We left a still wet Sydney this morning. The rain was still falling, the roads quite flooded and traffic jams everywhere our driver was late ( apparently caused by a flat battery) but we made it to airport, there was about half an hour on the tarmac waiting for take off because of misty conditions but we arrived in glorious sunshine to 30C in Darwin. So we have spent the afternoon in and near the hotel swimming pool...very nice. However its now 5pm and we have huge black cloud and thunder ..but that's expected 'up the Top End' which is what the Aussies call the Northern Territory. Last night we learned all about the old area of Sydney called The Rocks..basically built up by the British convicts but there is lots of earlier history... about the ... read more

We arrived in Darwin in torrential rain and its rained on and off ever since. Apparently the wet season has started later than usual this year and is now making up for lost time! We arrived at 06.00 so the first thing Brian wanted was breakfast. I wanted sleep. I found the overnight flight very tiring and not something I would do again. Anyway sftrr breakfast and sleep we took a stroll in the wrong direction! I thought that the taxi driver had said turn right out of your hotel band its a short walk to the harbour. We should have gone left! You know how there are some parts of every city where you don't take visitors.. we eventually found the city centre. It's a small city with just over 100,000 population. Lots of history ... read more

This will be my last blog for 2014 and I can’t believe how fast the year has gone and how much Pete and I have packed into it. What with living in Perth and then leaving to cross the Nullabor and then up the centre to Darwin and now living and working in Darwin, with Pete being offered full time work at the gas plant, it has been all go but we wouldn’t have it any other way, (apart from maybe if we had won Lotto and then we would definitely not be working)! Anyway Darwin is now truly into the build up time of the year with the humidity high and with everyone looking forward to more rain falling to cool things down. I love working in the air conditioning at the shopping centre and ... read more

Finally another update! Due to not having any access to the internet and the lack of electricity on our road trip we have not been able to update the blog for a while, but now it's time again! We have now left the little town of Richmond about 3 weeks ago and are currently in Darwin, but I will take you through the details. So, since last time a lot of things have happened. To begin with we bought a car in Charters Towers just 400 km west of Richmond. It's a little Suzuki Grand Vitara with 4WD which is going to take us around Australia. It has been so nice to have access to our own car while staying in Richmond since there is not a lot of public transport present in the little town. ... read more

So I was off on my own again, "now the real travelling starts" I said to myself. I had been away for nearly 5 weeks; 33 days in total and had already flown 4 times and visited 3 countries but now the adventure lie ahead. I had gotten used to being with family the last few weeks in both Andrea and Dawn's houses and had become comfortable with being around familiar faces and with people I liked and got on with. Now I was braving the world of travelling which can be daunting and sometimes lonely. I was, however feeling excited too as this would be my first time in Australia's Northern Territory. I'd previously worked in North Western Australia in the mining town of Port Headland for three months but saw the trip to the ... read more

Fogg Dam Conservation Reserve is located 70 km east of Darwin. Unfortunately, we were not able to hike the trails of this reserve due to a large crocodile in the area. (First time I've ever seen a crocodile trap!) We were, however, able to drive and stop at some designated areas with viewing platforms. Over 200 types of birds have been identified in this wetland. In fact, you would be hard pressed to take a photo and not capture a bird! There were the most beautiful pink lily flowers (I know there must be proper name, but that's what I'm calling them). I could have spent days in this park! It was hard to know where to look there was so many birds; it was truly incredible!! Australia has many types of wildlife and plant species ... read more

We had a sleep-in today and then looked at what was left to see in Darwin, preferably without cost, as we've been a bit extravagant lately. I was interested in the Chinese Temple and Museum, for a gold coin donation so we started there. The Darwin Chinese Temple is colourful with its bright yellow roof and red decorations and has two little lions guarding the entrance (made in China and originally belonged to a temple near Pine Creek, before it was destroyed by Australian servicemen). Inside the altar area is under cover but there are two side sections that are open to the sky and have pits underneath to collect and drain away the rain. It certainly makes the place lighter and more airy, despite the incense burning at the various altars. It was built in ... read more

Today we went to look at the Northern Territory Parliament House. Our guide, Jenny, told us that the current building was opened in 1994 and had been designed to conserve energy. It needs minimal artificial lighting because it has light coloured marble floors and walls and also uses light coloured timbers from Tasmania. The front of the high entrance hall and the back of the reception hall are also all glass, letting in a lot of light. The high ceilings, marble floors and extended roof eaves all help keep it cool without air-conditioning, too (except in the Northern Territory Library where the books need to be kept at a regular temperature). Another feature of the two halls is the use of small panes of glass, rather than the usual large plate glass ones you see in ... read more

Replete and ready to continue the day we headed for the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory. It featured a Cyclone Tracy exhibition, which was very graphically portrayed with photos of the areas before and after she struck and some of the twisted metal and building remains. There were also short recordings of people’s experiences of being there. We also stood in a small darkened “cupboard” like space and listened to a recording of the cyclone raging around us that had been taken by someone sheltering in their house. It must have been terrifying hearing that and having no idea what was happening outside or when your house would be torn off its foundation. The flimsy nature of the houses was also demonstrated well with 4 life-sized corners of houses, showing the inside of ... read more
