DAY 380 It’s Sunday today, but as usual everyone is up and out on harvest duty somewhere on these 6000 acres. I start my day with stripping the bed linen, I see in the laundry that Helen has done the same thing so as she has a huge top loader washing machine I put the whole lot in together. While the washing machine does its thing I have some breakfast. By the time I have finished breakfast, the bed linen is done, so I hang that on the line and put all the towels in, I know, you are thinking how exciting my day is going to be! Rain is promised today, really it is, so for a brief spell we actually get some, it hurls down for a few minutes and then stops, Helen seemed ... read more

DAY 379 This morning I woke up tired, we have been putting some hard yakka in on the farm, but this is farm life, this is harvest time, it has to be done, however tired everyone is it still goes on. I have a quick cup of tea and Helen and I head off, me in the fire truck and Helen towing the fuel bowser. The header has been working all night, we pass Jason who is going home for some rest, we arrive at the paddock where it had been parked, it is covered and needs to be prepped for the next round. Fuelled up, greased, filters blown out with the compressor, and the whole of the harvester cleaned down as it accumulates so much chaff and dust it is potentially a fire starter on ... read more

DAY 378 I could not believe my eyes getting back to the house last night (or should I say this morning), the ceiling over the veranda was covered in flies, they were swarming over our empty Esky which was sitting outside, fortunately they only seem to come to the front of the house and not the back, I don’t know why, maybe it is cooler around the back? I slept in until 8.00, got up and had breakfast, Andy and Helen were nowhere to be seen, I knew that Josh would still be sleeping so I kept as quiet as possible, I heard him come in somewhere around 4.00am after spending most of the night harvesting (& helping to fix the tractor with the battery problem). This morning I can see where the flies had come ... read more

DAY 375 Andy brought me a cup of tea this morning, it is 7.00, I wanted to be up in good time as I am going to Wagga Wagga today with Helen to do a bit of shopping, Helen has a 9.00 appointment in town so we need to be leaving Woodstock by 8.15 in order to get there in time. I am up and about, chat to Andy about yesterdays fire, he is enjoying a short time of peace and quiet, i.e. everyone is out and about doing sheep things so Andy is surplus to requirements at the moment, by 8.00 however Jason appears at the door, so it is time to go. Jason and Robert appear and Robert asks if I want to go with Jason and Andy, also that Helen is still too ... read more

DAY 374 It was already daylight but Andy was still asleep, I checked my watch it was about 6.00 but not long after Andy was up and in the shower. He was long gone by the time I got up, I slept straight through until 7.45, I have no idea why, but I seem to sleep so much here at Woodstock. I wandered into the kitchen it was completely void of people, the radio was talking, everyone had things to do and had much earlier left to get on with their day. I put the kettle on and made a cup of tea and got some toast on the go. I went out to our truck and started to get some bits and pieces out that needed dealing with, such as another big pile of washing, ... read more

Waking up this morning, I felt very thirsty, then remembering the reason why, we had polished off a few bottles of bubbly last night to welcome Susan back to the Woodstock homestead. Fortunately I had taken a glass of water to bed with me last night to quench my thirst. Andy of course was already up, no doubt tippy tappying on the laptop writing up the blog for yesterday, which of course I will be editing and adding my five penneth worth before publishing. Before getting out of bed I reflected on yesterdays journey, no cup of tea was forthcoming from he who normally brings one to me either, so feeling thirsty thought I had better get up and see what the day has to offer. No doubt a quieter day today, a few things to ... read more

Day 99 The last thing I remember Helen saying last night is that she wanted to have a little lie in on Saturday morning, as there were no sheep to feed. I was out of bed at 7.00am and wandered in to the kitchen, Robert and Helen were both there, and Helen had said she had woken up at 4.00am and had not been able to get back to sleep and was shattered. We sat around a little and had tea; Robert asked if I would let the dogs off, which ones should I let off? Oh, Toby, Wally and Trixie, but leave Kimba and Tiny in their huge pen, and Jack was still on his cushion feigning it on the veranda. Helen asked if she could use one of the Toyota’s to take some stuff ... read more

This is a confession that has not happened many times in my life. (I over slept) Yes it true, I didn't wake until 7.15 and I was supposed to be feeding the sheep this morning, and my planed rendezvous was 6.00 am in the kitchen. Sh*t! I wandered through to the kitchen mortified by my misdemeanour, to find it empty, Helen’s coffee cup was there half empty. If I wasn’t doing the sheep then I knew it would be Helen helping Robert, Sh*t!! I made myself tea, and stewed in my own juices of guilt, whilst Caroline got up and came in to the kitchen. I explained my disgrace and in a typical Caroline retort said, “Well you obviously needed the sleep”. Helen came back at 9.00 and walked in to the kitchen “Morning” she said, ... read more

Day 97 Just after getting into bed last night I heard a noise, I am paranoid about snakes so I am wondering what is in the bedroom, apart from Andy that is, the wind was blowing the blinds against the window frame, I was comfortable with that noise, what I wasn’t comfortable with was the noise of things moving on the nearby bookshelf. Flicking on the torch and scanning the area I could see nothing “I must be imagining things”, there is nothing there. Switching off the torch I lay back down to go to sleep. A few minutes later another noise alerts me as I heard a rustling of the papers that I have in my bag next to the dressing table, laying still I listen hard then hear a scratching noise on the door. ... read more

Day 96 I woke at 5.45am brilliant I thought, I’ll just have 5 minutes and get up, I re awoke at 6.25 in a panic, I’m late, Robert and myself were off to feed sheep at 6.30. Robert had had a late night and had slept in himself; I was first up, soon followed by Helen and Robert, but no Caroline. Robert asked if I could let Trixie and Wally off today, I went over to their side of the paddock, when they see me they go absolutely mental, so excited they bark and jump around on their chains. I go straight to Jack seeing how he is today and he definitely looks brighter, then everyone has the same amount of fuss. Wally is always so professional in a doggy sort of way; he just cannot ... read more
