DAY 276 We woke up this morning in a place that can only be described as paradise, from my sleeping bag we can look over lake Tineroo and it is beautiful, the birds are chatting, the Kookaburra’s a laughing and all seems well with the world The day is started with a morning cup of tea with Darryl and Sarah in the day picnic area overlooking a different part of the lake; the mist was just rising off the water, Sarah and I discussed photography technical stuff and took photos, Andy managed to type some of the blog as it was starting to get a bit behind, it is such a hard job catching up, as the days just seem to blend in to one. We wandered back to our site and started to rustle up ... read more

Day 104 - Port Douglas to Atherton Tableland (Lake Tinaroo) First things first, we would like to wish Mr and Mrs Coulsell a very happy wedding anniversary and we hope you have a lovely day. There is a card on the way guys, we hope it gets to you soon!! We've even called todays blog after one of your favourite sayings, can you tell what it is yet?! So today is the day we leave Port Douglas and head off to the Atherton Tablelands. Fellow bloggers Kangaroojack whom we’ve never met but have been in touch with since January, have been in touch to say they are camped at School Point, one of the permit sites on the Danbulla Forest Road at Lake Tinaroo which is pretty much in the centre of the Atherton Tablelands. They’re ... read more

DAY 275 We were not really quite sure how today was going to pan out, we found out yesterday that this campsite is fully booked and we would have to move on, after having told Darryl and Sarah that we would be at this particular place, this could mean that we potentially miss each other. The morning was cool but the sun was coming up, Andy got up for the kettle and I followed shortly after, my tea was made, I jumped out of the tent, took a slurp of tea, grabbed the camera and wandered off to look at the beautiful Lake Tinaroo that we are camped next to and take a photo or two of course. I knocked up a breakfast of boiled eggs, we were not in any particular hurry to move ... read more

We headed out of Cooktown on the very flash Mulligan Highway, built in 2006, which follows the old Cooktown-Developmental Road and connects Cooktown with Mareeba. We stopped briefly at James Earl Lookout, just south of Lakeland, and then had sausages for lunch in Mareeba. We continued south on the Kennedy Highway, then near Tolga, took the turn-off to Kauri and Tinaroo. We stopped at the Tinaroo Dam spillway and then drove into Danbulla National Park and State Forest to camp at Downfall Creek camp ground. Our camp site had a great view of Lake Tinaroo and allowed fires, although you had to bring your own wood. As we had arrived on Friday afternoon, the camp ground was filling up with weekend campers, but it never got rowdy - perhaps the light rain that began falling kept ... read more

Still feeling damp from the rainforest, we drove southwest into the Atherton Tablelands to Lake Eacham National Park. The sun decided to come out slightly so we could see into the clear deep lake that was once the site of a massive volcanic eruption. All geographic formations in Australia are super old, so it isn't often very easy to see how some land formations are formed. This lake isn't one of them. It is almost perfectly circular... like a science project volcano filled with Diet Coke and Mentos. We decided to save the walk around Echam for later and search for a place to spend the night. It didn't take long to find the campsite/hobby farm about 500 meters away from the national park. The camp we decided to stay at really reminded us of our ... read more

08/05/09 Friday Day 266 A flying day and a busy day Early start this morning, very early. Up at 4am to go for a hot air balloon ride. Mareeba is the capital of hot air ballooning in Australia and since we’re here it’d be stupid not to. Went to our pick up point and was met there by the pilot, Dave in his 4x4 carrying a trailer with the balloon all folded up and the basket where we would all fit in. There was a bus load also coming from Cairns but they would meet us at the launch site. There was another older couple from Oz in the jeep with us also on the way to the launch site. Lovely people! Your man had been up before with the same pilot. Your one hadn’t along ... read more

Kangaroo, where are you?: the Atherton Tablelands Friday 23rd January 2009 We’ve been in Australia exactly one month today and we still haven’t seen a Kangaroo! We’ve made our eyes ache looking for them. However, when we zoom in on some of our photos on the computer, we can see some blurry images of small Tree Kangaroos peering at us through the bush on the Atherton Tablelands. Hopefully we’ll get to see some properly in the next few weeks before we leave Australia. We’ve seen some dead ones on the road. We spent a long time stalking quietly through the rainforest yesterday looking for Cassowaries to no avail but we’ll keep looking over the next day or two whilst here on the Cassowary Coast at Mission Beach. On Wednesday we left Port Douglas and headed inland ... read more

Avec toute ... read more

Early start again today. After getting all our group together we headed out to the tablelands area. First stop was babinda boulders where the the river is "upside down". The aboriginies believe that this was done to trap the spirit of a girl who killed herself in the water after her lover was murdered for being with her when they were both from different tribes. A lot of people have died attempting to swim in the water and it is believed she was taking them as all but one were young single males. The next place we went to was josephine falls. This was really cool as there was a natural water slide which was fun and it was a really nice place to swim. After a pub lunch and a quick stop at crawfords lookout ... read more
