We arrived at Kings Canyon...what a sight! It was mid afternoon and the sun was still shining but starting to go down a little...we made a cuppatea and sat on the bench seat...it was beautiful! Kings Canyon Resort campground was very well presented, they had a small shop where you could buy milk, bread and other small items...a good Cafe' and a really good bar-b-que area for dinner...the Barramundi was awesome and Keith loved his 350g rib eye steak! 'The Roadies' entertained us throughout the night with Australian ballads and jokes...it was school holidays and they had lots of the kids helping out with the show...the kids loved it and so did everyone else! The highlight of Kings Canyon had to be our Canyon Rim Walk, 6.6 klms starting with a stretch that seemed to go ... read more

Panoramic View: Kata Tjuta On The Horizon. We didn't want to get too OTT with Uluru Leaving Alice Springs And then we were off on our next odyssey. It was a 5:05am pick up (ouch!) so it was up in the pitch black. Due the nature of a 16 bed dorm, we hadn't had the best nights sleep, but beggars can't really be choosers as we all know. We met Sauce, our guide for the next 6 days until Adelaide. He was a true Aussie bush-man; thick accent, long hair and beard and an attitude weathered by the outback desert. From the off, he started calling us both "Scotty" due to our nationality. We soon met the rest of our group which consisted of 2 Dutch girls, a German girl, a Danish girl, 3 Brazilian girls, ... read more

Drove to here about 4 hours form Uluru, camped the in the swags again and had a 4.45am rise for the second morning in a row to see the sun rise in the Kings canyon which was worth the early rise. Walked round the Canyon which is really really impressivwe and worht every penny, it takes about 3 hours to walk and our guide was great with all information about the area. After the trek its time for lunch and a 5 hour drive back to Alice Springs where we have dinner that night to say goodbye to all the group and part our own ways... read more

King’s Canyon Kings Canyon Rim Walk http://www.nt.gov.au/nreta/parks/find/watarrka.html We woke up relatively early. The fun part was that we didn’t have to pack everything up and load the troopies this morning. We were going to come back to pack up after the hike. It was a cool morning and I was glad I had a long sleeve shirt to wear. The toughest part of the Kings Canyon Rim walk was the first 30 minutes. In this time we hike vertically for what seemed like forever to get to the rim of King’s Canyon. Once we got to the top the view was amazing. I really enjoyed this walk because it wasn’t very hot because of the cloud cover and it was very flat. The nice thing about it being a relatively flat walk was that I was ... read more

Our morning consisted of getting up and piling in the troopies for a nice long ride to Kings Canyon. Before we left Mazz gave each troopie a roll of colored/scented trash bags to create something that we would judge when we got to Kings Canyon. I was in the “meals on wheels” food troopie with Lyndon and Ricky. We had the pink trash bags that smelled like berries. Ricky suggested we be superheros. Lyndon suggested Flys as a theme. I sketched out our costumes. Ricky and I worked on our costumes diligently for about the first hour of our drive but then gave way to naseua and lack of motivation. During our drive we stopped and saw many different animals. The first of which was a snake in the middle of the road. Lyndon said a ... read more

Woke up early to slightly damp, dewy swags. Ate an early breakfast, and then we were off to hike King's Canyon! It was a very steep initial uphill hike (fortunately it was man-made stairs), and then leveled off for our rim walk. The view from the top was absolutely spectacular! I can't even begin to describe how beautiful the view was; pictures won't do it justice. It was much less touristy than Kata Tjua and Uluru, so there was virtually no one there but our group. Also, the views were fantastic--I seriously just wanted to sit on a ledge for the whole day and soak in the view in the warm sun (finally it had cleared!) and the gentle breeze. I took about 100 pictures that morning... it's honestly one of the most beautiful places I've ... read more

After looking around for a while Beej pulled off the road and found a pretty decent open area that had been used as a camp some time back. It was pretty flat if a little rocky, on one side the landscape had a few larger hill formations which for the area were quite unusual. As Beej had not camped here before it felt even more like an adventure. Straight away we all had tasks to do, Beej never told you what was needed he just expected you to know. He also never forced people to get involved so there were just a couple of people that constantly sat on their backsides. It did get annoying at times especially when it came to washing up and clearing away but as far as I was concerned they were ... read more

Tues 27th Nov: Up at 0500 to pack up, check out, store rucksack and ring home. No real change and ordered by Mum to go and have a good time. Bus picked us up outside the hostel. Glen, our driver/guide seemed really moody so had a feeling things could be interesting. Got the fromt seat which was cool, loads of leg rooms. So, we headed off to Kings Canyon. 700km with no a/c and around 35 degrees, not fun! We had regular stops throughout the day so it wasn't all bad. At Kings Canyon, we started on the 6km walk. It started with a steep climb of the canyon face and once that was done it was thankfully much flatter, though no shade so glad to have 2L of water with me. Half way around we ... read more

Rain!!!! Ok, I know those in North America and especially in Europe cannot appreciate it. They get rain all the time. But live for 5 months in Alice Springs, or for a year in Australia, and you will start to appreciate any drop of rain. Especially in the outback. So yes, it rained in the outback. Not only a bit of a sprinkle, but absolute downpours. Numerous downpours. And it flooded. So what did that mean? We were stuck at King's Canyon resort, as King's Creek had risen rapidly to over a metre, at one stage getting to 1.85 metres! (I seem to have a thing with getting stuck at Voyages Resorts for several nights...) We had nightmare passengers as well...couldn't we have gotten stuck with some cool, relaxed, English-speaking passengers? Nope, that would've been too ... read more
