After 6 months of work, we take off to Cairns - the beginning of the end of our yearlong traveling adventure! Cairns is famous for its Great Barrier Reef tours where many tourists get to see sharks, plenty of colourful fish and corals; and for its rainforest tours due to its location in the wet tropics. I laughed at how there are signs and a waiting area for Uber at the Cairns airport (and someone pointed it to us) - we had to hide the fact that we were taking Uber in so many Asian countries! At 4pm, the streets of Cairns were deserted - it was a bit of a weird feel. We were very hungry so after checking in at Bounce, our hostel (which was nice and pretty cheap), we went for a nice ... read more

Beim Einlass in das Gate ... read more

TOP 10 OF EVERYTHING Well, okay, maybe not quite everything. Though I’ve been doing my damnedest to cram in as much as I can for the last couple of decades, not even I can claim to have been anything like everywhere. Even so, to mark 10 years since my first post on TravelBlog, I thought it might be fun to make a list of my personal favourites, if only to start some heated discussions. So, without further ado, let’s kick of with the big one... BEST PLANET 1) Earth : I may be a little biased, but it’s still by far the best planet I’ve ever set foot on. And quite frankly in my opinion anyone thinking of moving elsewhere needs their head examined. 2) There is No 2. If anyone out there does have any ... read more

Sea Day and disembarkation- Our last 2 days End of holidays and our body clocks are well and truly in holiday mode, 8-30am wake up this morning, leisurely 2km around deck 6 (5 laps) and a 9-45 breakfast. A day spent being entertained by the crew at various things such as trivia, shuttle board, tell and say, murder mystery, drinking coffee and final dining at Dragon Lady and last chance Karaoke. The seas got smoother the closer we got to Cairns and the final night in bed was without the usual rocking effect that we had grown used to.We woke to the sound of no motors and the thrusters working which meant we were in Cairns turning around and entering our berth. We chose the Waterfront to dine this morning, less crowded, and had a lovely meal ... read more

Captains Log Tuesday day 1 of P&O cruise sailing 4pm from Cairns to PNG.We had organised to board at 2pm but arrived at 1pm, hot and sweaty from the 1 km walk along Lake St from our motel. We were swiftly ushered from bag drop, to inside, to this spot and that by a very efficient local team of people dressed in blue and white check shirts. Within 30 minutes we were on board and in our cabin. Score 1. Score 2 our cabin which is on deck 4, room 4011 which is the wheel chair room. So huge, massive open space with 4 portholes, couch, desk. Only down side is we can feel all the ups and downs and bangs being right up the front. Next stop The Pantry which is the buffet dining option ... read more

I checked out of the hostel in the morning and left my main pack in their luggage room so I could go out for the day before my evening flight. I decided to walk into the city along the full length of the esplanade and bird along the way. At the very top of the esplanade there was a pair of Beach Stone Curlews resting under some mangroves until some idiot children scared them off. Being a Sunday there were lots of those about. Once I reached the bottom of the Esplanade I decided to visit a zoo type thing I hadn't been for o yet: the Cairns Zoom and Wildlfie Dome. This is a small zoo theme park combination place located in a small glass dome on the roof of the Cairns Casino in the ... read more

Australia really is rather expensive isn't it? $100 for a return 50 minute boat ride. I'm still comparing everything to Malaysia which I really have to stop doing. Anyway, today we're going to Green Island which is the most popular island on the Great Barrier Reef and one of few sand cays with rainforest on it. Last time I was in Cairns I went to Michaelmas Cay which is a Cay which is known for nesting seabirds, but it's very far away and very expensive to get to, but Green Island has some different birds anyway and should be well worth birding for a half day as we did. Green Island does also allow sightings of most of the terns and things that nest on the sand cays of the reef like Michaelmas Cay, though just ... read more

We had to be in Cairns by the 27th May as I had a flight booked but we wanted to be there a few days earlier so we could do the things we wanted to in that area. Luckily we arrived on the 22nd so we were fine. We arrived late afternoon and the first thing we did was find a trip to the Great Barrier Reef. We found a perfect one; we didn’t want to dive, we were happy to snorkel. We found a boat that went to the Outer Reef and included lunch and other things. We booked it for the Friday. The day before the reef we spent walking around Cairns and exploring the town. It isn’t the prettiest of places but it has the reef so everyone goes there. The day of ... read more
