Uluru Sunrise Not the most spectacular But took lots of pics! Our first activity of the day after breakfast today is to go see the sunrise by Uluru. Sunrise is at 7:23AM but we get there with plenty of time to spare. It is a crazy madhouse up at the sunrise viewing area...so many bus loads of tourists...who told them about this? haha Uluru, it is 9.4km around. 3.4 km climb up. 2.4km width. 7 km deep. How heavy is Uluru? One stone. HAHA I thought that was a good joke. We were given three options for this morning. 1) “The climb” if it is open. 2) 3/4 base walk around Uluru and see the sunrise from the base. or 3) Watch sunrise at the sunrise viewing area and then do the 1/2 base hike. Steep Kings Canyon Trek Red Centre of Oz is...Wow! I see Uluru. This morning was the first of many crazy early starts today. We were to be ready and waiting for our bus at 5AM outside of our hostel. Twelve of us were ready to go on time. We were just waiting for passenger #13. Our driver Amanda was kind enough to go up to his room and give him a wake up call...he didn't hear his alarm. So this is at about 5:15. I'm guessing at least another 30 minutes go by and he is still not down at the bus. Before we know it, it is 6AM and Amanda finally locates the newly dubbed "Mr. Sleep-in". I don't know, but if I knew I overslept and a bus was waiting for me I'd hurry ... read more

What a nice sleep in! Lazy day in Alice Springs. Cook, eat, sight seeing. It was so nice to be able to sleep in and not have to be ready by 6AM this morning! Especially knowing the next three days I'll have to be ready by 5AM. UGH! But it'll be worth it since Kings Canyon and Uluru will be in the cards. That’ll be two nights of camping out under the stars. We’ll be sleeping in something called a swag. I haven't seen one myself yet but have been told that it is sort of like a self contained sleeping "unit" with inflatable mattress and you insert a sleeping bag and the cover can close up over you. So it'll be nice to be able to sleep under the stars at night. Our guide yesterday ... read more

Deserted Outback. Another cattle station. Big open dirt roads. 05:20 Wake up. 06:00 Set off and on the road of darkness. Geesh! Boulia looks exactly the same as when we arrived in the darkness of night last night. 06:35 Still dark out there. Just before 7AM Sunrise! It’s simply amazing watching the sky turn partially red and orange. 07:58 We cross the Georgina River on the Donahue Highway. When there's flooding in the area the highway is flooded as well and access to the Donahue Highway is shut off. 08:12 We stopped for "nothing." Again it was amazing to look all around and there was literally nothing to be seen. 09:33/09:03 Crossing over the Queensland/Northern Territory border. The Northern Territory time zone is 30 minutes behind. Time to adjust the old watch. I take the opportunity ... read more

so the famous red centre: we went to alice springs from where we went to the red centre where we saw uluru (which is ayers rock), the olgas and kings canyon. we saw each one over the 3 days and they were amazing sights to see.... the rock was just like u see in pictures.... we walked around the base which took about 1 1/2 hrs and there are so many flies... just tooooooooooo many, but we were lucky as it is coming up to winter now so there were many less than there there usually are, which means it must be awful in the summer! we saw the sunrise and set there.. the setting was nicer i think and also cos we didn't have to wake up at 5am to see it! but unfortunately my ... read more

I planned one day of relaxing in the pool in Alice after the long desert trip, but as you know me already, it didn’t happen. I discovered that there were a few interesting places in Alice. Mainly, I visited two places that provide services we are very accustomed to, but in a unique way as they serve a community distributed over a vast area. The first place is called “School of the air”. The school teaches 114 kids that live in an area of 1.3M sq km, where there are less than 10 kids in the same area. Most of them live in remote cattle stations and the only other kids in the area are there siblings. The closest neighbours may be 500 km away. The teachers sit in the “class room” in Alice and transmit ... read more

In the last day of the tour we visited one of the nicest spots - Kings Canyon. It's about 3 hour hike around the canyon. The pictures will tell the story better than words. It's simply a beautiful place in the middle of a desert. After a long 500km drive we reached Alice Springs, and celebrated the end of the tour at Toddy's all you can eat buffet. Later everybody went for drinks but I felt I drunk way too much the last 8 days, and got an early sleep for a change. The bottom line, this camping tour was really good. First, I think I made a really good choice to go with Wayward "Let the others rush". We had more time to see things, to feel, to explore. The guide was fantastic. Second, camping ... read more

I first saw Uluru in sunset, Sunday evening. The first time I have heard of this place was about 8 years ago, in one of the travel magazines I used to read. I remember thinking that I will never get there: Australia is so far and even if I do get there, the rock is so far from anywhere else. But that Sunday I was standing there in front of this piece of rock and I was simply amazed. It's one rock! It's so big! Of course I wasn't alone there. Thousands of tourists shared the experience with me. But who cares, with beer in one hand and a camera in the other I stood there and appreciated the sight. The next morning we woke up early (surprising?) to watch the sunrise over Uluru and its ... read more

Uluru Blog: We made it to the "Heart of Australia"! It was and odd feeling leaving WA, sad on one hand after having such a fantastic time and having to say good bye to Auntie Pam, but excited on the other as we knew what was ahead was going to be all totally new to us both. The flight from Perth to Ayers was great. So wide and vast! The resort itself was a surprise. Not what we expected out in the middle of no where. 5 very nice hotels with swimming pools, shops, restaurants etc.. We were so glad we waited till we got here to book all the tours. If your planning on coming here don't book until you arrive it will save you money and will give you loads more options to choose ... read more
