The countdown has started Well this is the first entry to our travel blog. As you all know we are very excited about our trip, even if the volcano in Iceland threatens us with Buzzkill! For the past few days we have been waking up with excitement, with lists of things to do running around our heads and wondering where we will end up but we have decided to take a "Cest La Vie " approach, as there isn’t anything we can change anyway. At this point we a fairly certain we are able to travel to Japan, where we spend 10 nights. Hopefully the ash would have died down and flights resumed long enough for the backlog of passengers to clear before the 4th of May flight to Heathrow. We listen to the news with ... read more

Hey guys, how ya goin? We're in Surfers Paradise at the moment and here's what we've been up to! After our last blog we still had some time in Byron Bay! We did another "workshop" with the crazy bushman Cockatoo Paul, and he showed us all sorts of important Australian survival techniques and crafts! We learned how to make dunny paper (ie toilet paper) out of a certain type of tree bark (hence the name of our blog) and we made bracelets and anklets out of palm fronds. They turned out quite well! We DID end up going to the questionable Cheeky Monkey's mentioned in our last entry... it was all that we expected and more! It was like the stereotypical spring break in Cancun complete with funny contests with contests stripping down for a $50 ... read more

Two days ago we made the stupid decision to leave Byron Bay and go to Surfers Paradise. The bus ride was an hour which wasn't too bad except that of course the second we step off the bus it starts to rain, and it has not stopped since. On top of the rain all the beaches were closed due to a tsunami warning that was issued because of the Chile earthquake. So here we are in "paradise" and it is raining and a potential disaster zone. The city itself is a lot like Miami, minus all the old people. There are sky-rises everywhere, everything is very dirty and very expensive. However we did manage to get a $12.00 steak (it wasn't nearly as good as the $10 one from Sydney but what can you do). We ... read more

You’ll be pleased to read that this is just a short blog as we spent less than 24 hours in Surfers Paradise so have very little to say about the place. We weren’t planning on stopping at Surfers Paradise but after a lovely email from a long lost school friend requesting that we meet up if we made it to Surfers Paradise on our Australian tour, we decided to put it into our itinerary and we are very pleased that we did. The bus journey from Byron Bay to Surfers Paradise only took a couple of hours but strangely we changed time zones so that we were then only ten hours ahead of England rather than eleven. This is because New South Wales has a different time zone to Queensland. Unfortunately when we were about to ... read more
