6th January – 13th February 2011 We arrived into Cairns airport late at night and headed straight to Port Douglas where we checked into the Parrotfish Lodge Hostel – not one of the better ones we’ve stayed in. Fortunately, Helen and David were staying at the Peninsula Boutique Hotel which had a lovely big pool area and overlooked the beach so much of our time was spent there. Port Douglas is both very hot and very relaxing so the main thing to do is to bask in the tropical pacific ocean and cool off in the pool so many of our days were spent doing just that!! There were however, two action packed days, the first of which was a day of snorkelling at the Great Barrier Reef. We ventured out on a boat, with a ... read more

Hello everyone! Merry Christmas and hope you all had a lovely new year. We certainly did, it was great to have Mum, Dad and Ratty with us but now they have continued their travels and we are off to watch the ashes and travel the east coast. Our tour of OZ started in Melbourne. It was a manic week but fantastic to be back in the 'western world!' What with being able to cross the road without taking your life in your hands, eat something other than noodles and rice - mainly pie! Have a hot shower and a proper flush on the toilets! We settled in quickly to Melbourne life, it was lovely to catch up with old friends - great to see you Caitlin and Emmie! We had a lovely wander around Melbourne and ... read more

... read more

Alice Springs - Sydney This would be our first of two visits to Sydney on this trip, Michelle had managed to talk Abby (an old school friend now living in Sydney) into allowing us to stay in her flat whist she was in turn visiting the UK. This would be perfect since Sydney would be home for the next two weeks over Christmas and New Year and we wanted a bit more space away from the hostel scene. We got to the flat and were immediately greeted by Jahne (a very pretentious IT girl wannabe who is also Abby’s house mate, you can probably tell she doesn’t become our favourite person). I couldn’t get her name right to begin with, calling her Jarney and Johny but then I got it when she said “Jahne, like Parmajahne”, ... read more

Z „nowych” zwierząt widzieliśmy dziś rudą pandę (słodziak!), lemury (podobno twórcy filmu „Madaga... read more

Afternoon everyone, Yet again this blog has taken a while coming to you as we have been busy busy! To everyone who is doing exams etc....keep going it will all be over soon! Maybe you won't want to read this blog though :) So our last blog was from the Cameron Highlands in Malaysia. It was so pretty and we ate a lot of scones and went to the tea plantations and generally relaxed. Did A LOT of laundrey there and they shrank it all....annoying but an excuse to buy some more clothes. We met up with the guys in Kuala Lumpar and were there until the 29th April. It was so good to be back in a big city (we are such city kids, get withdrawals if we are away from shops and bars for ... read more

After a long few months without any contact or posts I decided it’s about time that I started posting things more often as we are finally starting to get moving on our travels once more. So, what have we been doing since our last post? Well during our last few days in Sydney it was all go! For our last few weeks we moved out of 773 South Dowling Street into 499 South Dowling Street!! An amazing far move I know, and trust me carrying everything you own on our backs it certainly felt like a long move. In the last few days at Sydney I said goodbye to Strictly Aquariums and Kate said goodbye to her job at Cossies (Cafe)¬. Katie and David disappeared down the coast for a week staying at our new landlords ... read more

He finally got his wish. Even when I told him where I was going to spend the better part of the month, he found a way to inject an element of trepidation into my veins as though it might force me to reconsider. In years past, conversations between us with something to the effect of: “Why won’t you consider it? It’s a big place, lots to do, and the folks are very friendly.” My father would then squint in anticipation of the answers he knew were coming and did not want to hear. “No, Dad, there’s just no challenge. There’s no edge.” If he was trying to direct me back into Western Europe, I had an easy out. A summer or significant portion thereof in Europe would destroy my budget in a matter of weeks.
