On Monday, I went to get a simcard for my iphone (can’t live without it now) and then headed down to a bar to watch the Superbowl for a while. At lunch time I got together with a friend of an uncle of mine – Marcelo Salas (for any Chileans reading this, not related with the football player). It was a very pleasant lunch and we agreed to meet the following week with 2 other people we both know. After lunch he dropped me off at Manly beach, where I took a stroll, had a coffee and then took the ferry back to Circular Quay (right in the center of Sydney). The days have been cloudy with a bit of rain – they say it’s going to be like that for most of the days of ... read more

Final leg of the Oz. trip Following the Murray River from Echuca we went to Tallangatta and camped at their showground next to the lake which replaced the submerged original Tallangatta in the 1950’s. The showground was not a campground as such but is available when not in use. It was another small town with excellent outdoor facilities. The showground had a cricket oval (decided not to park on that), a Ménage where a chap turned up with two horses and rode western style (Liz said so) and was complete with a decent toilet block and showers. Not the horseman the showground. We had to share all this with 4 other fellow travellers all for the princely sum of 10 Aussie dollars, not bad value. From Tallangatta we took the Alpine road to Bright, overMountBeautyand stayed ... read more

Jo started the day off with an early trip to the hairdressers while the rest of us woke up at a more leisurely pace! Ben and Beck arrived just as Jo got back which was perfect timing. As the weather was being less than predictable and the forecast was for rain we diverted away from the original plan of going to Hyde Park and walked down to the Rocks to celebrate Australia Day. After a quick meatball wrap from the market on Argyle Street we had our first drink in the Argyle. We then moved onto the Orient Hotel where they had a live band playing well known music from across the country (if you're Australian!) playing, and there were many locals dancing in what I can only assume is a national dance, or they were ... read more

Hi Guys! We spent 5 days with Anton's cousin, Tracy, in Coogee, which is just down from Bondi. We saw Andrew, Tracy's partner, for a few hours on the Saturday as he was flying out to work on the oil rigs for 6 weeks that evening. On Sunday, Tracy got called into work (she's an air hostess for Qantas) so Anton and I went to explore Coogee. As we were walking along the main street, a girl was giving away free greek yoghurts; so we accepted the offer and ate the delicious yoghurt as we were walking along! On the way back to the apartment, the girl was still giving away the yoghurts and told us to take as many as we liked - result! I picked up 2 and Anton picked up 6!!! At $2 ... read more

It was the last night in Sydney for a couple of friends of Charles and Jo, so we went along to farewell drinks at the Hero of Waterloo in The Rocks. This is a pub that had been mentioned to us by the tour guide on the free walking tour we went on a few months ago, so we’d been keen to check this one out for a while. The legend is that the sailors who would come drinking at the pub would be treated favourably by the bar staff, and would be given a free beer for each beer they bought. This would carry on for the evening until the sailors got so drunk that they passed out. It was then that the bar staff would push the sailors into the cellar through a trap ... read more

The plan for this morning was to find the best way to walk to the departure for the cruise ship on Hickson Rd and also to have an explore so we had a great wander through the alleyways and in and out of all the little nooks and shops. Breakfast was at the Gidday cafe $10 big brekky, a beer at Lowenbrau and then a not so short walk the long way to wharf 5 and the P&OPrincess Jewel, via the Irish Shop On George St. Cruise departure is via a temporary terminal, so a huge tent with plenty of staff directing you along each point. First stop is to hand over your luggage which is then delivered to your cabin. 2ndstop is to book in and get your on board credit card, get your picture ... read more

We went to check out the Rocks Night Markets again tonight as Will and Andy hadn’t seen it and Jo was happy to return to the stalls to do some more shopping! We headed down around 7pm and took a walk through the stalls before catching up with Andy and Jess at the bar in the Rocks square where they had a live band as well. We were kept entertained by an enthusiastic (drunk) host who slurred her way through the introductions of the band and a selection of other entertainers from some street dancers to a magician and a belly dancer! From here we walked around the remaining stalls before heading to the Lowenbrau beer house in The Rocks where Will and Andy took on the challenge of a Stein and the biggest meat ... read more

There is a village bazaar at The Rocks each Friday night in the lead up to Christmas – titled the ‘Village Bizarre’ which consists of some market stalls, lots of food and drink stalls and all kinds of different activities taking place in the street. Will was enjoying a post work beverage with new work colleagues, so Jo headed down to The Rocks with Jess to check out what was happening. We started with a drink with some friends in the Rocks square, whilst listening to a band who guaranteed that they would play any song that you wrote on their blackboard. We gave them Roxanne by The Police, but they also ranged from Cyndi Lauper to Robbie Williams. From here we walked through the market stalls on the cobbled streets to take part in a ... read more
