After much debating, Atherton Tablelands won over Cape Tribulation for our day out! We have read a lot about both and well, the consensus of backpackers was Atherton wins so we trust our fellow backpackers in this one! (or maybe it's because we got to swim in the waterfall that the famous Timotei ahri advert was filmed at - and oh yes - we did the hair flick too! but more about that later!), sp we got picked up by 'Hutch' our crazy driver and guide and away we went!
Atherton Tablelands are rainforests about an hour away from Cairns and are stunning! George discovered these forests, yes good old George erm I can't remember what I was told if it's Geprge Tableland or george Atherton - it's one of the 2! First stop was Catherdral fig tree which was flipping impressive! This tree drinks 6000 litres of water a day! thirsty little thing! The strangler fig has grown all over the normal tree to make it massive!
After we went to karrine rain forest and lake which was really good, we took a walk around it looking for wildlife, we saw a forrest dragon - doesn;t breathe fire
though which is a shame! ha ha! Or maybe not considering the bush fires over here! we saw a tree kangeroo as well but it was too wuick I couldn't get a photo! we got to swing like tarzan on one of the vines....aaarrrrraaaarrrr (tarzan noise)
then we went to one fo the lakes in the national park to have some lunch and swim in the lake - all very safe - nothing to eat us in there! have purchased some trusty goggles so went for a swim! The water was surprisingly warm - I am used to it being very cold now! Anyway it was lovely! We went to a different part of the lake and there were loads of turtles there as well - how good is that??
Afterwarsd we went to Millaa Milla Falls - where the fimled the Timotei and and it was gorgeous! The water was freezing, it took your breath away a bit when you jumped in! We climbed on the rocks behind the fall and got a bit of a back massage from the fall but it was really strong! Lou swaers something bit her in there though! he he! She
kindly accused me of it at first even though I was 2m away - go go gadget arms!! She lived to tell the tale anyway! There was a little stream opposite the fall though and again there were lots of baby turtles, they are so ace! We each took our turn to do the Timotei flick which was quite funny!
After that we went to see the crater and dinner falls. the crater was caused by volcanic erruption and caused a big big hole in the ground! There's a lot of water in there now though but it's a big drop! Then we went for a swim at Dinner falls! That was amazing as well! the falls were so strong you got beaten up by them, there was a big current goign through so hutch was pullling us all through the waterfall as it was hard to swim it! We could have our photos taken then! You can just see me on the photo but it was hard to get yourself out in front of the waterfall as it was so powerful! Nearly lost my bikini! ha ha! One again, it was freezing, Lou didn't get bitten that time
turtle taking a breath - Bottoms up!
Forgot to say but they breathe out their bottom - how funny! It takes it's air in through it's mouth though! though by the ghost of waterfalls, but it was gorgeous swimming in the waterfalls! How often do you get to do that eh?!
We then popped off to the lodge where people stay overnight if you're doind an overnight stay - we weren't - but it was nice and we got to hold a snake! again - yawn yawn!
So all in all it was an excellent day! Lots of swimming in wateralls which we wanted and iot was brilliant. Even though it was a day tour Hutch really tried to bring verytone together, making up games on the bus and getting us to introduce ourselves and sing karoake on the Mic - well he tried anyway but no one would do it! ha ha! there's a lot of cool people on there so we all met for a drink that night which was nice! Danny's been travelling for 8 months and has got to Oz overland on a truck full of people! he sounds like an illegal immigrant but he is english! ha ha! how cool is that! jackie is from Melbourne so we have Oz contacts for the next visit - ha ha - no joke!
But shes cool, shes 29 and looks about 17! So we had a good night with them, nothing major as all of us but Danny were diving the day after!
