We arrived into Adelaide at 7:30am. After getting our bags we found the skybus which would take us into the city. We were told to make sure that our train was going the next day due to the Victoria floods. So we ran inside and checked and the train would be running as far as they knew. The rail tracks are elevated above the water at the moment. So we headed into the city and Catriona and I were already booked into the same hostel so that was awesome. We put our bags in storage as the room wasn't ready yet and along with another girl from the train who was also staying at the YHA we walked into town. Adelaide is a really pretty city. The tallest building is 34 stories. There are no skyscrapers ... read more

Glenelg 13 Jan (Thursday) Travelled down to Glenelg (the beach front of Adelaide - 20 mins by car from city centre) to catch the rays... it rained all day. That said I'm staying in the Oaks Plaza Pier so the room is quality, best of the trip so far, socan't complain. I'm booked in for approx 5 days (perhaps more depending on my changing travelling plans) It looks like a bit of the Great Ocean Road is closed and Horsham has flooded a bit so I've resorted to plan z. Beach in Glenelg for a while, and eventually head to Murray Bridge, Broken Hill and Mildura. The latter two for two rounds of the Aussie champs. With a few meetings in Adelaide to boot Gillman again and Sidewinders for a few. Hopefully tomorrow's weather will be ... read more

It's taken me a while to get used to backpacking in Australia. The hostels are cleaner and better run than those in Asia, but seem much less fun to stay in. Pretty much everyone is working or planning to work over here, or is just visiting Oz for a couple of weeks - I've only met one person in 4 weeks who is actually travelling. The main consequence of this is that no-one has any desire to explore their surroundings. In Asia, everyone wanted to go out and investigate places where they were staying for a day or two - here, most people spend their time working or looking for jobs. Australia is also too much like being back home in the UK - lots of rules and regulations about what you can and can't do. ... read more

Well I have been here a while now and starting to learn my way around. I haven't really been to the City enough, am thinking maybe I am spending too much time dossing around doing things like this so I am going to make an effort to go and explore more. I went to the botanic gardens which is like the Dane John Gardens in Canterbury 100x nicer. Went and saw Port Elliot and South of Adelaide a bit. Also went to a crazy German-esque town called Handorf up in the Hills after going to a conservation park where I saw my first kangaroo (that was alive, I'd already eaten a bit of one and seen some dead on the road.) Got to hold a koala like a proper tourist too. I've also been for a ... read more

i got bored in the barossa and ventured down to adelaide and the beach town glenelg. i use beach town loosely though as it was still definitely closer to winter than spring at this time. there really isn't much to write about adelaide. maybe it was because of the weather, but it just wasn't that interesting of a city. although i did go to a neat art gallery (obviously) on the campus of the university of adelaide and saw a huge rodin exhibit. i thought of mes dijonettes and our 6 fingered guide at le musée rodin à paris!! ... read more

Today we arose after a good nights sleep and went to collect our rental car from Thrifty. The car was parked in a parking lot over the road but the lift was not working so we had to walk up many flights to find the vehicle. The vehicle we booked was a Nissan X-Trail 4WD. I must say it looks very smart. Armed with maps and instructions we set off to find Victor Harbour but somehow finished up at Historic Glenelg. It was a beautiful sunny day so we walked up the beach for miles to a boat launching ramp and then returned to the Marina where we had lunch looking at the boats. We must say the Aussies certainly do marinas well with a mix of boats and commercial use which is a pleasure to ... read more
