Plastered myself in make-up for a change, i feel like i haven't worn any for months, but now i'm on the "trendy" (NOT) east coast and in a city so i should try to phase out my Outback look... I'm already over the novelty of short hair, even though apparently bobs are THE haircut of the season, even Paris Hilton has one I'm told, and obviously my fashion sense is largely dictated by her. We looked around town and had a mooch around Tiffany - as you do as a backpacker. Got the bus to the Lone Pine Sanctuary, where we had a great time in the Sanctuary patting really tame kangaroos and got to hold a koala!! Got a cheesy photo of me holding him, so now my Australia trip is complete and I can ... read more

Watched the boguns go by as we ate breakfast in a café (me with my usual sugar intake of pancakes!) ... Surfers Paradise is a strange and soulless place, it's a bizarre mix of tat and luxury shops ie. Gucci, Fendi, Coach etc. For whom? The people here look as if they'd think the Hard Rock Café was incredibly posh. We took the bus later on to Brisbane and checked into the Palace Embassy Central hostel as Lucy stipulated that she most definitely did not want a "party hostel"! And I'm meant to be the grandma! The first dorm we walked into was like a prison cell, complete with breeze-block walls. I went down to say we needed more blankets and the guy on reception was having a total stress and said he'd swop our rooms ... read more

First leg of our move to London Shane & Kylie A wise man (that would be Mark Twain) once said “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbour. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” The “itch” to explore the world began back in 2004 when Kylie and I first travelled to Europe to see my brother, Colin. Colin moved to London in 2002 and after listening to his exploits for 2 years we decided it was time to see what all the fuss was about. And we weren’t disappointed! After spending just three weeks travelling through the UK and Western Europe, we were hooked. But there were ... read more

We couldn't really say we had visited Australia without indulging in the ancient Anglo-Australian art of imposing on distant relatives. Gill and Bob fullfilled their role admirably. After much thought and discussion we decided that Gill was Kim's second cousin. But only after a bottle of wine or two. The meeting had been suggested by Charles, Kim's Grandfather, who at the age of 95 has recently picked up email and the internet and is following our progress via this blog. Thanks to the introduction of Richard Branson into the Australian market internal flights are now very affordable - last time I bussed the whole way round. I shudder when I think how many thousands of miles that was. We had looked at bus or train from Cairns to Brisbane but a check on the map told ... read more

After Wednesday's film festival marathon in Brisbane we took a train out to the town of Manly (not to be confused with the beach town of the same name outside Sydney) in Moreton Bay. We had planned to visit St. Helena Island which was the site of an early convict settlement but found that as it's winter, no trip was running on the days we were there. Instead, we considered taking a ferry to Moreton Island but we ruled this out as we were planning to visit Fraser Island further up the coast - both are examples of sand islands but Fraser is largest of this type in the world. By default, we ventured out to North Stradbroke Island via a train ride to Cleveland, the "Gold Cat" ferry and two bus trips. There's an amazing ... read more

We arrived in Brisbane on friday afternoon in time to book ourselves on the last tour of the Castlemaine Perkins brewery - home of the famous XXXX beers AND to get tickets for saturday night's "footy"* clash between the Brisbane Broncos and the Canberra Raiders. Our hostel ("Aussie Way" - highly recommended) was within walking distance of both the stadium and brewery - lucky or what! The brewery tour was very well put together and informative (apparently the name of the beer is and old way of denoting quality and NOT because Queenslanders cannot spell BEER) and involved several very fine samples from their range of beers, ales and stouts. The rugby was also a great night out with the home team winning 24-18 with a try scored right in front of our stand. We even ... read more

Since my last entry, I've been living on a boat and old school camping on an island. From Airlie Beach, we did a 2 day/ 2 night sailing trip around the Whitsunday Islands. It was amazing (I really liked being on the boat). It was more snorkeling (or swimming in my case), stopping at Whitehaven beach (gorgeous), and sailing around... We also saw sea turtles off the side of the boat. My pictures from the boat aren't straight because, well, I was on a boat :). We returned for a night in Airlie Beach (we had intended to get the overnight bus, but realized it would have been too much after two days on a boat.. we stayed and partied with our boatmates instead). We took the bus down to Hervey Bay the next day (14 ... read more

I have seen most of Australian cities (actually all except Melbourne and Canberra), and I tell you: if I had to choose a place to live in Australia, it would be Brisbane. The city, the river, the parks, the art center, the pubs, the residential areas (that I have seen) - Brisbane MON AMOUR... I flew into Brisbane late on Tuesday night, got a lift from Evelyne's friend right to my hostel and went to sleep. So I first saw Brisbane next morning, as if I "fell" right in the center, without seeing the suburbs and everything coming into a city. I was shocked. Since I left Sydney 2.5 months ago I haven't been to a REAL city. I liked Adelaide and Perth as well but they're not the same. The central business district of Brisbane ... read more
