Ha ha... what fun, Joe and Anita's Pirate Wedding take two. The first one took place in Langkawi a few years ago with friends from the island, this time it was a family event with everybody dressing up. Anita, Joe and I hit the local op shop and kitted ourselves out which was hilarious, and all the friends and family coming did the same. Joe booked a local resort with a pool for the kids and everyone joined in the fun. Congratulations guys x here's to a long and happy life filled with love and lotsa fun... ... read more

Finally time to make it official... Although they had a civil ceremony in Langkawi with a Pirate Party afterwards it was time to make it official. As they have now left the boating life and moved to Darwin, it allowed Joe's family all to be there (well almost). His oldest son baby decided to arrive the same day so a double celebration was to be had! The ceremony was lovely and emotional as these occasions can be, and enjoyed by close friends and family. It was lovely to be there and witness the vows made, having his family there this time was very special and made the occasion. Congratulations Mr & Mrs McDonnell. ... read more

I really feel part of the family at Joe's, they have all welcomed me openly and it has been lovely getting to meet his son's, daughter in laws and grand-daughters. A beautiful family who are loving their Dad being back home. Joe and Anita showed me around Darwin and outlying areas with a memorable trip to see the crocs and other native animals. I find it weird that they have both salt water and fresh water crocs here, there is definitely no swimming at the beach. The crocs are huge... powerful animals and i loved watching feeding time at Crocodylus Park. All the crocs here have been rescued from different situations and have their own pens, they also have a huge breeding centre and research facilities. We joined a tour round the park followed by holding ... read more

The views we had of crocodiles today were superior to those of yesterday! Our tour with Litchfield Escape included a Jumping Crocodile tour on the Adelaide River. Boy did they jump once baited with some raw chicken meat! This tour had only about 14 people on it, so the tour on Paddy’s flat bottom boat was kind of like a private tour. There are only 4 licensed operators of such tours involving wild crocodiles, other operators use captive animals on their own property. Although the boat had steel railings to about 2 meters above the water level, we learn that this would not be a barrier should the animal actually want to get into the boat to get to us. We were told as long as we did not stick our hands outside the railing, that ... read more

We got to see a lot of Darwin today. The weather started off great, nice and cool at maybe mid-twenties, and not humid. That changed quickly at about 1 pm with thunderstorms and a torrential downpour. Luckily we were inside at that point. The Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory featured the enormous stuffed salty “Sweetheart”, Aboriginee art and displays of the Christmas 1974 Cyclone Tracy that devastated 70% of Darwin. At the Military Museum - Defence of Darwin Experience, we learned about that dreadful February 19, 1942 attack by more than 200 Japanese bombers that levelled Darwin and killed more than 200 people. It’s amazing that the Australians do not appear to harbour any ill will against the Japanese for this and many additional attacks (64) over the next 18 months, contrary to ... read more

Today we head for Darwin. Perhaps a little less heat but certainly a lot more humidity awaits. It was nice having a vehicle in Katherine since it’s pretty difficult to get around otherwise. Our first stop of the day was the School of the Air but we had mistakenly thought it was open to visitors. We almost visited a local diggeridoo shop, but the caretaker could not find the proper key. It was kind of a cool location though, under a huge mango tree with chicken running around freely. The Katherine History Museum is a must stop on this visit. Great history, many antique farm implements, vehicles and the Gypsy Moth that Dr. Clyde Fenton flew, after crashing three others. We watched a video on the disastrous 1998 Katherine flood. Having seen the Gorge from within, ... read more

So my trip to Australia was beginning. On the way to Darwin my flight had a stopover in Manila which is where I had arranged to meet Laurent – who for the next year is my travel buddy. We were booked on the same plan from Manila to Darwin and luckily were able to sit together. We arrived in Darwin at around 5.30am By the time we'd gone through customs, collected our bags and got a taxi to our hostel it was 6:30am. Understandably we weren't able to check in to our hostel but luckily were able to leave our bags. We walked down to a local beach and watched the sunrise there. At 11 we were able to check in to our room and so we napped for a few hours. I was tired. I'd ... read more

Mataranka - Darwin The hot springs at Mataranka were excellent for soaking away the dust. We relaxed in the water and Kevin did some running repairs and rearranged the back of the ute. The last night in Mataranka the fridge decided it wasn't getting enough power and turned off - more spoiled meat. Good thing we didn't have much left... We arrived in Darwin Thursday afternoon and set up camp at Hidden Valley Caravan Park. The first visit was to an auto electrician and battery shop, then we headed off to Mindil Beach for the sunset markets. Darwin is bloody hot, with no relief at night - definitely not good when combined with hot flushes and night sweats. Oh well - it is Darwin and hot weather is to be expected... Friday morning Kevin went off ... read more

Darwin is a beautiful city! The beautiful sunsets over the water, the beautiful green gardens, the unbusyness and laid back lifestyle and history around every corner! Driving in to the city on the main road in at 10am on a Monday morning, Nathan and I had one other car traveling the same direction as us on a four lane highway!! Would definitely have been much busier in Brisbane lol. We stayed for 5 nights at a little WikiCamps place called Lucy’s Rest (Lucy being the the lovely dog who visited us daily with lots of Licks!). It is very much a bush camp and only about 20 minutes outside of the city centre. Nathan and I went to the Military Museum which holds so many items and information about the wars that Australia have been involved ... read more
