So far Australia has been very kind to me. We've been having fantastic weather since coming to Townsville. It has been about 29 everyday and the humidity is still not bad since it's not quite summer yet. I've taken full advantage of this by sitting out on the balcony with my book most days, taking the dog for walks and of course going down to the beach for a swim. Everyone keeps telling me that Townsville beach isn't really a great beach but it looks like one through this Canadians eyes. One weekend soon we'll head down to Arlie Beach to explore there but this weekend I decided to stay in Townsville. The big plans for the weekend are to go to the Billabong Sanctuary where we can see crocs being fed which i'm really excited ... read more

After 36 hours of flights and airports I was relieved to finally be in Australia. I flew into Cairns (which happened to be a bit rainy) and met up with JP who informed me that we already had plans to meet up with some friends for lunch. So I didn't change or shower just hopped in the car and was off exploring Cairns. We walked the streets in between rain showers and checked out the restaurants and bars along the waterfront. Much of the next two days was spent doing the same since the rain kept up from doing to many other activities. After a few rainy days in Cairns we headed up north towards Port Dogulas, stopping on the way to visit a place called Kuranda. To get to Kuranda you take a skyrail up ... read more

As most of you probably know, I am going on my European trip very soon. I actually leave home on Sunday afternoon, and come back a whole eight weeks (and a bit) later. I've cancelled the paper, set the video to record all my shows (very important), and started to think about packing my bag. For those out there who aren't in the loop on my itinerary, I'll give a quick rundown. On Monday I fly to Hong Kong where I stay for two nights. Then on to Dublin, Madrid, Barcelona, Avignon, Paris, Brugge, Amsterdam, Berlin, Dresden, Munich, Lucerne, Interlaken, Florence, and finally Rome. Hopefully, if all goes to plan, I'll be back in Brisbane on the 21st October and then back in Townsville that same night. There are a few things I need to get, ... read more

We spent the morning on the beach enjoying the Australian winter weather and after lunch left the pikey campsite and headed on towards Townsville. It was quite a drive and we arrived in the late afternoon just in time to purchase some supplies and book our ferry to Magnetic Island on the following day. The tourist centre had provided us with free camping information and we headed off to a nearby site. As the sun was setting we were unable to locate the site and had to choose the next option - a BP truck station just south of Townsville. We had no problem finding it and settled in to our concrete surroundings for some dinner and goon. What followed was the most entertaining night in Australia so far. We were approached by 2 truckers and ... read more

Hey guys! So, I am officially sitting here, on the other side of the planet in my single at JCU Townsville. It’s actually awesome, my single here is only marginally smaller than my double at Stine…although the mattress and pillow they provided me with kind of smell funny and are a little damp…and I don’t have air conditioning (it’s the depth of winter here now, and its 70 degrees, I am perfectly comfortable in a t-shirt, summer is going to be brutal). I also have crazy limited internet access; I get 100 mb for the semester. If I go over I have to pay up with money I’d really rather spend on a trip to Sydney. I don’t know how I’m going to survive, I’m already illin’ for a manga fix. Downloading pictures to put up ... read more

5th July - Reef Aquarium One of the main reasons we came to Townsville was to visit the Reef Aquarium, recommended by the Lonely Planet guidebook. We were a wee bit dissapointed with it. It was interesting and they had lots of fish but 'Lucky T' the sea turtle must have been feeling ill that day as he wasnt at home! :-( After the aquarium we wandered along the coast through the Anzac Memorial Gardens which were lovely - I'm a sucker for palm trees and there were loads! The gardens were just in front of the marina so the views were beautiful and the weather in Townsville always seems to be great. We had lunch at a cocktail bar / restaurant which was on a platform above the sea so had a lovely view ... read more

Unfortunately things have not gone to smoothly for us, we have been 3 weeks and more stuck here. Today finally the shaft is being put back and hopefully we will be in the water tomorrow morning.....this is happening as I am writing this entry so we won't know, but I can say that is looking very promesing. Last weekend we packed the car and with the boys head north of Townsville all the way to Mission Beach. We stoped along the way at Taylors Beach, located 24kms east of Ingham and stayed the night in this quiet coastal haven. Looked into Lucinda's acclaimed engineering feature the 5.76km sugar conveying jetty and off shore loading facility. the conveying jetty follows the curvature of the earth and the longest of its kind in the world. We checked out Port ... read more
