We packed up early this morning and farewelled Rhonda and Colin as they started their trip home. We are heading to Tennant Creek today an easy 500km day. Our first sidetrack was at Aileron Roadhouse where we noticed the sculpture of an aboriginal man on the hill behind the roadhouse. When we pulled in there is a work in progress of an aboriginal woman and child spearing a goanna. Both sculptures are by Mark Egan with the man taking 18 months and the woman 6 months so far. We hope to call in again on our way home and get some better photos - the clouds were against us this morning. While at Aileron we called into Anmatjere Art and added to our souveniers with a large aboriginal dot painting. Luckily we arrived on a day ... read more

Up early in the New Year & Mark went to wake Travers who didn't show for breakfast as his alarm failed to go off! We failed to get to the thermal pools for a swim due to 2m of water on the road. We then headed to Larrimah to the Pink Panther Pub. The pub owner started rescuing animals and now has a little menagerie out back. Here we got to hold a Children's Python & a little Sugar Glider (who was just the cutest!) - although not too closely together! They had several lizards & snakes, many many birds including a Blue-Winged Kookaburra which we saw fed on the wing. There were two adorable wallabies hopping around the place that liked to be scratched on their bellies. Mark now thinks we need to get pet ... read more

R Writes: Wow, just to think when this trip was just a couple of friends dreaming, that was close to 18 months ago sitting at the end of the bar at the Sporties Club. We threw a few ideas around, from a 2 week jaunt to the West Coast to a 10 week Grand Tour of the WORLD!!! Ideas were bounced off each other and the look on all of our faces changed slightly when it dawned on us that we could do it. From that 18 months ago or 13140 Hours ago and now its less than 60 til we drive out of good ol' Tennant Creek. I have to admit, that the excitement is just starting to kick in, it's been a busy last couple of months with the new job and everything else ... read more

After Darwin we said goodbye to Dad and headed for KAKADU National Park. Completed an amazing walk up to a place called Urbiru with incredible views over the wetlands. A ranger talked about some of the rock art and the lesson and law behind some of the artwork which was very interesting. We slept amongst the howl of Dingo’s every night concreting the fact that we really were out in the sticks. The magic of Kakadu slowly crept up on us, it wasn’t immediate but looking back on the experience witnessed some of the most beautiful scenery on the trip. The mixture of palms, ferns, gum trees surrounded by wetlands, loads of different species of birds chattering early morning, the billabongs with crystal clear emerald water and the waterfalls all connected up to bring about the ... read more

We got up early and found the entire hotel was at breakfast at 6.30am - mayhem!!! We met a lovely elderly couple from NSW at breakfast and they told us that they would rather wear out than rust out! I really liked that. The day was cold but clear and we travelled north stopping at Ti Tree, Barrow Creek & Wycliffe Well Road Houses. We stopped at the Devils Marbles and enjoyed the amazing sights. When we got to Tennant Creek we did a quick tour around the town and went out to see the pebbles - a miniature version of the Devils Marbles. Tennant Creek was interesting it seemed as though it was just one street with lots of Aboriginal people along both sides of the street. There didn’t seem to be anywhere for dinner ... read more

During the trip there will be a challenge for each of us. The mission if we choose to accept it, is in the form of a Photo Scavenger Hunt. Between now and the date of departure we will be compiling a list of fun and sometimes I would expect, awkward challenges. Some of the photos will be of a certain subject, however some will be required to have at least one of the touring party in it. Below is the start of the list, before leaving, as a group we will finalise it and then the challenge will begin A lookalike for any of us traveling with a topless person (my guess is that Carmel will win this hands down many times over) On a horse Weirdest T Shirt a Walmart "person" In Walmart a landscape ... read more

12th October 09 - 13th October 09 I went south to head north, if that makes much sense to you? Tennant Creek is the nearest 'big' town to Three Ways and I needed to re-stock some food supplies so I headed south to Tennant Creek (only 24km away). There is a huge man made dam just out of the town, Mary Ann Dam, that I thought would be a nice place to have a swim. It's hotting up, a real dry heat. But I know it's just going to get hotter the further north I travel. Tennant Creek is a town you want to get in and out of quickly. Not my kind of place. After stocking up I headed out to the Dam and it was great. The parks around the Dam are green and ... read more

We have travelled 600 kilometres from Katherine to Tennant Creek, a long trip but with quite a few interesting things to see on the way. Yesterday, our first stop was at Mataranka, in the Elsey National Park. Jeannie Gunn's wrote of her life at Elsey Station in We of the Never Never and in Mataranka's park they have statues of Jeannie and her husband Aenaes and also the Little Black Princess, Bett Bett. Their homestead was recreated for the movie, We of the Never Never and stands near the entrance to the Mataranka Springs. We donned cossies to have a swim in the beautiful clear blue water of the springs - quite an oasis amongst the palm trees growing there. Last time I swam there the water was 34C, too hot for me, but this time ... read more
