Hi guys, The day started at 6:30. After getting all the stuff and doing some last grocery shopping, we left Katherine to go to Tennant Creek. After an hour, we stopped at Mataranka: the capital of Never never, the sign said. There we got to the thermal pools. These were natural hot water pools, this is ground and rain water that's been warmed by the inside of the Earth. It was such clear water and beautiful surroundings. In the middle of rainforrest! After a swim, we left to continue our journey. In a town called Jamaryah we ate something at a small hotel or bar thing, with a free mini zoo next to it. They had salt water crocodile, blue tongue lizards, and wallabies you could just pet! Really cute. Back on the road, we saw ... read more

Today we visited Nyinkka Nyunyu Art and Culture Centre. The architect in me was impressed by the building itself, but the experience overall was lovely as well. Nyinkka Nyunyu is a museum worth some of your time. It’s mainly about art and the regional history. I realize that I have been talking a lot about how you should check out the history and aboriginal culture when you are in Australia. I am sorry for all of you who are not as interested in it as I am. But anyway, Nyinkka Nyunyu. If was fun, I recommend it, go check for yourself! img=http://www.australiasoutback.com/~/media/Images/TourismNT/Tennant%20Creek%20and%20Barkly/nyinkka_nyunyu_art_cultural_centre_ten_bar_r_11698_540x304.ashx?bc=White //Lovisa... read more

In Tennant creek we found out about Kelly’s Ranch where you get a guided tour on horseback on which you get to hear stories about aboriginal culture and get some bush-tucker stops along the way. It sounded interesting so why not give it a go? If you feel like you need to, like we did, you can sign up for a one hour long group riding lesson before the real ride. You don’t need any earlier experience, which makes this an activity everyone can enjoy. Unless you like Linnéa is allergic, then this might not be your best option. But she still enjoyed it in between the sneezes. It was a lot of fun, and as fascinating as we thought it would be if not more. On the other hand, since none of us is a ... read more

Well what an interesting day, a day of diversions and some interesting driving. Left DW and the crowds to retrace our tracks for 36kms then taking a right hand turn off the bitumen onto the Buchanan Hwy. First leg is 180kms from Dunmara to Top Springs. Bob had read a bit about this pub but when we arrived decided to keep going and having had enough of the dust took the bitumen north to Victoria Hwy,. We had already pulled off the road earlier in the morning to allow three road trains to pass, leaving us choking in red dust. However, after about 5kms curiosity got the better of us and we did a U turn back to face another 240kms of “dirt”. Are we mad! The road would take us in the back way to ... read more

.....all we can say is they better receive the correct trailer part tomorrow morning or we may just about go postal!. Have checked out every attraction in town and surrounds over the last 3 days and are officially ready to move on. We seem to have mastered the management of the annoying biting ants that seem to be infesting everything in sight. The Patrol tyres sit inside 4 squares of Ant killer powder, plus talcum powder....seems to keep the buggers out! And the park people have done their bit to keep them out of our digs so all good.... Have a roast lamb dinner in the oven and are ready to get the trailer back tomorrow, pack up and be ready for departure first thing on Tuesday.....hooray....but they better have the part......I'm just sayin! Next update ... read more

OK, so after breaking the new record for most Ks in a day (640) we arrived at Tennant Creek and promptly had the trailer in to see the trailer doctor whose assessment was that it was seriously broken and no clever welding or trickery was going to get it on the road without new parts.......from Adelaide...yeehaa... So while our new suspension springs are travelling up we are going to enjoy the sights and sounds of Tennant Creek. This could usually be covered in an afternoon really but we are going to spread it out......real thin! Off to check out the local chinese eatery tonight... apparently the best in NT! A fella we were buying some new walking boots for Pete from spoke highly of it and that tonight was special because he was the entertainment for ... read more

3/10/11 Dear family and friends, After a wonderful 5 and a half months in the amazing WA, we crossed the border into the NT a week ago and this afternoon after driving 500 km's, crossed into QLD! As we have wanted to phone family and friends in WA, QLD and Victoria this week, we have spent all week asking each other, "What's the time in…?" as it is different in WA, NT, QLD and now also in Victoria as last night daylight-saving started there! Last night our phones must have thought we were in SA and the clocks went forward automatically! As we hurried this morning we realised the error and gained a whole hour, only to have to give back half an hour this evening as we crossed the QLD border! The last blog ended ... read more

Deel 11: dins. 27sept.

By Grace. Most of the day was spent in the car-we had a long way to go. On the way, we stopped at Devil's Marbles. The Aboriginals believe that they are the eggs laid by the Rainbow Serpent. We stopped to get petrol at two roadhouses-they weren't very nice, especially the toilets. At Tennant Creek, we stayed at a cabin instead of the van so that we could leave quickly the next morning. That night, we went to a Bush Tucker Man's performance teaching us about bush tucker. He was half Aboriginal and was born in Mt Isa. He grew up on the Georgina River in Cammoweal (QLD), with his mum and lived in a humpy (under gumtree 69!). He never went to school (lucky!). He taught us how to cook fish on a fire, the ... read more
