Hi all,Bron here. A day behind but we lost connection. Anyway, here goes nothing. Up early (nothing new yet) and headed to the cultural centre here at Cooinda. The Kakadu info brochure indicated a snack bar ( we presumed coffee) but no. We also presumed that it would be air conditioned, wrong again. But, the information was fantastic. It was based on the culture of the local tribes and included artifacts, movies, photos , fantastically set out but incrediby stifling. As i am blogging (Ken this is for you) Ro is taking photos and rob and i are not particuarly impressed. Maybe they will end up on the blog, who knows. Anyway back to the resort for that long awaited latte and we then head to the Yellow Water Cruise. An hour and a half of ... read more

There is no rushing with Carl on this tour, a very leisurely wake up followed by a cruisey breakfast and then when we're ready time to jump on the bus for the days adventure. The track we had to take to get to Twin Falls was a narrow, sandy, very bumpy 4x4 only track, and with Carl as your driver (he may like to take mornings slowly but there no suggestion that he even knows the word slow when behind the wheel) it can be quite a harrowing experience. Apart from a few sore bottoms from all the bumps, he did get us there in one piece! We first went to the bottom of Twin Falls via a short boat ride and a small walk. As nice as it was it was a bit dissapointing because ... read more

Tour time!!! We've got a full bus of travellers and a right fruitcake (in a nice kinda way) for a driver, Carl. My first impression was..this guy is on something, but it's just him. Mary River was our first stop where we had a boat cruise down a billabong. There were so many birds about, Jabiru, Ibis, Brolga, Ancoran, Ducks, Geese and so many more. But, forget about the birds, that's not what we're here for, I'm all about the crocs! I got to see my first Saltwater croc today and I'm well chuffed, they're big buggers! I also got a lovely Locus Lilly hat and had a munch on the seeds, which, were quite tasty! Then we went to Ubirr to look at Aboriginal rock paintings. One of them is underneth a rock ledge that ... read more

After a 3 hr fligtht I arrived to Darwin early in the afternoon in an intense heat, and after cooking something to eat at the hostel, I decided to walk around town for a bit, but as it was so hot I think I only lasted 20min before decided to go back to the hostel and relax by the pool area. After dinner I decided to go for a quick drink to one of the bars and as soon as I sat down with my big glass of wine, 2 guys from a table next to mine invited me to join them. Their names where Peter, a lawyer from Perth and Michael, a journalist working for the ABC. They were both very nice and we had a nice evening drinking and talking. Michael (or Dutchie as ... read more

Our visit to Kakadu began with a decision to take the Watergate on a 40km long very corregated dirt road to Gunlom(Waterfall Creek). It was well worth the drive to the campground at the edge of a waterhole with a 75m waterfall. We spent 2 days swimming in the water and relaxing before making our way to Cooinda Resort Caravan Park in the centre of Kakadu. The next morning we boarded the Yellow Water Cruise to go crocodile hunting and we were not disappointed , we saw about 20 crocs including a great performance from FatBoy when he swam across the water in front of the boat and climbed onto the bank , the guide took the boat over to the bank and stopped it right next to FatBoy who is obviously very use to visitors ... read more

Today was a much better day! We woke up after a good nights sleep and checked out at 10am. Next stop was McDonalds for breakfast and then we jumped in a taxi to 'Wicked Campers'. It took a while to sort out all of the administration but eventually we were given a Kia Pregio with "Hell Boy" as our theme. We were all very excited and headed south to get some fuel and food supplies. After 150km we headed into Kakadu National Park and stopped for a game of American Football at the side of the road. We reached Jabiru, the main town inside the park around 5.30pm. By now it was getting dark so we headed off down the road in search of our first campsite. We found a perfect site in the bush surrounded ... read more

Mon 21st July We have a very early start; awake 5:45, pickup 6:15. We plan to get some sleep on the coach, but the driver / guide has other plans. He talks pretty much constantly over the microphone for the whole journey, covering a plethora of subjects from Aborigine culture to Australian history to plant biology to cow herding techniques to geography. Most of it is interesting stuff, but it is hard to take a lot of it in. We have about 4 hours of this, with a brief comfort stop, and the scenery itself was quite monotonous - mile after mile of savannah woodland. It's possible we may have had somewhere between 39 and 41 winks at some point. But the time passes pretty quickly and we reach our first real stop in Kakadu, where ... read more

Saturday July 19th We began the day by getting on the Kakadu Highway just outside of the park. Our first stop was at Gunlom, a small waterfall and plunge pool. To get there we had to drive along a thirty something kilometre unsealed (dirt) road. The road was in decent condition however we were not supposed to be on unsealed roads and it was going to take at least an hour each way to get there. We made it about 700 metres before calling it quits and turning back. The next place we stopped was called yellow waters. It was similar to Florida’s everglades with light boats operating up and down it and crocodiles inhabiting its waters. After watching a crocodile here for a good while we continued on to Mirrai lookout. It was a 1.5 ... read more

Travelblog 9 Thursday 19th June: Moved to Browns Creek on the Daly River for a bush-camp. Leonie took the car and trailer and I drove the boat. Fished our little butts off and never landed a decent fish. Into Palmerston for food and fuel (by-Harry we seem to go through these things). Spent the night in Berrimah then out to Kakadu and 4 Mile Hole on the Wildman River. Met-up with PK and Kim King and Aloha and Ken Brown. The camp area had been devastated by the National Park Rangers doing a hazard reduction burn-off. Its hard to understand how these unqualified toilet cleaners obtain the authority to light bushfires??? Fished the billabong and caught lots of undersized Barra (legal size is greater than 55cm). Finally, with more coaching from PK and Kim and different ... read more
