Left home at 9.30am on a beautiful, warm sunny day and made our way towards the Blue Mountains. Stopped at Leura for lunch and nearly died of cold. It was only 5ºC. Couldn’t believe it! Despite the chill in the air, we pulled in to Katoomba to view the magnificent Three Sisters. The sun was shining and the view as clear as crystal. Quite an awesome sight. Having bought a warm scarf and some gloves, we rushed back to the car for warmth. We arrived at McKeowans Rest at Jenolan welcomed by hosts Brian and Sandra with a delicious roast lamb dinner. This is a five start B & B which we highly recommend to anyone considering a quiet retreat where they will be completely spoilt by the view, the venue and the service.. ... read more

Today was a wonderful example of how travel, friendship, having an open door, plus those convoluted six degrees of separation connections can bring so many delights into a single day. Our new friend Chung, who is connected to us via a friend in Hanoi who knows a close friend of Chung's, is currently studying in Sydney. After some meetings in the inner city of Sydney for lunch on a few occasions, Chung came to visit our house. She was also accompanied by four of her friends (Chau, Ha, Linh and Ly) all of whom are either working or studying on a short term basis in Sydney. Not only did they come to visit, they also came to cook. They took the 1.5 hour train trip to our area, laden with fresh ingredients and some great plans ... read more

On Saturday morning five of us (Me, Kim and her friends Al, Jimmy, & Nikki) drove off for the Blue Mountains west of Sydney, about 3 hours from Wollongong. What would a trip be without a little adventure? We made it to Mount York to do some climbing and got all our gear out and ready. I was belaying Al on a route and Jimmy started another climb before we heard a large crash. Unfortunately, Jimmy had taken a ground fall trying to clip in his rope while lead climbing. He fell about 4 m and landed hard on a rock. I should say now that rock climbing is like any sport...not dangerous, but accidents do happen. Just to be cautious we decided he shouldn't walk out and called in an ambulance. Since it was pretty ... read more

... read more

Rickety old tram, massive caves and more Devonshire scones!! We were up pretty early to catch our train to the Blue Mountains, especially as I think we were both checking the alarm was still on but mostly because we were 4 floors up in one of the busiest streets in Sydney. So you should know what an early morning means to us by now - that’s it McDonalds, except MacDonald’s wasn’t at the station, it was Hungry Jacks aka Burger King. This however didn’t stop Nath making it obvious he was cheating on them with another food outlet as he asked for a “Mac” muffin!! (Force of habit, I think.) We didn’t wait long for the train which was good as we were still pretty tired, so we found a place to drag our bags onto ... read more

The Blue Mountains is a mountainous region in New South Wales, Australia. It borders on Sydney's metropolitan area, its foothills starting approximately 50 kilometres west of the state capital. Consisting mainly of a sandstone plateau, the area is dissected by gorges up to 760 metres deep. The highest point of the range is 1,190 metres above sea level. A large part of the Blue Mountains is incorporated into the Greater Blue Mountains Area World Heritage Site, consisting of seven national park areas and a conservation reserve. The Aboriginal dream-time legend has it that three sisters, 'Meehni', 'Wimlah' and Gunnedoo' lived in the Jamison Valley as members of the Katoomba tribe. These beautiful young ladies had fallen in love with three brothers from the Nepean tribe, yet tribal law forbade them to marry. The brothers were not ... read more

The Blue Mountains are one of the bigger draws in the Sydney area. That said, with the highest peak at 1,190 m, they really are more like Blue Hills. Australia is somewhat outgunned in the mountain department by other countries we have seen. Still, Australia's Blue Mountains are picturesque and they are only less than 2 hours drive west of Sydney. We headed into the mountains in our rental car on the afternoon of Monday, April 12th. We startled dozens of kangeroos as we arrived at the grassy Glenbrook campsite, just past the village of Hope. There were enough 'roos around that I couldn't help wondering whether they had ever initiated unpleasant incidents with people. In a man vs. kangaroo fist fight, I bet the 'roos would win, but much of it would depend on the ... read more

I was hoping it would be second time lucky when I went to collect my hire car. And it was, so Alex and I drove Zak (a Hyundai Getz in a very fetching shade of blue) out of Sydney city centre (out first turn was, of course, wrong) via Harbour Bridge - which is actually the country's busiest road. Alex's chronic inability to read maps blew us slightly off course (joking Honky... it wasn't all your fault), but we eventually found our way north to the koala centre at Pennant Hills. Alex wanted to see some Australian critters, and I wanted to see some koalas. The koala centre is actually home to far more than koalas... it houses wombats, cockatoos, echidnas, emus, cassowaries and all manner of kangaroos and wallabies - including their bastard child (?) ... read more
