Hi everyone - Lex and I are embarking on our cross country journey tomorrow starting in Jacksonville Beach, FL. We're leaving Alex's parents house tomorrow morning, and driving west on 1-10 to my parents house in Navarre, FL for Easter. After visiting with my parents, we will be driving west across either 1-40 or 1-10 (we haven't decided yet), stopping in Dallas to sleep and then on to Santa Fe and Taos, New Mexico. From there we will continue to California, driving up the coast and then up to San Francisco. After San Fran, we will drive east to Yosemite and then over on 1-70 to Colorado. Thankfully we are finally ready to leave, altho we've had our ups and downs over the past few weeks as we've been getting ready. It's going to be an ... read more

Traverse City and the immediate surrounding areas desires growth, but only if it is just the right amount. And what that right amount is depends on who you talk to. The developers are interested in expanding the areas around Traverse City so they can build large homes and minor commercial areas to support them. Many of these homes would be retirement (or second) homes. Another contingent wishes to expand Traverse City inasmuch as that growth would benefit tourism. Some recent proposals that have been approved make way for multi-story complexes within the city itself, which are as high as six stories. Between these two groups there is a good deal of tension. There is some hope that the blossoming wine industry (still small) in Michigan will develop into a kind of Napa Valley, whose ultimate ... read more

Commercial expansion is problematic in the area in and around Traverse City because it is hemmed in by the large bodies of water, notably Traverse Bay. In other words, an efficient grid system is not possible. The expansion of highway systems offer only temporary relief as they become congested as developers build houses around them, with the inevitable commercial support for them following. It is unlikely that freeways will see the light of day as they would necessitate the condemning of alot of scenic land which might alter the image too dramatically of this tourist town. The only idea afloat is to create some sort of bypass around the city. However, traffic study patterns have shown that this idea would not reduce the traffic in town, nor speed up commutes. So for now the highways ... read more

After arriving in Tulum at 11am, we checked in at the Hotel El Crucero, grabbed a bite to eat before taking a stroll down the road to the Tulum Ruins, which, though lacking the grandeur of Teotihuacan, Mont Alban and Palenque, still made for an awesome sight. The ruins are set on cliff tops overlooking vast stretches of palm fringed beaches and a bright turquoise Caribbean Sea. Their simple and small scale design is a reflection of the fact that they were built by a Mayan civilization in decline, around A.D. 1200 -1500 and it is thought to be one of the last Mayan cities to have been abandoned. The remaining temples and ruins are surrounded by a 2m thick, 3.5m high wall which protected the city during a time of considerable strife. We wandered ... read more

After leaving San Miguel we headed up to Guanajuato (GJ) where the countryside is dry and desert like. We are in the north central highlands now and although the sun is as bright and intense as at the lower elevations the air is noticeably cooler. GJ is at 2017 meters, higher then Denver. This town of 78 thousand souls is stuffed into a ravine with steep sides with access roads leading into the terrain following the old mining tunnels constructed years ago. Coming into the city involves coming through these underground tunnels which are not well lit. Traffic in the city is one way with the return trip involving coming back through the tunnels. The net result is a town with very light traffic and a joy in which to walk. That is, except for ... read more

Easter Sunday was a special day. We got up for the Sunrise service at our church, Shepherd of the Hills. It was well attended, in fact, it was the largest gathering our church has had for the sunrise service. Pastor Eckert had a wonderful sermon about the words of Christ on Easter. We often hear the words of Christ on the Cross but not the words that Christ said to the people that came to the tomb on Sunday morning. The Angels words to Mary and others, He is Risen ,Do Not Be Afraid etc. IT was a beautiful service with the choir and harpist. In the after noon we were invited to the Ekstrands, where we had a wonderful meal and fellowship. It was truly a wonderful day of celebration on a beautiful day ... read more

Left Oaxaca on Easter Sunday to cross the mountains to the east by bus and it was an incredible ride on an economical bus - not the school bus second class but the ones without TV and that stop many places and that dont have a bathroom and let vendors on to sell food like tamales and tacos and nuts and cheese (and on other rides icecream and juices etc). It was also one of those rides that took 6 hours to go less than 200km - twisty turvy 2 lane mountainous road - hwy 175 - barely 250 straight metres until the end. Leaving Oaxaca the climate is still dry - leafless bushes and nopales (or prickly pears) - an must admit I dont like the scenery when they dominate (though they are tasty - ... read more
