24th February 2008 Today we left the Rainforest Motel in Atherston after saying goodbye to the receptionist and her roo dog Wally. A roo dog is used when they hunt kangeroos as they can sniff out the carcasses in the long grass so that the hunters can find the ones they have shot. Wally was across between a greyhound and a mastiff. Very big! We drove up to Yungaburra and had breakfast then continued up the Giles Highway towards Lake Barrine. On the way we stopped to look at the Curtain Fig which could be a 1,000 years old which is mind boggling. The fig seed is dropped by birds in the top branches of a tree and grows aerial roots which go down to the ground. Gradually over many years the fig strangles the original ... read more

23rd February 2008 We are still at Rain Forest Motel in Atherton Tablelands. The motel reception was broken into last night and when we got up this morning there were police checking out the crime scene. We went to check if our hire car had been broken into when we noticed a large stick insect on the rear wheel arch which was a work of art, he was just like a dead leaf and huge! He was at least 9 inches long. Atherton Tablelands is a bit like Derbyshire and is quite different from the rain forest jungle area we were recently in. The countryside is rolling plains of cattle country with occasional bits of rainforest in the creek areas and ranges of mountains in the distance. Today we went waterfall spotting. There are several routes ... read more

22st February 2008 When we got up this morning it had stopped raining, although it had rained most of the night, but this is what you would expect in a rainforest in the wet season. Everything was dripping and sparkling in the morning sun. We went for breakfast and looked down into Coopers Creek to watch the turtles and Black Spotted Jungle Perch swimming in the creek below us. Whilst we were having our breakfast Dinah kept rushing off to photograph the Musky Rat Kangeroos (the smallest of the kangaroo family) who were playing in the jungle just beside the restaurant. After breakfast Dinah disappeared whilst I had a second cup of coffee, I then spotted her wading up Coopers creek in an attempt to get a close up picture of the turtles we had seen ... read more

Hello all! I just wanted to write about this past sunday, because it was incredible. Sundays are our free days and this sunday we went to see a bunch of waterfalls. On the way to the first one, we stopped at the Atherton Tablelands lookout. It was incredibly gorgeous (i took lots of pics. Will try to put some up later). Once we got to the place with the waterfall, we had to walk about a little over 2km to get to it (including crossing a "creek" which was much more like a stream or small river due to rain. fun times). But it was all worth it. The waterfall (nandryoa falls) was spectacular. It is one of the tallest in queensland i think. And we could swim in it. Which was beyond cool. Swimming around ... read more

So, since I last wrote a lot has happened. The pics of everyone in the program are now up on the sfs web site in case anyone hasn't noticed that and would care to see them. =) Last saturday we took our swim test at Lake Eachem. It started raining basically as soon as we got there but we still swam and it was kinda fun. The water was warm and it looked really gorgeous seeing the rainforest bordering the lake through all of the rain. At night I stayed at the center with a few people and we hung out and made rice crispy treats.. but with coco crispies and rasberry and vanilla marshmellows. It was interesting to say the least. =) Sundays are our free days so me and 5 others got up and ... read more

Sunday 10th Ellie (Ozbusser), Kev and I went to see 'Fool's Gold' set in the Carribean but filmed in location in Australia - Whitehaven Beach is very recognisable and worth going to see the film for, if not much else was. (Why cast Donald Sutherland as a posh Englishman and Ray Winstone as a windblown Floridean?) The rain bucketed down today - a real tropical storm. Monday 11th Kev and I were booked to go on a reef trip but rough weather was expected and we could defer our trip if we wanted. As we have now arranged to drop the campervan back to Cairns rather than Sydney we have time to spare and deferred the boat trip, spending the time sorting stuff, (flights to Sydney, sending post home), shopping (tee shirts and a reversible silk ... read more

So on Thursday we had an introduction to all of our classes which was pretty cool, although I am finding it difficult to get back into the mode of doing school work. It is especially difficult to imagine doing homework and taking tests while being out in the rainforest. It just seems kinda wrong. I'm not the only one who feels this way, don't worry. =) But all of the classes seem really great and all of the profs are amazing. I am sooo incredibly excited for the ecology class, although it is definitely going to be the most work. Ah well. AC, next week we start taking AM bird walks and of course I thought of you. =) I have already seen some cool stuff. I keep seeing Sulphur Crested Cockatoos everywhere. They seem to ... read more

Hi Everyone! Sorry it took me a little while to write an entry. The internet is very slow as I have told most of you, plus we are just really busy. However, I keep waking up way early so I've decided and I can try and write stuff then, for as long as this early rising lasts. Australia is amazing. The rainforest is so incredibly gorgeous! The minute the plane landed in Cairns I was in love. I think it was also nice to see green again, after leaving our dreary winter with the leafless trees and everything. It has been in the 80s I guess for the past few days. Really hot in the sun but usually OKish in the shade. I have been surprised that it was fairly sunny the first few days. Yesteday ... read more

Feeling rather dispondent after the constant sweltering heat and not being able to have a paddle in the sea, we decided to head for the hills.............. People had told us the Tablelands were cooler - But they were wrong!!!! However, we found we could at least have a dip in the icy streams and waterfalls to cool us down..... On the edge of the Wooroonooran National Park we saw a few tree kangaroos (arrrrr), but they were so skittish we didn't manage to take a picture of them. Ended up doing the worst journey ever around Lake Tinaroo, 20klms of unsealed roads (more like a battle ground) Potter did us proud yet again, but we were shaken to death and glad when it was finally completed. Spent a few days there, searching out waterfalls and ... read more
