29-8-11 happy Birthday Warwick!!!!!! We spent the next two days just relaxing, kayaking & fishing with no luck, but had a good time. Weather is a warm 25 degrees. 31-8-11 Awoke to a drizzly day so we decided to go sightseeing. We went to Lake Eacham & Lake Barrine; these lakes were formed out of craters. At Lake Barrine we visited two twin giant Kauri trees, they were enormous. We had to try out the Scones & coffee at the tea house, they were good. We then went to Mt Hypipamee Crater & Dinner Falls, with a nice drive through the rainforest. The crater was amazing with 80 meter high walls & you looked down from a viewing platform to the bottom. Below the surface are a lot of unexplored caves. We then walked to the ... read more

25-8-11 headed off after saying goodbye to Tom & Di to go to Lake Tinaroo in the Atherton Tablelands. After Navman lead us astray twice & nearly got us lost, we arrived at the most beautiful lake, where we are going to stay for a week to have a bit of R & R. We have flushing Loo’s & we can run the generators & it is only $74.20 for a week. We set up & cooked tea & this very cheeky Kookaburra came down & pinched a sausage off Warwick’s plate. 26-8-11 happy birthday Cheryl, girlfriend, have a great day. We had a great morning in the kayaks, fishing & exploring, but the fish are on holidays. The boys went off & collected a whole lot of tree trunks & had trouble cutting them up, ... read more

A fabulous weekend in Yungaburra, complete with platypus Took my beloved away for a belated birthday celebration weekend. Although our destination is only an hour from home, we rise pre-dawn and drink tea, giggling quietly and excitedly. I finalise our packing while Eric enagages in the now familiar ritual of cooking pasta and heating the stunning spag bol sauce he has cooked for many hours the night before, and packing it into prewarmed thermoses for a roadside breakfast, with little containers of extra virgin olive oil, grated romano cheese, chilli flakes and Maldon salt. We began this ritual onroute to the Wallaby Creek Folk Festival at Cooktown last year, eating spaghetti not long after dawn at a lookout with a view across the splendid, strange, sparse forest that covers that part of the world, looking ... read more

July 26, 2011 Sitting in the hostel office last night talking to John and Kerry about I should do today, we decided what I needed was a day with Uncle Brian. I needed a break from the reef . Uncle Brian is a little strange but loads of fun. I can't wait to meet the family. Uncle Brian is a tour of the rainforest, the Atherton tablelands and swimming like no other tour around. They promise fun, food and waterfalls with little to no effort. SIGN ME UP! At 8:00 AM Cousin Brad picks me up in Gus the Bus and 20 other cousins for the day. It's a family bus so we are all family for the next 12 hours. Our family heads south out of Cairns and travel through the small village of Babinda ... read more

the wet tropics combined with the dry outback charm The drive from The Daintree National Park to the Atherton area was the longest we did in Queensland. No complaints however as it is a really scenic road with the landscape changing a lot when compared to the coastal tropics. Suddenly the earth starts to look red, trees are no longer tropical palms and you see loads and loads of cattle grazing and kangaroos crossing your path ;-) The Tablelands are covered with lush green patches and they are the site of the recent volcano activity in Australia. Some of the craters and lakes are 'only 10,000' years old so pretty recent ;-). We took the road 44 linking to 81 straight to Atherton town when we were making our base camp for the 2 nights. ... read more

We had planned to visit a Chinese temple in Atherton this morning but on our way we decided to take a road signposted the scenic tourist road. It was also signposted unsuitable for caravans. We were unsure if this meant us as well but Andy decided to go for the ‘try it and see’ method and we soon found ourselves on a single track road with nowhere to turn round. This was starting to remind me of the time we got stuck on a single track road in Molly the caravan back in the UK because Andy decided to ignore the road signs and the navigator (me). Thankfully this time it all worked out fine. The views were of rolling hills with sheep grazing in the distance. Had we driven into the Cotswolds we wondered?? We ... read more

Hi again, Seeing as I had about a week left in Cairns and not much to do, I booked onto a tour up to Yungaburra in the Atherton Tablelands. The Tablelands are basically a lot of green, gently sloping hills, all on top of the mountain range, about 1000ft above sea level. To start the tour, Paul picked us all up at about 7am, and took us on a quick tour of Cairns' industrial estate, where we saw some "native wildlife" - the workmen in trucks and working on the road. Paul explained how they can be identified by their hairy faces and florescent jackets (yellow=junior, orange=adult). Every time we passed one Paul would beep his horn and get everyone to wave. Following this we headed out onto the highway, past a "dingo" (pet dog) about ... read more

I had booked on to an 'Uncle Brians' tour and was collected by Cousin Paul to make our way to the Atherton Tablelands. As we set off, the Sun was shining and it looked to be a beautiful day. It was deceiving, about ten minutes into the journey, the rain showed its face again and was back with a vengeance. We headed out onto the Bruce Highway through Babinda, the wettest town in Australia and on to the Devil's Pools. Aboriginal legend has it that a beautiful girl, who was lusted after by all the men in the area but made to marry an elder took her life here after running away with her one true love and get caught and torn apart. She was so distressed that she threw herself into the pools but her ... read more

Before we went on our Great Barrier Reef Dive trip, we left the city Cairns behind us for a couple of days and took the new wheels/home for a spin in the country and headed to Atherton Tablelands. Also Known as the 'Cairns Highlands' it's in the tropics and part of the Great Dividing Range. We'd read and heard that the scenery was stunning and there was plenty to see and the Tablelands do have a lot to offer but it had been built up a bit much. It was misty, dull and rained pretty much the whole time and having spent the previous few weeks being incredibly spoiled with natural wonders at Lamington and Kakadu National Parks and at Uluru, Kings Canyon and Kata Tjuta, through the mist and rain it didn't really live up ... read more
