Sunset on the BoatSunset on the BoatSunset on the Boat

Sunset our first night on the boat in the Whitsundays...
Since my last entry, I've been living on a boat and old school camping on an island. From Airlie Beach, we did a 2 day/ 2 night sailing trip around the Whitsunday Islands. It was amazing (I really liked being on the boat). It was more snorkeling (or swimming in my case), stopping at Whitehaven beach (gorgeous), and sailing around... We also saw sea turtles off the side of the boat. My pictures from the boat aren't straight because, well, I was on a boat 😊. We returned for a night in Airlie Beach (we had intended to get the overnight bus, but realized it would have been too much after two days on a boat.. we stayed and partied with our boatmates instead). We took the bus down to Hervey Bay the next day (14 hours...ouch...) and got in at 1am. Bright and early the same morning (6:30am), we met up with our group for the "self-drive" 3 day/2 night trip to Fraser Island (which is the biggest sand island in the world). "Self-drive" basically means they give you a 4 wheel drive vehicle and bad camping equipment and send you on your way. We had a group of nine.

We did old school camping (tents both nights, lack of bathroom the first night). Unfortunately, it rained quite a bit, which put a damper (ha!) on our trip. We spent a good bit of our time driving around the beach (the beach is the road) and on the inland tracks (dirt roads with lots of bumps)... Jo and Graeme did most of the driving (as there were only three drivers in our group), so we managed to not get stuck in the sand or turn over... I didn't take too many pictures because the sand/wind combination makes the island bad for camera health. After the trip, we all enjoyed sleeping in a real bed (or as real as a hostel bed can be) in Hervey Bay. Early the next morning (see a pattern?), we took a bus down to Brisbane... we wondered around in the afternoon and saw a movie at night (War of the Worlds....um, no comment on the movie...). Our last day together, Graeme, Jo and I went to the Australian Zoo (home of the Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin...scary man). I will put up pictures from that and from the Blue Mountains (where I am heading tomorrow), when

After the hike, we took out all remaining food (for our last meal) and made all sorts of odd sandwiches...this is the aftermath...it started to pour right after we got in the truck...
