Arriving at the Wilderness Lodge I was the only one on site so Paul and Rowan two of the staff offered to take me to see the sunset in the Canyon I managed to get some more lovely shots which I hope you like, before returning to the camp to meet the other "Honeymoon" couple from Italy! We had a very enjoyable meal together underneath the stars and nearly full moon consisting of delicious fish in herbs followed by bbq kangaroo and camel meat, roasted vegetables and salad and fruit salad for desert washed down with a nice Hardy's Australian Red! A rather idealic setting and so peaceful and atmospheric in the outback and lovely company and people to look after us... read more

Needless to say I slept very well in my very comfortable tent but only until 5am when it was up again to go to Kings Canyon to do a three hour walk along the rim of the canyon Our guide Evan was very knowledgeable about the different geology, forna and flora as well as being very amusing in his stories It was a truly fabulous walk including a visit to The Garden of Eden and the lost city amongst these intriguing orange rock formations Again the photos speak for themselves but a magnificentt area to be privileged to be in This morning has definitely been a highlight culminating in finding a little Deviled Back Lizard in the road which we brough back to camp (see photo) We leave now for the 3 hour coach trip to ... read more

We headed for the Kings Canyon hike. Our guides prepared us all morning for the 3 hour hike. We had to drink water all morning. About 10 people 'do the hike I prepared myself but didn't go because i was worried about heights. About 10 people didn't go so we hiked and explored the canyon from the ground while we waited for the others. After that we continued the trip to Kings Creek Station a working camel station. Tonight we were spending the night in swags. We got together as a team and unloaded the truck of all the swags blankets and sheets. A sheet and blanket were placed in the swag. A blanket was also used rolled up as a pillow. We set up our swags and then had dinner cooked up by the cowboys. ... read more

Rode the 300 kms to Kings Canyon yesterday and spent today walking all through it. It certainly is understandable why the area was (is) so important to the local people. The area contains several pockets of green, with “ghost” eucalyptus trees and pools hidden in deep clefts in the rock, in the middle of what is otherwise red-grey/green desert. The beautiful well used track around the rim of the main canyon sometimes comes breathtakingly close to sheer drops in many places. Tomorrow is our first serious attempt at riding on unsealed roads (on a back road to Alice Springs). It’s 200 kms from here to Hermannsburg, a small Aboriginal community with an historic mission station (now handed back to its original Aboriginal owners) where the pavement begins again. ... read more

We then went back to Alice, Via King's Canyon it was huge, some incredible views around there. We had cheesey tune day and games on the coach and went to ANZAC Hill, the memorial for the Wars and we visited the flying doctors. I put my deposit on a plane, got to go back in 10yrs to see it!!! Well as early mornings go this was the worst, we were picked up at 5am to go in a hot air balloon. it was definately worth it although it was too cloudy to see sunrise = but still worth it. we were up at 4.15am and drunk by 8.30! the flight came with a champagne breakfast, chicken, quiche, fruit and chocolate cake and lots and lots of champagne. Me, Vic, Kate and Julie all ended up ... read more

The tour pick up time was 6am so had to be up and ready for this, they turned up at 615 and we went to pick a few more people up i total there was 17 of us on the tour. The driver took the $25 park fee from us all then told us that we had a 2 hour drive before we stopped for breakfast then another 3 hours so most people went to sleep. We stopped for breakfast and to refuel the bus then went on our way to Kings Canyon. We arrived at Kings Canyon and was advised about the walk we were going to take. We started the walk at 12:30pm and the temperature on the was 46C in the shade, we made a very steep climb and felt the heat where ... read more

An early start, jen, steve and myself left alice springs at 6am ready for the 500km drive through the outback. It is a lot greener than i thought but there has just been a load of rain. Now very hot, 42 degrees or so and it is a dry heat. We got speaking to a really nice 'real life aussie' on the trip who told us about the aboriginal history and life in the outback. The tourgroup was different as there were only 3 british, normally we dominate but here we were taken over by germans! When we got to kings canyon, we had to hike up a bloody rock called heartattack hill (so called as 20 people have died climbing it!). don't think us brits were quite prepared for the heat but we managed, with ... read more

The journey from Kata Tjuta to King's Canyon saw the earth turning redder, and the trees growing more profusely. Though the King's Canyon resort is run by the same company that runs Yulara (that kinship being evident in the $39 dorm price), the facilities were a mixed bag, with the dorm containing a TV and fridge, and the bed being a proper bed rather than a bunk, but the toilet block smelling strongly of urine. The bed was also on some casters with a low coefficient of friction relative to the floor - my tossing and turning during the night propelled me half-way across the room by dawn. Another early rise saw me girding my loins for the classic 6km King's Canyon rim walk, in the company of a couple of tour groups. The fly situation ... read more

Our second night was spent at King’s Creek. Our dinner tonight was cooked in several camp ovens - wrought iron pots sitting on the campfire coals. We cooked damper bread, potatoes and chicken. It was strange having a campfire when it was over 30 degrees, but it was a good meal. The next morning we got to sleep in until 6:30. Luckily, others on the trip liked their sleep as well, so we pushed Debora to later wake-up times than she initially proposed. At King’s Canyon, we really began to see the spectacular scenery that the Northern Territory’s Red Centre has to offer. The red cliffs that surrounded us all day were simply awesome. We began our walk with “Heart Attack Hill” - a climb straight up from the base of the canyon to the rim. ... read more
