REFLECTIONS OF AUSTRALIA: The special highlights were staying with good friends Dave & Julie who made us very welcome for the weeks of dipping in and out of Melbourne. We had loads of laughs usually at Phil’s expense however I did surpass myself with the idiotic clap trap that jet lag brought!! We ate and drank and drank more and ate but Gin o’clock was always a high time of the day. They took us to some wonderful restaurants and sights of Melbourne and around which was brilliant. Looking at old photos - very old photos of us before kids and of course the days of kids when Tom and Dominic and Emily and Laura would play for hours whilst you guessed it we ate and drank. The second special highlight in Aussie was meeting up ... read more

Welcome one and all. This is my first post to my brand-spanking-new blog. I've decided to keep a blog for the rest of the year as I travel around the world (or at least those parts of the world that I could fit into twelve months). Why a blog? Well, the short ansewer is that I'm lazy. With a blog I can post the address to everyone who might be interested and then they can check back whenever they're interested. It also means that people don't get flooded with random emails from me as I travel, which hopefully means I don't end up on too many friends' spam lists by the end of the year. Of course, knowing me, the reality is that I'd be likely to start writing emails regularly, then gradually trail off as ... read more

The day I set foot in Sydney, I was in for a surprise! I was told that it was summer in Sydney and that Sydney summers can be really hot. But the day I landed in Sydney, I was chilled to my bones, and I was thankful for a friend’s advice to carry a jacket with me “just in case…...”' Actually, Sydney summer is a little funny. While the sun is harsh on your skin, the wind can freeze you! I was exposed to this contradicting weather pattern quite a lot as I spent a major part of my trip cruising like crazy around the Sydney Harbour! Talk of acquiring a tan one moment while dashing for the jumper the next! My first encounter with the people of Sydney was pleasant. What struck me the most ... read more

I think after nineteen year's of trying to figure out the best way "out" of the area in the winter to connect to international flights at SFO we have finally come up with a workable and relaxing, sort of, method to get to the airport. For year's we would play the fog, rain, small plane lotto. Often loosing or being extremely anxious after flights were delayed or cancelled and ending up in a bus or taxi up to San Francisco. Next came several year's of renting a car and either going up the night before for earlier flights or leaving around noon for evening flights. Worked better but the car had to be returned to the "rental complex" an elevated tram ride from the terminal and necessitated shlepping bags up and down escalators or elevators' Then ... read more

All that is left in my room was everything that Brooke and Callan didn’t take last night - a box of donuts and a 2L bottle of coke, plus some peanuts. I planned to only have the donut on hand this morning, but last night I dozed off without putting much of a dent in my booze stock. I guess that’s something I’ll take into consideration for the rest of my trip. I’m not going to pack too much because I’ll always end up with more than I came with. At lese there weren’t any nasty hangovers to report! ... read more

I only put Sydney air port as i could see it across the water from Dez's house, i couldn't find it here. Saturday 21st March 2009 I was shown in the dark where to get the busses from to get to work. So a little different in the daylight but i think i remembered right. I waited for my first bus to come and was getting a little worried, but it eventually came, and i was even luckyer because when i got off at the rite stop my next bus just arrived. So good timing and only took me half an hour to get to work. When i was working today Kat, Gemma and Dean popped in to say hello! I was a bit shocked to see them, they said i looked like a rabbit caught ... read more

Flying with Aearolineas proved to be a terribly long and unimpressive experience. The in-flight entertainment, which was only initiated on the second flight of 10 hours, was screened on a projector-like square on the wall and would randomly skip between English and Portuguese without warning. During transit in Buenos Aires there was no direction given to the departure gate and it wasnt put on the screen but being the relaxed people they are there was not alarm raised for any passenger that did not work it out themselves. ... read more

After another sleep woke up to find Sydney was two and a half hours away, the map of Australia appeared in the tv infront of me and we are shown to be skirting Broken Hill it's -50 outside and we are flying at 37 thousand feet. Starting to feel a long way from home, Stephen and Whisky (cat), soon it's another round of food this time a continental deli pack now I'm just wishing to get there as the toilet behind me is starting to smell a bit and the flush is getting on my nerves. Feeling releived that the flight is almost over I start to reflect on my journey, in all the seat was very comfortable with a footrest, lumber support and almost horozontal pitch even the food and service was excellent. The best ... read more
