Our final breakfast on the Nimrod was more basic than the others, perhaps reflecting that we had run out of food, or perhaps more likely that two of the crew had been throwing up all night thanks to the storm. We took a bus from Port Douglas, where we moored down to Cairns and being thoroughly exhausted did little but drink coffee, and go to the cinema. This is something that I had no intentions of doing, but the thought of two hours in a comfy chair that wasnt rocking and rolling was very appealing to me. I ended up going for a few drinks that evening with people I met at my hostel, and at the start of the night I couldnt decided if they were boring, shy or that there was some sort of ... read more

Since the last entry, Michelle and I booted around Syndey a bit, flew out to Ayer's Rock, and then caught a flight for Cairns. Sydney is a cool city but in the end, it's really just another city. The harbour with the Opera House and harbour bridge is very scenic and has lots o shops and restaurants. Seeing the opera house up close is actually kind of surreal. We then went to the Syndey aquarium. Highlights of the aquarium are the crocodile, the open water shark exhibit, and a large Great Barrier Reef tank. The next morning we flew out to Ayer's Rock Resort. The resort is a collection of a few different hotels and a campground that is the only settlement within 100's of kilometers of Ayer's Rock itself. The resort will have you believe ... read more

The rough seas and awkward orientation of the Nimrod meant we had to enter straight in over the side - a considerable drop. I had to put my rescue diver training to practice when Lizette's Inflator hose ripped straight out of her BCD on entering the water leaving her sinking and unable to do much about it. I held her up and towed her round to the back of the boat so she could get out and get it fixed - leaving we with a horrible swim back to the entry point! Otherwise the dive was fine - infact one of the nicest I have done. A huge rock pinnacle topped with a a beautiful coral garden with lots of clown fish (and no Kerry, I wont post one back for you). There was so much ... read more

So, this morning I wanted to leave Brisbane and keep heading north to a lovely little town called Noosa. I packed my bags, grabbed my hat and sat on the step of the hostel waiting for the courtesy bus down to the bus station and then i hear "Hey cowgirl, need a ride?" I looked up in to the handsome face of the hostel bus driver, nice young man, grabbed my bags and loaded them into the bus and i jumped up in the front seat. Chatting away as we headed down to the bus station he says "so you had lots of 'fun' while in Brisbane" nah, i told him id been very well behaved! "We'll have to change that then" he says winking across at me. Now call me cynical but i think hes ... read more

Days 121-124 After an overnight bus we arrived in Airlie Beach about 9. We couldn't check in until 3, which was so annoying as all we wanted to do was sleep! So, we checked out the town, had breakfast and made our way to the lagoon, which was really nice and tried to get some kip. You can't swim in the sea here because there are lots of dangerous jellyfish so the nice government of Australia make lagoons for people to swim in. You wouldn't get that in Blighty! Once we checked in we had another wander and popped into a shop to LOOK at some aborigonal paintings and ended up buying a custom painted top notch 4 ft didgeridoo! The guy caught us while we were too tired to say no! Should be good though! ... read more

TODAY IS LISA'S BIRTHDAY. Up earlyish to get the bus to go to the Zoo! not just any Zoo... Steve Irwins Austalia Zoo. He has a house here, but we were told as he does a lot of travelling that we probably wouldn't see him. The coach driver said that if we do see him he'll probably be on his red motorbike. About half an hour in the zoo, a red motorbike drove right past our faces. Our jaws dropped and Skinny got quite excited! Yes we saw Steve Irwin, and his little boy was riding on the front. As Skinny made a bit of noise we grabbed some attention, not good though. We realised that an old man was tagging along, or stalking us more like. Everywhere we went he went, and we couldn't shake ... read more

Taking a chance to spend some time with my grandparents I had agreed to head off for a weekend with them and the naturalist club they were members of. My uncle questioned whether spending the weekend with retired people was really what I wanted to do but to me it was a great chance to spend some time with them and see something of Australia. As my grandparents correctly told me before I went the other naturalists were all interesting people. Many of them were botanists, geologists or something similar. Most of them were eccentric and could talk forever, which was tiresome at times, but generally just meant there was always something interesting to be listening to. The weekend was spent in a giant ‘caldera’ - I use the inverted commas as it’s not a true ... read more

PHOTOS COMING LATER Sitting here in Buzz’s living room I’m finally getting round to writing about what I’ve been up to in Australia 11days after arriving. Early on the 3rd of March I landed at Brisbane airport after my nightmare journey from India. My stomach was back on track and having had a couple of hours kip on the last leg of my plane journey I was feeling ready to take on the new Continent. My Uncle and his family had arranged a short holiday to Sea World followed by a Short stay at Byron Bay to celebrate his new job and they were kind enough to invite me along. So a couple of hours after landing I found myself sitting in the middle of Sea world with my Uncle Charles, my Aunt in law MJ ... read more

Another early breakfast, and another great two morning dives this time on a site called "Pixie Pinnacle". Then after lunch we dove "Sharky's Nipple" - not the official name for that dive site, but one acquired apparantly after the boats hostess Sharky dived into the water with a top which quickly lifted itself up. Well thats the story anyway... The dives were all fantastic, but as the day carried on we were diving in increasingly rought conditions. Visibility was not great, but the amount of aquatic flora and fauna more than compensated for this. The swim back from Sharky's nipple was a bit of a mission to say the least. Torrential rain and large waves made seeing the boat almost impossible, and Kim, Lizette and I were forced to keep our regulators in our mouths for ... read more
