tanunda. How to get there ... From Adelaide travel north to Gawler, and once in Gawler turn right up the Barossa way. Follow this road through Sandy Creek, Lyndoch and on to Tanunda. Maggie Beer's farm shop is 4 km North of Tanunda (see Pheasant farm route map). The walk is south of Tanunda on Rifle Range Road (See 'From Maggies to walk start' map). The third map is of the 11 km walk (Our walk) along the Heysen trail entering into Kaiser Stuhl Conservation Park. What happened ... We started off at Maggie Beer's farm shop at Tanunda. It was part of my birthday celebrations that instead of going out for a restaurant meal on the day, and that we would go ... read more

After a day looking round the city I thought it might be nice to get out into the country side, and why not kill two birds with one stone by taking in a wine tour. Edith being such a wine lover was really up for it so we set off at 9am for a full day trip. First stop in the Barossa Valley was the Wolf Blass winery. Tried about 8 different wines including an extra special one which we had to pay a further $5 to try as it cost $200 a bottle. Shortly after that we went for dinner so I decided to try Kangaroo again. Quite like it now but it is a bit more chewy than steak. After dinner we set off to a further 4 vineyards, I had been determined all ... read more

G'day mate, We headed up to the Barossa Valley as Rob was feeling a little better. We started in an area called Tanunda where you bought wine passes for $99. This entitled 2 people to go to all the vineyards, collect 6 bottles of wine to the value of $20-$25 a bottle and lots of tastings! We started at Jacobs Creek which was pretty cool and very modern. We tasted many different wines, it's a really good idea because you get to try loads of different types of wines you normally wouldn't, as you're not wasting any money. Obviously if you don't want too much, you can poor it away and if you didn't i think after the first place you would be hammered. From here i got a late picked riesling which is sweeter than ... read more

Rising early we set forth for our first official wine tour. Clover and I grew up working from time to time as wine pickers in Southern Oregon and figured it would be nice to pass through wine country viewing it from a different angle. Thus we set out to see what the entire hubbub around the Barossa Valley Shiraz was all about. Barossa Valley starts a little over an hour from Adelaide and has come to be one of Australia's most internationally recognized wine regions. This is where you’ll find Jacob’s Creek, Wolf Blass, and even Cockatoo Ridge (widely known for its Yellow Tail label). At the current moment there is approximately a 100 wine cellars (wineries that have their own label) within the Barossa Valley. In the early days this region was first offered to ... read more
