Bucket Billabong in Kakadu N.P. proved to be a challenge for me when it came to catching Barramundi. Leonie didn't seem to have many problems getting a 'keeper' each day. She was even catching them and giving fish to other campers. We outstayed Sal, Mark, PK and Kim. They all retreated to the deserted island off the Kimberley Coast. Ken, Aloha, Bungy and Doreen arrived to try their hand at Bucket Barramundi. Enough of the fresh-water fishing lets go to Channel Point on the west side of Litchfield National Park for some salt-water action. We also obtained a permit to enter Arnhem Land for 7 days at Cobourg Peninsula. Channel Point is a mangrove-lined part of the coast near the mouth of the Daly River and east of the Peron Islands. We had five days of ... read more

The next part of our trip Kym and I were really looking forward too, heading to a part of Australia that not many people visit, and those that do, usually fly in from Darwin. The road in to Nhulunbuy is 750 km’s from Katherine with about 650 of those on gravel, and there was a particular river crossing prevented us from getting a transit permit as it was well over 1mtr under water. (You need a permit from the indigenous land owners to do pretty much anything in East Arnhem Land). Once the permit was obtained we headed off bright and early, most of the track had been graded fairly recently so it was good going until we reached the Goyder river crossing. We had already been given the heads up to stay well left, and ... read more

Tue 22nd July Another early start, as we set out for the 2nd day of our Kakadu tour. Amazingly, it seems to have been raining significantly during the night, and there is still a little rain when we awake. This is pretty much unheard of in the dry season - we are later told it has happened just twice in the guide's 6 years experience. Fortunately, the rain soon clears away... Today, we are heading out to Arnhemland, which is not strictly speaking part of Kakadu. It is an Aboriginal-controlled area, entrance to which requires a permit. We are picked up at 7.15 from our hotel in Kakadu, and treated to a beautiful sunrise on the coach, which drop us off half an hour later for transfer to a four-wheel drive minibus. Here, we meet our ... read more

In May, I went to the Northern Territory with my friend Pam for 2 weeks of nature style activities. We started off by going on a private tour of Arnhem land with VentureNorth. A nice bloke called Simon was our guide, cook, driver and general dog's body. He was great! We went from Darwin to Fogg Dam, which was alive with egrets, pied storks, brolgas, and mosquitos! I'm sure that the creatures were out there in their battalions ready with armour piercing weapons at the ready to attack us in convoy and in vast numbers! There are suppossed to be 30 different speicies of mossies in the NT and I'm sure that everyone of those species sent in the warriors to repeatedly attack us over the following 2 weeks! I won't mention these again, but rest ... read more

This entry is mainly for people into fishing... I’ve just got back from a remote part of Australia called Arnhem Land. For those who don’t know, it’s at the very top of the country and is Aboriginal Land. Ordinary Australians aren’t allowed onto this land unless they have the permission of the Northern Land Council. Arnhem Land is about the size of Wales in the UK so we’re talking about a pretty large place. The boys in our family get together every now and then and go fishing and this time my Dad was good enough to organise a week’s fishing at a fishing camp at Ramingining in Arnhem Land. If you’ve seen the film ’10 Canoes’, that’s where we were for the last week. Most of the actors from the film came from the Ramingining ... read more
