** Please note that this blog is a publicly-accessible forum. As such, it can be read by anyone, so out of respect for my employer, I will not mention the company name in any entry. If you post a remark or comment, please be kind enough to do the same! Thank you! ** After hanging out in my hotel room for a few minutes, I decided to find our facility on the south side of Chicago (the baddest part of town). I printed directions from Mappoint.com a few day s before, so I took my trusty map with turn-by-turn directions and headed out. And that was the highlight. Let me explain something about Chicago. If you’ve seen Boston, you know exactly what Chi-Town looks like. More specifically, if you’ve ever been through Roxbury or Dorchester, you ... read more

OD Easter Sunday we relaxed, did some food shopping and put all our photos on a CD for mailing. Went to the movie "Wild Hogs" and spent the evening laughing hard. This morning we went looking for some extra gear for the cold weather still to come. The selection here is slim and could not get CC her stuff. We came up with a plan, Internet, phone and plastic LL Bean solved our problem. Tomorrow CC's stuff will arrive by overnight shippment and we will be back on the trail in the afternoon. We have replaced her coat system and got both of us liner bags for our sleeping bags. I called "The Dog Nanny", a Trail Angel down the trail a ways and started coordinating future events. Things are looking much better for weather ... read more

Yes - I've been poor at updating the blog since Oz but who cares? We've been too busy having a great time! However, the end is in sight and thanks to Emily it's now easier to get online and add some info and photos. We'll try and get it up to date ASAP, but will add more photos to the entries at a later stage. Hope everyone is well and we'll be back soon!!! (BOO HOO!)... read more

In the mall, I saw a souvenir shop of T-shirts that had these on: "Be good to me. I have friends in Detroit." "I'm tough. I vacationed in Detroit." These struck me. What's with Detroit? ... ummm, aside from the fact that Eminem is a Detroit native. Well, a city of angst? Stevie Wonder also came from Detroit, but he's classy. Detroit must be a city full of variety and history. So here goes my impression of Downtown Detroit, plus a thrilling experience while walking downtown. Read on. GM Renaissance Center The General Motors Renaissance Center (also known as RenCen) is the most prominent structure along Jefferson Avenue downtown. It is always the cityscape backdrop in the news especially on the Fox Weather Report that I tune into every morning. I mentioned before that my ... read more

Mariachi is the only past time around here, musicians take pride in getting dressed up to sing Mexican folk songs anywhere, for anyone willing to listen this includes the younger kids that hold a great respect for their elders and also sing along from their open hearts alongside them, this can go on for a good hour or so, playful teens handed over a $500 note which is around $50 USD to hear them play their best tunes, this kind of respect is so endearing. This originates from the strong family unit that I see all around me here, family life means eating together and listening to music which is so important to the people of Mexico and it has been great for me to experience, especially coming from a country where no one eats around ... read more

Hellllooo EVeryone! Happy Easter!! YAY!! We have lots to report- currently we are staying with the gracious Bautch family (Tom, Jan, Kara, and Cullen ) on the west coast here in lovely San DIego, CA. The weather is apparently dismal for this area but we have also found it's probably the warmest place in the country right now ( Holla! ) So if you need a little heat, we'll try to send some ya'll's way! New Mexico is called "the land of enchantment" and it wasn't long before I found out for myself! Driving through on HWY 10, suddenly this 'sparkly' feeling came over me and I was like "Ahh, Caleb!" and he said "Nici, you're just enchanted." So I got enchanted in New Mexico. We had a perfectly wonderful couple days with Art and ... read more

Due to Travelblog.org's memory failure, this article had to be re-published. I rose from my evening’s indulgence. Pushing pause, I passed through the dark room, glowing with a crystal glare, and entered the kitchen. Flicking on the lights, white recessed cans struck their yellow casts onto shadows with a soft incandescence, like a candle on a corner bookshelf. I reached the pantry, opened its wooden doors and pulled down two contents. One was a can of Equal Exchange Organic Hot Cocoa. The other was a plastic bag of Western Family Marshmallows—jumbo. Outside, a layer of clouds blocked the night sky. A sheet of rain fell and piddled on the patio. As the teakettle came to a boil, whistling a harmonizing melody of the Swiss Alps as if a yodeler in search of his Lassie, I turned ... read more
