Roper Bar to Towns River. Leaving Camp at 0908hrs, odometer on 92547kms and temperature 25 degrees. A final drive over the Roper Bar with caravan in tow for photography purposes and then back down the Savannah Way. A rough drive, large corrugation and rocks on the Nathan River Road along the Roper River. Our first stop was Munbililla - Tomato Island. A camp ground based on the edge of the Roper River with Boat Ramp access only. We ate morning tea and used the very clean amenities block. Back on the road travelling through the Limmen National Park. The National Park is located approximately 475kms southeast of Katherine and 182kms north west of Borroloola. It was a very early start for the drive from Darwin to Arnhemland, but luckily I managed a good sleep on the way, whilst still waking up I'm time for sunrise. When we arrived at the boundary of Arnhemland, which is privately owned land, there is a crocodile infested river, where we spotted many crocodiles. Visiting Arnhemland is restricted to very few tour companies, and not cheap, but it was an amazing day and I'm so glad I went, especially as it had been on my bucket list for a few years. When we arrived in the community we collected our local guide, Tomo, and drove to a rock escarpment that we were to climb. We were told it would take 3 hours to get to the top for lunch, even though it didn't look too ... read more

Today is another lay day...seems to be the only time I update my diary entries. So, after a relaxing day in the beautiful Malay Bay we had an early departure to head for Raffles Bay. We started off well with the wind quite light, and the tidal current pushing us along at 5kts. However after a couple of hours the wind died completely and we were fighting a cross current into Bowen Straight. So we had to motor for basically the rest of the day. Navigation was a bit tricky (well in the end it wasn’t, but during it, I was a bit nervous) as we had to pass one side of a sand bar that went right through the middle. From the charts, it looked like there was more room on the western side of ... read more

We stop at Ubirr to check the view into Arnhenland. Andi goes to the facilities and seems to be taking a long time, only to find out she had found a snake in one of the 2 toilets! At Cahills crossing into Arnhemland we spot a foreign tourist fishing on the crossing causeway, Matilda champion crocodile spotter points out a rather large fiend lurking not too far upsteam, pretty sure I know who my money would be on. Next stop Darwin, someone told Andi there were markets there!... read more

I believe the weather has turned!! On the 17thwe departed Cape Stewart at 12pm to do an overnight sail to Golburn Island. We started off at a leisurely 5kts and flat seas...perfect sailing conditions. We went straight into our watch system so that it would be in place overnight. I was on first watch and really enjoyed my 3 hrs. Phil came to take over and during his 3hrs, the winds died and we were only doing 3kts for quite some time. However, during the night, the predicted 25kts came in and with them, the larger seas!! Of course this happened while I was on watch!! “I found the winds and seas” were my handover comments to Phil at the end of one of my watches. We had gusts up to 30kts and the seas were ... read more

Ahh Elcho, home to us all. Had an amazing time here – arrived last Thursday, so will be a week tomorrow. So good seeing all our friends and family again. Had a few fishing trips (nearly every day) and, had an amazing dinner of crayfish and coral trout one night. Can’t beat that! Anchored right out the front of the community, and not very far out, so just a short zodi trip each day. Have also been able to borrow a tinny from a family friend and that has been sitting behind Restless Spirit each night. Saturday we had the semi final for the local footy, so went along to watch that and caught up with so many more friends. Sunday was church…and catching up with many friends. I even got to play along on my ... read more

Dad and Bren arrived Sun 7:40 in Gove and were on the boat by about 8:30. After a short induction and safety brief, we were on our way. As it turned out, it was a very soupy and rough trip to Cape Wilburforce. We dodged most of the rain showers, passed a couple of anchored ships in the harbour and were all happy to drop anchor in Elizabeth Bay a couple of hours later. So, not the best first day for Bren and Dad. Pete and Margaret from Swara II came over for sundowners. The next day we sailed through the hole in the wall. We had to time the tide exactly right so that we could safely pass through. We had to reduce all sail to try and slow down, and typical, the day we ... read more

It always made me cringe that most Australians seemed to have an opinion on aboriginal issues, even though they more than likely had never met an aboriginal person. I have to admit I was totally ignorant about the indigenous culture, being typically schooled on AC (after Cook) Australian history. But since travelling in the Northern Territory, I have tried to listen and expand my limited knowledge. So when an opportunity to sign up for the World Expeditions Arnhem Land marine rescue project came up, I grabbed it with both hands. What really appealed to me was the combination of learning about the Yolngu culture by staying with a family at Nyinyikay - an outstation located in North-East Arnhem Land; and also to undertake a conservation project in my own country rather than some far-flung destination. With ... read more

Jasper is becoming part of the fabric of Ngukurr life. He rides the roads with kids calling his name or yelling' What's your name?' to which he calls back many times 'Jasper!'. He has made friends with the kids next door and the policemens' children up on the ridge. His bike is his favourite mode of travel and will often badger us to ride up to the store to get some milk or other stores. He is also spending long days at his 'school room' at home doing the wide range of tasks set for him by SIDE or his mum. The beauty of the place is not lost on him either with dawns and sunsets being the highlights. So far we haven't been able to venture too far from home as the raods aren't kind ... read more

Hi Everyone , I'm here at Ngukurr ready for my second week teaching. I will have a year 6 this week as opposed to all the 4-5-6, up to 30 kids from two classes. It was all too busy last week but there's apparrently anew teacher taking one of the classes this week . The trip here was a fine adventure with two river crossings and 80 or so k's of dirt road. The community is pretty quiet and there are interesting things happening with the Australian Jazz Orchestra collaborating with local musicians and recording the results. Theyr'e destined for Europe and New York in the not too distant future. Fantastic stuff. I'm yet to meet the musos. There's an arts festival here in a few weeks when Paul Grabowski brings the band up again so ... read more
