These are the photos from my first few days in Sydney. So far my favourite place here is the Royal Botanical Gardens - it was beautiful and felt worlds away from the busy-ness of the rest of the city. Overall, the city is very nice - reminds me of Boston - feels more sophistated and formal than Toronto or NYC. I don't think either Jason or I are really big-city people though - so we'll see where we end up after this week. I'm very much enjoying the freedom to do whatever and not having a formal plan - very un-me, but isn't that the idea? ... read more

We've now been in Sydney since Sunday night, so I'm starting to learn where everything is! Unfortunately, we don't have internet in our hotel (at least not affordable internet!), so I'm in an internet cafe near Hyde Park. Also, as these computers seem a bit slow, it took me forever just to upload a few Fiji pictures - so no Sydney pictures yet - I promise to return with my own laptop later this week. The weather here is really nice - lots of sun and not quite as hot as Fiji. It was 24 yesterday (20 as the low), so really nice for walking around. We wandered around yesterday morning and ended up in the Botanical Gardens, which were beautiful. From the Gardens I also caught my first view of the Opera House - impressive. ... read more

What are the chances that we would decide to rock on up to Sydney in the worst possible week of the last ten years. Seriously, our timing could not have been more disastrous if we tried. After Byron we did our last stretch of driving, staying overnight in a place called Forster (nothing to report there) and we set off early the next morning to get Madge back in Sydney before our 3pm deadline. Only problem was, the APEC conference was getting under way, and APEC is seems, stand for SHUTDOWN Bush style. Actually it stands for Asia Pacific Really Important Something Or Other, but all it meant to us was that a certain American President was in town for a few days, so Sydney was effectively closed. Lovely. Just what you need when you're hoping ... read more

We CAN'tBERR Another day here! 11 hours sounds like an awfully long time to spend on a bus. And it is. But this was our chosen steed for the journey from Melbourne to Canberra, and that's how long it takes. We could have taken the train which was more expensive and would have saved us just 15mins so we bit the bullet. By travelling overnight we saved a night's accommodation and as there tends not to be that much to see between Australian cities, we thought we could have a nice kip. That was the plan, but unfortunately the highways over here appear to be cobbled, while the coach appeared to be fitted with square wheels. Despite the resulting vibrations we managed to get a few intermittent hours of sleep before arriving in Canberra early in ... read more

G'day all! I just wanted to say a quick thanks to everyone for all the texts, emails, faxes and carrier pigeons that have arrived over the last couple of days wishing me birthday greetings. Just for the record as a couple of you asked the question, we are currently 9 hours ahead of the UK. You'll understand that we had to do something a bit special seeing as Imogen got to fly over the Grand Canyon for her big day. As we are in Sydney, what could be more appropriate than crossing the Sydney Harbour Bridge? And if you're thinking I mean we had a pleasant stroll across to the other side, had a pint and walked home again, you're wrong. I mean we climbed over the archy bit! But first things first, a fry up ... read more

Rachel and Eleanor spent a fab day in Sydney and took the ferry to Manly Beach. The night we arrived we walked to the dock and had a lovely (and expensive!) meal by the water. The next day was sunny and sort of warm (for winter!) and we set off sightseeing about 11am (late for a Kirby adventure!). We took the rough ferry across to Manly Beach and went walking, eating and sunbathing for the afternoon- just check out the beautiful views!! After we'd seen enough of the surfers we went back to the hotel and met Tiffany and Changwon, (our room mates in the hostel) and went out for an Indian with the rest of the family. We spent the rest of the evening at Darling Harbour with lovely views. ... read more

It’s amazing how weather can change the way you think about a place. Sydney has been having record low temperatures this past week. Granted it has only dropped into the low 40’s but that is cold when a lot of the houses do not have heating systems (especially the apartment I’m staying in). I’ve been wearing jeans and a hat to bed and huddling over cups of hot tea with my flatmates. The funny part about this cold weather stint is seeing what people wear….you’d think it was 20 below out. Through it all everyone keeps telling me how great everything is in the summer. There are so many outdoor and rooftop bars/restaurants, grassy parks and beaches that I imagine it would be a different city in the summer. I suppose it would be like ... read more

G’day everyone…..I’m finishing up my first full week in Sydney and loving it so far. The weather remains very mild for it being the middle of winter but I've had to buy a sweater. So funny to think of December as the middle of their summer too, Christmas must be a different experience. I finally found an apartment after looking at some tight situations. Apparently there are a lot of people who rent 2 bedroom apartments and then sublet them to travellers, cramming 4 bunk-beds per room and charging about $600/month/person for short terms. I almost settled on one of those situations with 4 Brazilians and 2 British guys in a 2 bedroom place when a friend of a friend said he was moving to the UK and I could take his bedroom. It has ... read more

Hey guys! So I returned to Sydney, missed the place too much...and it missed me of course! Got my old job back and now I'm living with the fabulous Gracelands gang again! My time away just keeps getting better and better as I meet more class people, and I'm having so much fun! Must mention the fabulous Brigid and Lily, my roommates (Room 2 is the place to be!). Having some great times with these girls and the guys aswell - Jonny, Craig, Dave and Martin! Who knew a nite infront of the tv could be so much fun...well with this lot it actually is! So wot have I done since I've been back.....been topping up the tan at the beach, which is now fading a little due to working too much for my liking - ... read more

So I'm a 26 yr 'old' from Sydney, Australia and this is my blog for the trip I've been thinking about ever since I first heard the travel stories of my parents as an impressionable 8 yr old. I remember sitting there as a wide-eyed youngster listening to how my father had travelled the globe, going from what sounded like adventure to adventure. Stories about waking up surrounded by turkish troops on Cyprus, wedding dresses in Bucharest, living on a kibutz in Israel, these are all fertile ground for a young imagination. Eventually my father found a less nomadic form of adventure in the shape of my mother in Australia in the mid 70's. At the time my parents met, my mother was on a travelling adventure of her own, she had decided in the free ... read more
