We got the overnight bus to Byron Bay from Newcastle. Byron has very nice beaches and loads of activities on offer. It has a slightly resort like feel but remains pleasant place to be. We stayed in a couple of YHA's here for almost a week. We spent most days surfing including a lesson on the first day. Standing up was easy enough in the lesson on their big soft-ish learner boards and quite a bit harder ( though still achievable ) on the 'real' boards we hired after. We also spent a day cycling and walking and a morning on a tour to go Kayaking with the local dolphins. Guess how many dolphins we saw ? None, not a single chuffing dolphin. "Oh, we've seen loads" everyone else we met kept telling us, "and whales ... read more

was tres sad to be leaving bribane :( still, new places are exciting so i got over it pretty quickly, lol. slept most of the way to byron bay, my first stop in new south wales! (i feel like i've been in queensland like, forever!!) how super exciting!!!!! everyone that i had met so far on my travels had totally raved about byron, so i think that i had high expectations of the place. unfortunately, these expectations were not met :( had a lovely time in byron, don't get me wrong. i just thought that i had been to much nicer, more exciting places. ah well!!! just goes to show you that different people like different things and it pays to go to places regardless of what other people say and draw your own conclusions :) ... read more

(Gem writes...) We are in Byron Bay at the moment, we have been here for two days. Before that we were in Brisbane for 2 nights which was just a time for r and r and to sort out and book activities for the next few weeks on the East coast. Anyway, this blog is all about the previous week before we arrived in Brisbane, we spent a week in the Red Centre experiencing the Outback. On the monday we flew from Adelaide to Alice Springs. We stayed at a hostel called Annie's Place and just spent the first day getting used to the heat and getting ready for our 3 day tour on the tuesday. We had a good look around Alice Springs, an interesting little town with a large aboriginal community, which you don't ... read more

Awoke early and Lucy was like "have you SEEN the restaurant that we've stopped at?" I had still been comatose when we pulled up so i confessed that I hadn't ... She then made me close my eyes until she'd led me outside and made me open them to see "the big PRAWN" that sits on top of the roadhouse. (Australia has a fascination with BIG THINGS, there's a big banana, a big pineapple, a BIG COFFEE POT... the list is endless). One day I will do a trip when i drive across the country with the mission of seeing all the BIG THINGS in person! Bet you can't wait for the travel blog from that trip. Our hostel in Byron was really nice and we met some cool girls in the dorm - 2 medical ... read more

Just back from a great 2 day trip to Byron Bay. We set off early on Saturday morning from Brisvegas and arrived in Byron in less that 2 hours which was a bit quicker than I thought. It was straight up to the top of the hill at the end of the town to the famous lighthouse. The lighthouse is located on a headland that juts out from the cost to make it the most Easterly point in Australia. Such a location called for a picture surely………which is when Ruth realised that although she had brought the camera, she had forgotten the memory card!!! Therefore the pictures here are ones that I have 'borrowed' from fellow travellers ! From the lofty position of the headland we spotted humpback whales out to sea, and also a group ... read more

After last night's fun festival (like fine backpackers we stood in the car park and listened to some of the bands for free whilst avoiding security) we went for a long walk today along "Clark's Beach" to Cape Byron and up to the lighthouse and most-easterly point of mainland Australia. From there, it is said that around this time of year you can see migrating humpback whales, on their way to Queensland from Antarctica...AND WE DID! TWO OF THEM!! and some dolphins and two turtles. Hopefully we'll be able to post a photo here (which is the real reason for writing this entry). ... read more

We been in chilled-out Byron Bay since Thursday enjoying the hot weather (we're nearly in Queensland), fantastic beaches and rediscovering Mexican food. The most amazing thing happened yesterday (Saturday). There's a rock festival on this weekend (it sold out months ago so we couldn't get tickets) called "Splendour in the grass" but everyone else was there so we were on a pretty much deserted beach all day. As the sun started to go down we set off up the beach for a walk (spotting skinny-dipping nudists along the way but that's a different story) and then... Tim: "Look who that is" Emma: "Oh my god" Tim: "It's not is it?" Emma: "Oh my god" Tim: "No it'll just be some random Aussie guy" Emma: "Oh my god" Tim: "Go and ask him" Emma: "Oh my god" ... read more

I am leaving Brisbane on the last sunny day that week, clouds are already gathering up there in the sky. I get a lift with a Dutch guy, direct ride to Byron Bay, back to the state of New South Wales. My mood is not exactly the best when I check into the hostel and I am also a bit tired. There is no one in the room so I decide to get some nice wine and take an afternoon nap. I was just going for the second part of the plan when Heather from Canada walked into the dorm room. She just came back from an (unsuccessful) surf lesson and was going for a walk to the one natural attraction of Byron - the park by the coast and the lighthouse. She invited me to ... read more

Well moved on from Sydney leaving Tom, Jo and Adam behind and took an over night bus to Byron bay. My god overnight buses are hard to sleep in.... don't actually think got much sleep at all. The beach here is wicked and getting a tan finally! Sea is really warm... not gonna do surfing cause know i'll be bad at it. Diving is my next mission but that'll prob wait till get to Brisbane. Byron is a little town all about surfing, sunbathing and teenagers pulling everybody. Seriously its a meat market here full of 18/19 year olds who have too many hormones and therefore the night life suits.... they had stripping competition on the bar last night, tacky to say the least. Besides them you have your surfers who love themselves too much, beach ... read more

Yoga by the beach A walk to Lighthouse lookout Nice, beautiful day. Sure was so nice to wake up and see the sun shining again especially after seeing it just piss down yesterday evening. I decided to get up at a decent hour, have some breakfast and then go to a yoga class by the beach this morning. It turned out to be really great to be able to stretch out, hear the waves and really relax. The "cool down" at the end was super relaxing...I swear I fell asleep. :) After a few nibblies for lunch I decided I should take a walk to the lighthouse and then perhaps sit on the beach for part of the afternoon. The walk to the lighthouse and walking track loop was awesome. The sun was shining and the ... read more
