Geo: -12.4613, 130.842Another scorcher today as we head 15 minutes out of town to Crocodylus Park, boasting more crocs to see than anywhere else in Australia. This park also housed some white lions, tigers, meerkats and the usual suspects you would expect. The croc tour began at 10.00 am and we met some very large and troublesome crocs which had been netted and relocated here because they were miss-behaving. One called Eric had supposedly eaten a person but had missed a lead injection as there was no proof. We got so close to these guys that Deb started to freak out so we moved on to the smaller crocs. The guides told us stories about the cost of Gucci croc leather bags fetching $80,000 but we raised our eyebrows at that, believing it was a pitch ... read more

Geo: -12.4611, 130.842As we sat in the saloon car and whiled our way into Darwin we reflected on the spectacular and diverse landscapes we had covered and the amazing holiday we had experienced so far. On pulling up at the station it was raining the temperature was 34 degrees and the humidity 98.7% (oh boy)!An array of buses awaited to take us on our 30 minute trip into the city and we were surprised by how clean and modern it was and at the very nice room we had at the Mantra on the Esplanade which had a view of the harbor and also backed onto Mitchell St the main restaurant and bar precinct in town.We decided to do a little exploring and to find a restaurant called Hanuman but headed in the wrong direction and ... read more

Well, well, well. We have been "not so patiently" waiting a long time to announce that we have once again given up our secure full time jobs and are well and truly ready to hit the road again. It has been a long time coming but as much as we love Darwin and will definitely miss it we do have itchy feet again and more than ready to commence exploring once more. Our plans that have taken shape so far are: 01/05/16 Darwin to Bangkok 02/05/16 Dubai for 2 nights 04/05/16 Italy for 8 nights 13/05/16 London for 4 nights 17/05/16 Motorhome swap for 8 weeks exploring the South of England 13/07/16 Manchester for 6 nights 19/07/16 Bangkok for 3 nights 22/07/16 Darwin for 7 days before heading for Perth via Brisbane! 29/07/16 Darwin to Perth ... read more

Tuesday 20th October 2015 The morning was spent cleaning the boat. Windows were washed, chrome polished up and the decks were scrubbed and cleared of bladders and pumps. Once again it looked like the boat that left Airlie Beach. The crew numbers increased dramatically just after 1400hrs with the arrival of Diane, Jen and Judy, Barry, Ian and Rags’ wives respectively. Originally they were joining us until Friday, by which time the boat would have had its engines serviced, and then fly home. It has now been decided that they would stay on board with us until we reach Broome, giving them the opportunity to see the waters of the Kimberley. As this area should be the highlight of the trip it was an opportunity that was too good to miss! Judy and Rags caught up ... read more

Wednesday 14th - Thursday 15th October 2015 After leaving Cairns the long leg to Thursday Island began. We hope to get there by 1200hrs tomorrow so that we may refuel. The fueling jetty closes at 1700hrs and does not reopen until Monday. An overnight stop is on the cards but we don’t want to stay all weekend if we don’t have to. Dinner tonight was Tasmanian salmon with potato bake and green beans, followed by tinned peaches and ice-cream. Enjoyed by all but some of us are getting a little worried about our waistlines! Rags had the 2100hrs – midnight watch, he happy that Ian joined him on the flybridge to give some support. The shipping lane was quite narrow in this section with reef and islands all along. To add to this several ships travelling ... read more

Arriving into Darwin at half five in the morning with hardly any sleep, it was a welcoming sight to see my mate Will waiting with a sign welcoming me to Australia, even though he had spelt my name wrong. I have known Will for years through the British Army and he had taken the jump to transfer to the Australian Army last year and had only been in country for 7 months. In fact Will was the one that persuaded me to go travelling for 2 months around South East Asia towards the end of last year and given me the travel bug.For me this was a temporary move back into normality as I moved into his spare room, for Will it was a chance to catch up and find out all about my adventures so ... read more

Well folks, we reluctantly left Camooweal with only a short stretch on the Barkly Highway to the Northern Territory border, then a few more hours drive, turn right to the Three Ways Roadhouse, the intersection with the Stuart Highway, needing fuel we stopped to be greeted at the bowser with a sign "Leave your photo id with the operator before these pumps will work", a welcoming introduction to the NT, ok, fuelled up and asked if we could buy wine, by this time I realised this man had a severe attitude problem, he looked at his watch, said "its after 2pm, ok, wait in the bar area", so we waited and waited, probably 20 minutes before he walked behind the bar, one label only, bottles, ok, I asked for a small taste, horrified, he asked why, ... read more

Darwin. It is a laid back place, mostly friendly and people seem to have time to relax. We didn't see anyone in a big rush all the time we were here....although the heat may have something to do with that! Seriously warm - of course, mid 30's every day and then down to low 20's overnight. We visited quite a few locations around and in Darwin City. Of these, probably the Darwin Botanic Gardens and East Point were our favourites. The Botanic Gardens has a nice coffee shop, trees, birds and other stuff to look at. We went there regularly. East Point is a recreation area not far from town with water (and sunset) views. It also has the WW2 museum which we found very interesting. One of the many highlights of the WW2 museum was ... read more

Monday 20thJuly Our over night flight proves a little difficult as I get the largest chap on the plane next to me. He's so big that he can't fit between the armrests and has to put them down after he's seated. His knees hit the seat in front. I feel trapped in the middle seat and can't even see around him. To make things worse the child in front on us starts crying as soon as we take off and continues for the next 5 hours. Sleep is impossible. We land at 4am and as it's dark we decide to stay in the airport. We eventually decide to take the 8am shuttle bus into town. There's no timetable, the buses only come to meet the flights except by 8.30 it's still not come so we share ... read more

Amazing, it is six months since my last blog and hard to believe that it has taken me so long to, once more, put words to type. Working full time again certainly makes time fly by exceptionally fast but I think maybe it helps that I am still enjoying my job as assistant manager at the book store. The job as manager did arise but I turned it down as I am happy to just cruise these days and leave the responsibility to someone else. Pete has been working in Darwin and also WA as a fly in fly out sheetmetal fabricator and cryogenic insulator (ability to work on hot and cold pipes) and is currently back working in Darwin at the Gas Plant here and still making ridiculously high wages so we are certainly not ... read more
