we got woken up just before sunrise - it was still totally dark, the stars were still out and all my clothes that i'd put on the end of my swag to dry overnight were totally soaking, dammit! upside - the campfire was still going so i managed to dry them out :) after cooking toast on the campfire (sooo much quicker than a toaster!!) we headed back up to the viewing point near camp to watch sunrise. and i thought that sunset was good!!!! before the sun came up, uluru was dark, almost grey and surround by mist. then, as the sun gradually hit the rock it changed and became more and more red, surrounded by the most picturesque pinky purple sky. kodak moment for sure :) it was a lot lot warmer and sunnier ... read more

well hello there everybody! so i made it to alice springs! it's absolutely totally completely and utterly in the middle of no-where. maybe i should start believing my lonely planet guide book... ah, and its nice and hot - oh the novelty of wearing cropped trousers, strappy tops and birkenstocks! yay! (this is more like it...) had to get up at like 6.00am on wednesday morning to finish off packing and get to the airport in time, nick gave me a lift which saved on the headache of me trying to catch a bus. (me and public transport in australia, not a good combination. i believe that we have established this now.) the flight was absolutely fine and even though it was 2 and a half hours, after the evil evil 22 hour flight to get ... read more

Hello to all my travel fans (a but hungover today will explain more later!) Just finished the best 7 days of my life, seen many things that I will probably never see again and met cool people. This is a very very very long Blog. Photos at LinktoPhotos We'll start with Day Uno (1) - Tues: Was picked up by the tour company at 6.45am from Adelaide. South Aus is the wine capital of the world and we drove through lots of winerys in Clare Valley. It reminded me of Surrey with the green fields and hills. Drove further into the Flinders Ranges and had lunch at a gorge, saw Yellow footed Rock Wallabies, called because they have yellow feel, live on the rocks and are wallabies! Got chatting to the other 8 people on the ... read more

After a temporary seperation, we met up again in Alice Springs, which was a bit bizarre. Loads of chat to catch up with!!! We were collected from our rather shabby hostel at 6 the next morning (we had got up too early because of the strange half hour time differance that exists in the middle of Australia) and we were loaded onto a mini bus with about 20 other people. Including a couple from Edinburgh, Amanda and James and a Candian girl called Brooke. There was a trainee guide going out at the same time as us, so we were actually a very happy band of around 30. Our first stop was to ride a camel, as you do.... Apparently, there is a large number of wild camels roaming around in the outback of Australia. We ... read more

When we went to Crocodylus park, there was like, 100 crocodiles, or even more probably. They also had red kangaroos, wallabies, Emus, lions, 2 tigers, Cassowaries, 2 ostriches and lots of little monkeys. By Molly Hello everyone, Today we went to the Crocodylus Park in Darwin. We got there in time for the big saltie’s feeding. We also got to see the crocodiles in the breeding pens get fed some chicken. I got to hold a baby croc and so did Molly. There we lots of other animals at the park apart from the crocodiles - lions, tigers, emus and ostriches just to name a few. I saw my first cassowary and they weren’t as big as I thought they’d be. We saw lots of black kites (birds of prey) above the park. It was a ... read more

Much colder morning this morning but didn't have to set out quite so early. Drove back to Uluru (it's much bigger close up - small, far away, small, far away) and parked at the beginning of the Mala walk. This is where people do the climb from - couldn't believe how many people were still doing it even though there was a big sign at the bottom from the aborigine people saying 'please don't climb' because it's sacred to them. I could see the temptation though - it's so steep it would be quite an achievement - even if it has got a handrail now! I wonder if the Mala (hare wallaby) men are allowed to use it at their creation ceremony... We were good little boys and girls and did the base walk - 10k ... read more

Set off at 7am again - pretty cold being the desert but we've had worse - and headed up the Stuart Highway towards Alice. The road directions here were 'go about 600k then take the first left' - hee hee! This took us towarsd Uluru (pronounced Ooolooroo) otherwise known as Ayre's Rock. The scenery here turned more like the red sand with gorgeous blue green and purple scrub that I've seen in pictuers. We got fooled (as I'm assured most people do) by Mount Ebenezer which is a table mountain on the way to Uluru. We stopped off at the Uluru Resort to look at the Visitor centre - about the aborigine people wholive here, the animals and the way that Uluru was formed - it's the end of a big plate of uniform sandstone which ... read more

G’day everyone, If we got paid for every time we said G’day or How ya goin mate? we could probably retire. Better than shove off you Victorian idiots - I guess. Anyway, at the moment we are camped up in Darwin with Tanya (Angie’s sister) in a house that she is renting and the kids are getting their fix of TV and DVD. Apparently ‘TV Deficiency Syndrome’ (TVDS-Aust. Med. Journal March 1989 Vol 3. Pg 45-89) is a medical condition proceeded by whining, whinging and a bad temper after being in the backseat of a car for 4 hours on the Stuart Highway. On the way we went to Palm Valley on a really rough 4WD track, stopped at Mataranka and Douglas Daly thermal springs and Wycliffe Wells, which is supposed to be the UFO capital ... read more

We're just back from a fantastic 3 days in the outback visiting Australia's most iconic attraction - Uluru, or Ayres Rock as it's commonly known, as well as the Olgas and King's Canyon, and experiencing a bit of outback life, and it was great! We started from Alice Springs very early on Monday morning, as Uluru is a 5 hour drive from Alice. Our first afternoon was spent doing the base walk around the rock; the local Aboriginal tribes discourage people from climbing it as it's a sacred site to them, but plenty of people still do the climb. We decided not to partly out of respect for the locals, and partly because it's bloody steep and we weren't sure that we were feeling that energetic! The base walk was enough exercise for the first day! ... read more
