I realized that I never wrote about homestay weekends, which were two weekends ago after classes ended and before field research started. So I thought I'd do that now! I stayed wiith a really great family. Single mom Jodie Eden and her 8yr old daughter Ruby. Jodie's boyfriend John was also around a lot. They were all really really great. Jodie and Ruby live in Atherton in a cute little house, one story, nice and open floor plan, great veranda. Ruby was awesome. She talked a LOT and was just really cute. We hung out basically the entire weekend. We played on her trampoline (i forgot how much i love those. hehe) and in her "cubby" as they call it (like a club house). It was nice to just relax wiith a family. Eat breakfest on ... read more

Sorry it has been a while! Been pretty busy lately. Last week we finished up classes and had our exams so as of friday, no more class! Which is really crazy. As of monay, our directed research projects started!! I got into Jess's DR, which is the one I wanted! i was really really excited. there are 10 of us in Jess's DR, working with bats. 9 people are in socio-econ and 6 are in the plant one. My closest friends are in socio-econ so i hardly ever see them, but i like all of the people in my group so it is all good. I am loving every minute of it. We are basically catching bats and then either processing them, or putting transmitters on them. We currently have two bats with transmitters on them ... read more

Helloooo!!! Seems so long since i've written one of these. Anyway lots to say... got to Cairns (actually pronounced 'cans; would you beileve) on sat after very long journey on a decidedly rubbish plane - compared to what we're used to! We ended up sleeping most of the day then heading into Cairns centre where they have an esplanade with a massive lagoon which is free to swim in and you can do BBQs there too. we spent first two days lounging around there then on the third day Ant did not one but TWO bungy jumps. its with a company called AJ Hackett who own most of the biggest bungies in the world. this one was 50m just outside of Cairns. i took pictures and craned my neck all day. He then decided to do ... read more

We flew from Sydney to Cairns and spent a day or so sorting out most of the rest of our trip. We also joined a program called WWOOF (willing workers on organic farms). Basically, you exchange a few hours work in return for accomodation and food, and hopefully the chance to see what it is really like to work and live in Australia, albeit in a rural setting. Our first host fell through as it wouldv'e cost us too much to get there but a lovely German couple living in Butchers Creek (not Wolfs Creek!) could collect us from Cairns. We were given a beautiful room in a converted shipping container with great views over the countryside. We had great weather and went on quite a few trips to the surrounding hotspots - waterfalls, rivers, coffee ... read more

Up early & yes its started to rain again WOOP! WOOP! Bus driver arrived and seems pretty out there, hes wearing big black rimmed glasses with no lenses in them!?#@#! Stopped at some and the heavens opened naturally (cant believe how wet you can get in 30 secs, i was wearing my mac-a-mac and had an umbrella too!) waded up to my knees to get across a path (photo evidence of this). Ithen ate a purple flower that tasted like mushrooms, saw a spider above our heads in a web and a snake being released by one of the park rangers. "NO DANGER, PARK RANGER!" "NO DRAMA, CANE FARMER!" We enjoyed Lamingtons and juice before getting back on Gus the Wonder Bus oh and Fin our driver showed us how to get the leaches off our ... read more

Heylo! So this past week not much occured. just lots of studying and taking of exams, which i survived. lol. this weekend was really really great though. On thursday night a bunch of us watched The Holiday and then later on watched Beauty and the Beast. It was a good night. =) Then friday night we had craft night.. and we each did our own aboriginal style dot painting which was fun. After that watched Rabbit Proof Fence which is a movie about a true story of one of the Stolen Generation. It was good. Sad. Crazy. Yesterday we did another tree planting with TREAT. It had been raining so much all week that most of the pre-dug holes were full of water which was really annoying. I hope the trees live that we planted. I ... read more

Right so last entry I totally planned to write about what we did on monday as well. But I had to run out because the group was leaving for our 4 day field trip. haha. So yeah, sorry for the abrupt ending. Anyway, on monday, the day was pretty typical. Classes, field work, etc. But, the night was absolutely incredible. After dinner some of us went with Jess (ecology prof) to set up a bat trap on site. The trap itself was really cool. So about an hour and a half later jess came to tell us that we'd already caught 6 bats so we could go help her take them out and put down the trap if we wanted to. Which i did. The bats were soo small (all microbats). Once we got back down ... read more

Hey everyone, well today was rather eventful...i went on this trip called "on the wallaby" it was a pretty much hippie inspired day in the rainforest (not quite as extreme as the nimbin trip though)....anyways it was a really great day! we went to see some spectacular trees and lakes...the trees are HUGE about 60-80 meters in height...about 13m in diameter..jusst absolutely astounding....we also visited some beautiful rain water lakes as well as some waterfalls to swim under.... did you know that if a waterfall goes straight down its a boy and if it has rocks and breaks and "dances" down its a girl?! true story...thats what the aborigines reckon...anwyays we got to go in this one boy waterfall and swim behind it and all it was awesome..it was actually used in amusic video circa 1996 ... read more

25th February 2008 I need to make an amendment to yesterday's diary. The big green and black butterfly is a Cairns Birdwing Butterfly not a Queensland as I said on the photo. There were several gliding over our balcony this morning. They don't flutter like the other butterflies but swoop and soar like a small bird, hence the name. Speaking of photos I am now having to make do with a long 300 mm and a very wide angle 10-20 mm as my wonderful Sigma do everything lens has given up. It will take the odd picture but then goes into error mode so I will be taking close up far away or far away very close up!!! Should be fun. Last night we ate at the only resturant open in Yungaburra, except for a rather ... read more

Hey all! Sorry it has been a while. We've been busy with classes and field work and stuff and I've been trying to do my paper. Which I finished sunday night and then checked over last night and handed it in. Which was a relief. So, let's see. During the week I think we were just mainly having Forest Management Class and field work. Our field excerise for that class involved picking samples from many different trees, shrubs, vines, and weeds. Then we took different measurements such as flammability, leaf area, specific leaf area, wet mass, dry weight and some other stuff. Thursday we went on a little trip with Jess, the Ecology prof. We went around to different fragments of Mabi 5b forest and talked about stuff that we had learned previously in lessons. This ... read more
