On arriving back from the Whitsundays afer my 11 hr bus trip I headed up into the rainforest to do some wildlife spotting and filming with Dave. We visited the volcanic lake Eachem for a swim and tea and scones on Lake Barrine. We spotted lots of bandicoots, rat kangaroos, turtles and waterdragons. When it was dusk we set up camp on a cliff edge and had a view of the whole misty valley to wake upto in the morning. At night we wandered through the forest saw barnowls, possums, platypus in the streams, tree kangaroos and more. Dave hyponotised a boyds forest dragon by rubbing its belly and we picniced with the almighty chorus of the thousands of birds.. The place realy was ALIVE!... read more

Jenny: Well, where to start? We don't usually leave it this long, but the internet is more expensive here, and computers less common in hostels etc. Well we picked up the car in Cairns, headed up to Port Douglas for a night, we spent the afternoon in the pool and just had a quick peek round the town in the rain the next day. From there we drove up to the Daintree National Park. First stop (of course) was a tropical fruit winery, to provide lunch for the mozzies! Seriously, I've never seen so many mozzies (well except maybe in Peru in the jungle). We tried 13 different types of wine, actually some were very nice and they weren't all sweet either. We particularly liked the passionfruit wine, but they also had a good black sapote ... read more

Okay, So far Scott has held the reins of our travel blog. I'm thinking I might give it a crack. Especially since he keeps giving me the evil eye :) Hmm...Tablelands. The hobbit Haggus and his reluctant companion venture timidly into thier odd carriage... The journey started out with us renting a car from Cairns. We picked our huge white Ford four door car(it looked like a massive undercover cop car) and with white knuckles and sweaty palms gripped the steering wheel and steered into traffic. Scott was the lucky one to have a go at driving on the wrong side of the road on the wrong side of the car. On the passenger side of the car there was a huge sticker reminding drivers to stay on the left side of the road. I ... read more

On the morning of 28th we headed inland to the Atherton Tablelands between Cairns and Mission Beach. An area of origibally dense forest but now taken over mostly with dairy cattle farming. Along the route visited several waterfalls, including Millaa Millaa Falls, Mungalli Falls and Elinjaa Falls, where Mark and Roger went swimming, not that it made much difference because by the time we'd made the short walk there we were soaked through from the tropical downpour. After all that we had a lovely lunch stop at Mungalli Creek Dairy where we tasted (and bought) cheeses and various types of yogurt. That night we parked up in Malanda and had a tasty BBQ in the rain! The following morning (29th) we drove to a crater lake called Lake Eacham which had turquoise waters suitable for swimming ... read more

Day 257 (09.12.07) We set off from Cairns looking forward with a little trepidation to our huge road trip. Over the next two weeks we would have around 2500km to travel and wanted to try and see as much as we could in that time. Rather than taking the simple route down the coast to Mission beach where we planned to stop for the night we headed inland to explore a little more of the Atherton Tablelands that we'd floated over some days previously in the hot air balloon. Off the highway we managed to find ourselves an extremely steep and windy road that Nora coped admirably with and which afforded us with some absolutely beautiful views as we climbed high into the mountains. We passed thorugh the Crater Lakes National Park and made a brief ... read more

Tues 20th Nov: Early start to drop Sheila at garage for 0800. Walked back into city and back to the internet cafe to kill a few hours. Back to mall to pick up a few things then finally on the road, heading for the Atherton Tablelands and the hostel, On The Wallaby in Yungaburra. The drive was only 100km so we couldn't understand why we were told the drive would take approx. 2.5hrs. We got as far as Gordonvale and then we understood. We began climbing and winding around hairpin bends and this continued for about 90mins. I probably took an extra hr on top of that as the views were outstanding and I kept making Laz stop so I could take photos. After climbing 900m we eventually began to descend and the road straightened out, ... read more

Today we are off to the famous Atherton Tablelands - basically a huge rainforest with loads of waterfalls. We were picked up from our hostel at 8am in the morning (quite late for us now!) and driven to the tablelands. The tour guide on the bus was called Hutch and was very amusing entertaining us with stories and jokes along the way. Our first stop was at the Cathedral fig tree, also known as the Strangler tree. Basically they have a plant over here which they call the strangler as when a bird eats a seed and passes it through onto a tree, the seed can be dormant for about 50 years. However when it starts to grow, it attaches itself to the tree and grows on and around it until basically it has strangled the ... read more

After much debating, Atherton Tablelands won over Cape Tribulation for our day out! We have read a lot about both and well, the consensus of backpackers was Atherton wins so we trust our fellow backpackers in this one! (or maybe it's because we got to swim in the waterfall that the famous Timotei ahri advert was filmed at - and oh yes - we did the hair flick too! but more about that later!), sp we got picked up by 'Hutch' our crazy driver and guide and away we went! Atherton Tablelands are rainforests about an hour away from Cairns and are stunning! George discovered these forests, yes good old George erm I can't remember what I was told if it's Geprge Tableland or george Atherton - it's one of the 2! First stop was Catherdral ... read more

Day 251 (03.12.07) From the adventure of the skydive we were today going for the relaxation of a hot air balloon ride. This was a wedding prezzie from Mark's sister and brother-in-law Catherine and Pete so thanks a million - it was an incredible day! The only bad thing about it was that it started at about 3:45am! With it still dark outside we stumbled bleary eyed out of the hostel where we were picked up in a minibus which was to be taking us to Mareeba in the Atherton Tablelands and our launch site for the ballooning. As it was getting light we made a stop for the pilots to make the final decision on the launch site and let us know where we needed to get to. The pilots obviously having figured out what ... read more
