Blue Mountains and Sydney Harbour Swim, 12th-14th March The weekend of the 12th - 13th marked with the arrival of Avril and Brian (Bowks’s parents) who had flown over to visit and see some of the sights Australia had to offer. We picked them up from the airport on Friday evening and spent the evening chatting about travels. Saturday morning we were early to rise to head t the Blue Mountains, known as the Great Dividing Range, an hour and a half west of Sydney. The Blue Mountains gets its name from the blue haze that lifts from the eucalyptus trees that grow in mass and cover the mountain range. We first drove to see the Wentworth waterfalls where we did several walks giving us fantastic views of the falls and vast expanse of the Blue ... read more

Our Blue Mountains tour started bright and early with us having to get to the local pick-up point for 7:20am...I know, very early! We’d been told that it was a fun tour (Happy tours) as the brothers who run it were born and raised in the Blue Mountains themselves, knew it like the back of their hands and had good senses of humour. Well after a bit of confusion over who was on the tour and who was not, (there were lots of pick-ups for different tour companies at the same place and time, we set off on our journey to the beautiful Blue Mountains. We had been talking about the tour to a few people in our hostel the night before who said they’d been on it, (different tour company) but that they had a ... read more

Well, this is it. Our final stretch in Australia. We are leaving Myall Lakes for Sydney. For once it didn’t rain during the night and it was nice and sunny when we got up. The benefit of this is that the tent and the ground sheet were dry for the 1st time whilst we packed them away. This was a good thing as we won’t be using them again for about 3 weeks until we get to Christchurch at the end of February. The drive from Myall Lakes to Sydney was pleasant enough until we got into Sydney proper. We were merrily driving along looking at the scenery when all of a sudden the road we were on turned into a toll road going over the Sydney Harbour bridge. Now this at first wouldn’t seem like ... read more

After jumping on a direct train to the Blue Mountains, we met Penny who again whisked us away and treated us to our first caving adventure. Once the guides had us all dressed up as the Mario brothers (refer to the photos) they decided that we should abseil down into the cave. This was a great idea, aside from the fact that when I told them I had abseiled before I was referring to the taster course I did when I was about 10. So after shakily making it down we progressed down into the cave, where we were told about the history of the caves; where Victorians went caving in full evening dress. We scraped our bodies through some of the tiniest nooks and crannies I have ever seen, saw crystals glinting on the stalactites ... read more

Where we stayed From Sydney Guy, Hev, Kate, Rich and myself travelled on the train to meet with Guy's family friends who were putting us up for the next three nights. There house was massive and pefectly situated in a small town called Glenbrooke (within the Australian bush). They had a swimming pool and tennis court which we obviously made the most of. The family we were staying with were very welcoming. We stayed directly with Grant and Jas, with Jeff, Wendy, Laura and Bonnie the dog living on another floor of the house. Hillsong Pretty much as soon as we arrived Grant and Jas were heading off to church, reluctant at first we decided to join them. It turned out to be pretty cool, it was the original Hillsong church, I had been to one ... read more

Well the Blue mountains really took me by surprise, it was not like I remembered at all. We set off, Mum, Col, Deb and I early on Monday the 18th, we headed to the Zig Zag Railway near Lithgow. We relaxed on the short train journey, taking in the views and enjoying the old train carriages. In the afternoon we headed towards Katoomba where we stayed. We stopped by at the old Hartley village, only a few buildings in the street really, it was good to see how the old houses would have looked here as the early settlers came out. As we headed through Mt Victoria we stopped at Sunset Rock lookout for our first glimpse of the vast valleys, in Mt Victoria we went to an old museum at the railway station that had ... read more

The Indian Myna is an introduced bird in Australia that is becoming a bigger pest year by year. they are referred to by many as "rats with wings". They muscle in on our native birds territory and start destroying their nests and pushing them out of the area. They adapt really well in urban and semi urban areas. We had absolutely no Indian Mynas in our area until about 3 years ago and then boom - their numbers have exploded. So, it is now time to fight back! Our local council has been running workshops on how to build traps and then eradicate them from the area. The council are encouraging as many people as possible to get involved. Lorenza and our mate Paul attended a workshop today at the council works depot to see how ... read more
