The next day we grabbed some supplies from the nearby filling station and got the bus to Kings Canyon for the 6km walk. My wife quite anxious about taking our son and daughter on this walk as many of the pictures she had seen of the canyon showed the steep shear drops, however it wasn’t too bad and we made sure that we kept them on a tight grip for certain parts of it. The pace was quite slow, given the AAT Kings usual clientele, but at least that meant that it wasn’t too hard for the children. We took a stash of chocolate with us to keep them going and our guide, Jenny, was on hand during the walk with her usual fantastic commentary. There was an optional diversion to the Garden of Eden, so ... read more

Kings Canyon Aboriginal name: Watarraka Kings Canyon was a 300km drive west of Uluru down the Lasseter Hwy. The road to Kings Canyon passes along the southern side of the Gillies Ranges which, over a distance of some 40-50 km, slowly rise so that by the time they reach Kings Canyon they are over 100 metres above the surrounding countryside. Kings Canyon (or Watarraka) Nation Park is probably one the most spectacular sights in central Australia, as its red rock formations create a mysterious landscape. It was well worth the diversion. We decided to do the ‘Kings Canyon Walk’, which a 6km strenuous climb up to the steep cliffs that tower over the canyon, the walk skirts the canynons rim over looking sheer cliff faces, enters the 'Garden of Eden', with tranquil pools and pre’historic rock ... read more

Firstly, thanks to everyone for their great comments and good wishes. Its really good to hear from you all. We will get around to individual emails at some point, but the mobile broadband plan that we chose is fairly restrictive on time (we are on a budget now that we are unemployed) and so by the time we load the travelblogs, there is not much left over every month. We left Ayers Rock campground at 8.50am on 5/7 (seems the ‘hares’ are rubbing off on us!) for the 293km drive to Kings Canyon. Oh, forgot to tell you in the last blog that at Ayers Rock we had a disaster…….Wes ran out of beer!!!!! He went to buy some at the resort bottle shop, but after the guy at the bar put the 6 pack of ... read more

After returning from sunrise I had some breakfast and heading off to Kings Canyon. It took just over three hours to get there and after my early morning I was feeling tired. This place is operated by the same resort company so yet again some very high prices. It was quiet though so I did get my own room with TV. The TV turned out to be very valuable as after dark there was nothing to do. Before dark however I drove to the Canyon and did a small walk through its base. After the previous two days walking my legs weren't up to anything more strenuous. I got back by sun set and spent the evening watching films on the only TV channel I could pick up and drinking wine. The next morning I had ... read more

Kings Canyon Rim Walk was our longest hike I think. It was most definately the most tiring anyway as the heat was so intense. Halfway through the walk we came to the Garden of Eden where you could go swimming...in freezing cold water...that was a nice dingey green colour...I passed on this one... Our last night bush camping was wonderful. Scott brought out his guitar, although it was left handed so I couldn't play anything on it. We all had a sing song round the warmth of the campfire, had some wine and dinner...and then someone accidently set Scott's only wooden spoon on fire...this became a topic in one of the songs...ahaha... Throughout the trip I heard alot of traditional Australian songs, and plenty of drinking songs...my favourite being 'Duncan', where you change the name, then ... read more

The final day of the safari started at a more respectable hour (04:45) and promised some sun. Breakfast was really beautiful under a star filled sky. Once camp had been cleared away for the final time we headed for url= http://www.marimari.com/cOnTENT/australia/popular_places/northern_territory/kings_canyon/main.html/Kings Canyon. We arrived at 06:50 and headed on a mind blowing 8 Km walk through the towering walls, crevices and plateaus of the canyon. The weather was sunny but not too hot, and even the flies seemed to be giving us some peace. The walk was broken up with a swim in the beautiful “Garden of Eden” a freshwater hole, which was cool and crocodile free!!! After Kings Canyon we headed to Kings Creek Station, where we enjoyed our final lunch together. Then we embarked on a 4 hour journey back to Alice Springs, this ... read more

We set off early on Saturday morning with a group of 16 fellow travellers and our driver, Sandy, on the 'Wayward bus' bound for Adelaide via some of the most remote parts of the earth. Our first stop was the baking hot Rainbow Valley in the desert where Emma and I wandered off from the group, spotted wavy trails in the sand and managed to startle a baby BROWN SNAKE! He was only about 9 inches long but still one of the most deadly slitherers on the planet...and boy did he move fast (thankfully away from us!). We also stopped for fuel and refreshments at Stuart's Well where we met some orphaned bush animals (a baby camel and a couple of joeys) but more famously wintnessed the antics of Dinky the famous singing Dingo. Apparently, he ... read more

got woken up by the sun, shining down on me :) absolutely beautiful, warm, sunny morning. so off we headed for our final destination of the trip, kings canyon. and yet another 8km walk. eep, don't think i've ever walked so far!!! once again with the wow factor though. it was totally worth every second of pain trying to hike up what might as well have been a bloody mountain! it was so so steep!!! (thankfully it was all downhill on the way back :)) again, saw many lizards and birdies - good fun this wildlife spotting lark! we headed to the garden of eden, which is a natural swimming hole at the bottom of the canyon. it was so peaceful and beautiful, and 5 of us were brave enough to actually go for a (very ... read more
