Frasers to Surfers

Day 108: Monday, March 15th, 2010.
Fraser Island to Surfers Paradise, Australia.

Per the Contiki Brochure, "There’s more time to explore Noosa this morning, so take a stroll through the shops or sunbathe and swim at the beach before we make our way south. We also stop off in Brisbane today. You’ll get a feel for the capital of Queensland’s laid-back atmosphere when we have a look around town. There’s an opal presentation here where you’ll learn all about Australia’s national gemstone. Have a go at rock-cracking
and maybe even pick up a piece of opal to take back home. Tonight, we pull into legendary Surfers Paradise, the Gold Coast’s party hot spot and home to some of the best surfing beaches in the world. Grab some of your new friends and join the party atmosphere of Surfers Paradise tonight. With loads of restaurants and buzzing nightlife, there’s something for everybody. Head to the happening Orchid or Cavill Avenues, where clubs and bars line the street or shoot some pool at the pub."

We have breakfast at the Dingo Bar and I see my first Kookaburra. Friggin' cute birds! For some reason, they remind me of penguins (their faces). They almost look furry. We drive to Surfer's Paradise and have a 2 hour layover in Brisbane. I walk around for a bit and then get my Internet fix. We get to Surfers Paradise and I'm immediately struck by how much it looks like Miami, Florida. Weird. Our hotel room at the Australis Sovereign Hotel (I'm sharing with Emily, Harley and a very nice girl from England whose name I'm blanking on right now...sorry!) is nice and we have a little kitchen as well as a huge balcony. I go out to dinner with Harley, Aoifa and Charlie (English) and we eat at Nando's. Then, they all head off to the bar/club and I head back to the hotel.
