And so to the last day of our short break! With a little bit of time to fill in this morning before our flight back to Melbourne this afternoon, we headed off to the Cairns Zoo. We watched the pelicans being fed before heading to the Free-flight Bird Show. As we waited for the show to start there was a short shower of rain. After five days of glorious weather it looked like taking a bit of a turn for the worse. Fortunately, just before show time, the rain stopped. The show included Australia’s largest raptor, the Wedge-tailed Eagle and the White-bellied Sea Eagle that is common in Northern Australia. We also saw a Barn Owl, some cockatoos and a very clever magpie. With our cameras on motor-drive Bernie even managed to take a reasonable shot ... read more

This is a very toddler centric blog. I am nearly embarassed writing it and the fact that we didnt do anything that the exciting tourist destination of Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef should bring with it but we have been here heaps over the years and 'done' all that you can 'do' tourist wise so this was a family catch up and a relax and keep the kids happy trip. Which turns out, is extremely easy in toddler friendly Cairns :) My dad's health is not so good and when they said he was about to go on dialysis we decided it was time to venture to Cairns and visit. Turns out he is still doing pretty well and although they couldnt really drive after daylight hours they managed to handle the activeness of toddlers ... read more

As we left Thailand, bound for Australia, I could barely contain my excitement! I was at last on my way to Australia! My brother Rodd has lived in Australia for 25 years and all this time I dreamt of visiting him here. This is a dream come true for me! The most beautiful site of this trip so far, was Rodd and my nieces, Clare and Jody, waiting for our arrival at the Melbourne airport. BEAUTIFUL!!!! My brother Rodd is an excellent organizer, spreadsheets and all. After a day to relax, do laundry, recover from jet lag and a bit of the sniffles, we boarded another plane with the whole gang bound for Cairns, Queensland in northeastern Australia. We were heading back to the heat and humidity, this time with all the comforts of home. Rodd ... read more

We'd arranged the previous night for Chris to pick Tux and I up at 9am to take us to the airport to pick up the hire car. Chris arrived early at about 8.35, which in the end was fortuitous. The booking sheet via Carhire3000 said the car was being hired from National and to pick up from International Airport not domestic. Having gone round the International Airport a number of times and not being able to see any sign of National or anyone to speak to (aparently very few international flights that day) we drove over to the domestic terminal where we bumped into a Eurocars man. He said National brand had died many years ago but was now part of Eurocars. He directed us into the terminal where we finally found someone who knew about ... read more

The first day in our itineray when we had nothing planned. As you can imagine we therefore spent ages deciding what we were going to do! Stephanie and Tux went for an early morning walk/run while I went for a walk to explore the other end of the beach and whether you could get round the headland to the next beach - you couldn't, but I got some lovely photos of the whole of Trinity Beach. Spent time by the pool and sitting on the beach, but the latter was very windy. Also both the sea and pool were very cold. At 6.15 our bus from Yorkeys Knob Yacht Club turned up to take us to our next OF Supper. As at the airport we were enthusiastically met by Chris and Rebecca. Already there was an ... read more

I got a call from Stephanie and Tux about 7.30 asking me if I wanted to go to Victoria Market. I quickly got dressed and we took a taxi up to Melbourne's largest market. Wonderful selection of fish, meat and veg as well as usual tat items. Couldn't get taxi back so had to walk but just got back in time to have breakfast with others. Then spent the morning all exploring the city before Eryl had her highlight (her description!) of the whole 5 weeks - the tour to the set of Neighbour, with Stephanie, Samantha & Michael. Tux and I took the free tram to explore other parts of the city. Highlight was a tour of the MCG. That evening we met up with OFs at PJ O'Briens. A couple had dropped out at ... read more

Tux and I were up early to go and pick up the hire car but had to wait for the office to open at 8am. Without breakfast we set off the Great Ocean Road and stopped off at a number of places on the way. Eventually arrived around 1.30pm at the 12 Apostoles and although there are now only 7 (!!) it really is a wonderful site. There were also a number of other stacks that we visited shortly afterwards, one of which was called London Bridge, although half of that had fallen down in last few years. We were due to arrive at Tux's cousin's restaurant in Geelong between 6-630 so we set off for the long drive back. Arrived on time . The restaurant is actually owned and run by the son in law. ... read more

Arrived in Melbourne 4 hours late, but car was there to pick us up. Took about 30 minutes to our hotel which was very well located next to tallest building. Travelodge room was a bit of a come down from suite at YMCA in Hong Kong. All had a shower and then I wandered out to explore local parts of Melbourne, while Samantha and Eryl had a sleep. Stephanie and Tux meanwhile met up with Tux's cousin, initially in Melbourne and then they took them out to their house near Geelong. Michael also slept all afternoon. That evening Eryl, Samantha, Michael and I went out to an Italian for a meal and then an early night. Stephanie and Tux got in about 9.30... read more

Cyclone heading our way Mum is a bit worried today as in the newspapers there is a cyclone warning that one of the biggest cyclones ever is heading right towards us. It should be here in 3 days. She has said that we are not to worry as the cyclone will most likely change its path and not hit us at all in Cairns. We were just to monitor the weather reports. Australia gets lots of cyclones and difficult weather conditions. Recently there was an area the size of France and Germany flooded on the east coast where lots of people died and thousands of people lost their homes because of the floods. Some of the flood waters reached 6 meters high. That is about the height of 3 Mr Cains Hurricane Larry happened in the ... read more
