After the pickup from outside the hostel we drove out of Adelaide through the very scenic, almost European looking countryside of the Adelaide Hills and onto the Barossa Valley. It was quite strange to look at, being all green hills and trees- it seemed almost familiar but with the distinctively Australian Eucalyptus trees lending it a slightly off-kilter atmosphere. It was a bit like the almost but not quite realistic looking human features that modern CGI can produce- the ... read more

A short trip to the Barossa Valley staying in the Novotel Resort. The view from the room and from the Restaurant is great. A wonderful layout of buildings just below the rim of the hill, arced around the valley leading down to the river. The grounds were landscaped with a mixture of Australian natives and small groups of vines. During dinner we watched the weather pass over the hills on the other side of the valley. The hills were hidden beneath rain clouds, then bathed in a deep orange during sunset. The food was good for both dinner and at the breakfast service. The wines were overpriced which was strange when your in the heart of the vineyards. There are plenty of walks in the resort and along the river, and the golf course just over ... read more

We had a long drive yesterday. We left Mildura in the rain, entertaining campers no end as the motor home slid all around in the mud as we tried to drive up the next level of the caravan park. People were outside with umbrellas watching and offering advice - not a lot happens in caravan parks! Once we'd finally left the park, we went into town and into Stefano’s cafe for morning tea and delicious cake. The shelves were full of breads, pasta, sauces and all sorts of interesting food in jars - I bought some Mildura pink salt and we also bought some tasty honey and beer sourbread. Attached is his bar and bottle shop and behind that, the art gallery which I think is managed by his wife. On the walls were canvases of ... read more
