Down to Business
Andy and Robert joint a pipe. This is a confession that has not happened many times in my life. (I over slept) Yes it true, I didn't wake until 7.15 and I was supposed to be feeding the sheep this morning, and my planed rendezvous was 6.00 am in the kitchen. Sh*t!
I wandered through to the kitchen mortified by my misdemeanour, to find it empty, Helen’s coffee cup was there half empty. If I wasn’t doing the sheep then I knew it would be Helen helping Robert, Sh*t!!
I made myself tea, and stewed in my own juices of guilt, whilst Caroline got up and came in to the kitchen. I explained my disgrace and in a typical Caroline retort said, “Well you obviously needed the sleep”.
Helen came back at 9.00 and walked in to the kitchen “Morning” she said, I cringed with embarrassment, and apologise profusely. Helen said Robert was loading up and will be over when he has loaded so that I can jump in the truck and take over.
Robert came over, I jumped in and off we went to feed the next mob of sheep up at Hazeldene.
Getting back at lunchtime and go in to
Attaching
Here Andy and Robert attach the probe pipe the Kitchen for our dinner, which is always a nice event.
After lunch we have one more bail to load on the ute, then we get back to finish the sheep feed.
Our afternoon session, comprised of finding how much water was present in one of the bores, where water can be pumped from. We had loaded a generator and went up to the paddock, by the large dam and the boom irrigator, and found the bore. The depth is 28 mtrs and about 300mm in Diameter. The cylindrical pump feeds out with a 63mm poly pipe. We had had to weld some lifting eyes to the top of the plate, as it was really heavy when it had to be pulled out of the bore. Robert and Jason had constructed the “Wheel” that the pipe work is pulled over as it has to be roped or chained to the hitch of the Toyota and pulled up.
Caroline had come with us to take some photographs and instead of taking some excellent engineering photo’s she wandered off and took pictures of the dam etc. (C: I get bored easily).
Robert and myself had had to install
Probe Pipe
Robert and Andy now joint the probe pipe. a separate tube for the sensor probe, as the fairly delicate probe had got stuck earlier so we had to come up with a better plan.
When we lowered it all back down the bore, the generator was connected up and fired up and water was started to pump out. In essence water is being pumped out faster than it can naturally be replenished. We did an easy experiment, where we filled a 45 gallon drum, Caroline timed it, 45 Seconds it took to fill, whilst the bore was timed to replenish itself at 1 meter every 18 seconds.
Jack looked exceptionally bored and very tired, we think he has overdone it for the day; he could not make up his mind if to sit on the truck or get into the shelter from the wind. The wind was strong and the sun had disappeared it was getting cooler.
With the engineering works over it was time to head back to the homestead and get a well earned cup of tea and shower.
Tonight we are taking Helen and Robert out to thank them for their gracious hospitality. We have been very lucky to stay here
Many Hands
Make light work of the job and it has kept us out of the way of the Victoria fires, so we are truly grateful.
Tonight we go to the RSL (Returned Soldiers League), there are many of these in Australia where non members can also go for a good meal.
Tomorrow we finally move on to Canberra for a couple of days look around, we will stop by Woodstock on the way back as Helen and Roberts daughter Susan returns for a short spell from her travels. So we will catch up with Susan (although I am sure she will be jet lagged) and then head towards Melbourne.
We had a great meal; the RSL’s have a great menu and quite reasonable value. We choose an Semillon Sauvignon Blanc to wash down dinner with, naturally it has to be Australian.
On our return, all very weary it is bedtime.
