After a few drinks one night playing poker I for some reason unknown to me now accepted an invitation to go on a four day fishing trip the following weekend. I guess I was thinking of the fun i'd had casting my line of the dock at the cottage and when tired running up the hill for a hot meal and some t.v. This however was going to be 'real' fishing! We had to leave for a near by town on thursday night and get groceries and get a few hours shut eye. The wake up call was at 3am! We had loaded the boats the night before and rushed off to a tiny little river to catch the high tide to get to our island where we would spend three long nights. Upon arriving to ... read more

I felt almost refreshed when I awoke at 7am for breakfast. The morning trip was to an aborigine cave which had paintings on the walls that were more than 500 years old. The dingy dropped us off group by group and we made our way up some steep steps that seemed to go on and on. It reminded me of the ice climb all over again. When we arrived on the boardwalk at the top of the steps, we took turns to look at the cave entrance. It was all a bit of a disappointment - not many paintings were visible from our vantage point and the cave was tiny. We couldn’t even go inside as it was barriered off. Even Lou, our crew member guide, apologised as she had thought there would be a bit ... read more

The debate may never end as to the best way to see the East Coast - buy a car, rent a car, rent a campervan, hitch or get the bus. There is no doubt that you own wheels give total flexibility, but the reliability or lack of it with some of the wrecks on offer in Cairns doesn’t make it a lot of financial sense or fun. We played safe and bought a hop on / hop off bus ticket to Sydney - a mere AUD$278 for 3 months. We rolled on south missing out Mission Beach and arrived in Townsville. The initial impressions were that it’s reputation was unfounded - but we still left for Magnetic Island with 90% of those departing the service. Maggie is the backpacker island - a short and price competitive ... read more

Hello all. Since last time I wrote I haven't done too much worth writing about except the Rugby League World Cup has started. Luckily the first game of the Cup was being played at Townsville's Dairy Farmers Stadium. It was PNG vs. England and although the stadium wasn't even close to being full it was a good chance for me to learn the game. England ended up winning which most of the Aussies didn't like but it was a good game none the less. This past weekend another game was held here in Townsville but this time it was Australia playing which meant the stadium was packed. We had really good seats right behind the players. I mean if I wanted to I could have easily jumped on one of there backs....I didn't really want to ... read more

Hello again, I have arrived in a little place called Townsville after travelling for around 14 hours on a coach. The driver asked me at the end of the journey if I had been hybernating because I actually slept for the entire journey! Not sure if that was because of the hangover of the exhausting week that id had... Friday day was amazing, I have another rather large bruise covering my left knee which was basically from running up a fence away from a cow! She had massive horns and was moving very fast towards me and the next thing I knew I was sat on the top rail...I dont think I have ever moved so fast! Friday night, well what can I say, I dont remember much! Me and Danni were pretty wasted after only ... read more

Well its been a while but I have a day off (don’t feel like doing homework) so I can type for a bit. Classes started a few months ago and im taking a rainforest populations/community class, intro to GIS and doing my literature review for my project next semester. It seems like the same as last semester, tons of work. Before classes started Crystal and I had a marine animal behaviour block class that went to Orpheus Island. The work was ok (we snorkeled all day looking at fish) but the off time was the best. We found tons of small whip snakes to play with (determined them to be slightly venomous after a friend got bit on the finger), an energetic echidna and then manta rays. So all in all we had a great time. ... read more

Hello all. Hope everyone had a good weekend. I had an awesome weekend. Friday was a little low key we stayed home and had nachos and beer and watched the footy on tv. The reason for our quiet friday was because saturday was packed full of things to do. JP went to work till 11 and then we went to the Billabong Sanctuary just 17km outside Townsville. It was fantastic. We made it just in time for the Crocs feeding. It was incredible the size of these guys and the strength. There was only a little gap between the tourist fence and the fence keeping them in so we were up close and personal. I took a bunch of videos which i'll put up soon and some great photos. We also saw them feed the Dingos ... read more

This week has been hard on the little Canadian girl. The weather is getting warmer and with JP's sister home her and I have been doing the work out thing everyday. The two things seprately wouldn't be a problem but together they almost killed me. The first day we got out and about we went for a massive bike ride. It took us about two hours to do this trail and as the day went on and the sun got hotter I started to feel a little unwell. I had taken all the necessary steps to be sun safe (ie. sun screen, something on my head, and a water bottle) but it still proved to be too much and by the time we got home I was white as a ghost hanging over a toilet and ... read more
