Lancaster, PA was our next destination. We stayed for two weeks and explored the farms, villages, and bounty that Lancaster has to offer. This area, sometimes called Pennsylvania Dutch country, is home to many Old Order Amish, Mennonite, and various related sects. Many of them still practice the old ways, farming with mule-drawn plows and driving horse-drawn buggies. Their lifestyle is plain but honest. They seem to be exceedingly good stewards of the land, and the countryside is dotted with large barns, silos, and one-room schoolhouses. There are quite a few obvious tourist attractions, including outlet shopping, musical theaters, and all-you-can-eat smorgasbords with attached gift shops. However, we preferred driving around the countryside, exploring the local farms, farmers markets, quilt shops and bakeries. Although the farmers markets were quite good, it was early in the ... read more

School Field Trip Time! We always take our kids to the Memorial Museum to look at the fossils. The Memorial Museum is free and located on the University of Texas campus. Its two grown jewels are the Quetzalcoatlus and the Onion Creek Mosasaur. Both are HUGE fossils of ancient dinosaurs. The Quezalcoatlus dominates the Great Hall as you walk in. It is suspended from the ceiling and you can imagine it swooping down to snatch your pets and children for a mid-afternoon snack. The wingspan of the pterosaur is HUGE. It was discovered in the Big Bend area of Texas. So I guess the old adage of everything being bigger in Texas is true. The Onion Creek Mosasaur was found here in the Austin area at Onion Creek. It looks like a cross between an alligator ... read more

Death Valley National Park comprises more than 3.3 million acres of spectacular desert scenery, rare desert wildlife, complex geology, undisturbed wilderness and sites of historical interest. Death Valley is unique because it contains the lowest, hottest, driest location in North America. Nearly 550 square miles of its area lie below sea level. Ecologically, its plants and animals are representative of the Mojave Desert. Death Valley is one of the hottest places on earth, attaining the second-highest temperature ever recorded, 134 degrees F. in 1913. It contains the lowest point in the western hemisphere -- 282 feet below sea level near Badwater -- as well as numerous high-rising mountain peaks, including Telescope Peak at over 11,000 feet. Death Valley was named by gold-seekers, some of whom died crossing the valley during the 1849 California gold rush. By ... read more

Hi ho hi ho it’s off to Alaska we go! But what to take and what to leave? We’ve read lots, visited websites, read other peoples blogs, talked to fellow campers who have made this trip and folks who have vacationed extensively in Alaska. Our trip south has helped prepare us for this longer trip. We’ve taken some items out of the RV that were never used. We’re taking along some things that we missed and some spare parts. This includes an appropriate size socket wrench for the RV tires (apparently not all wreckers are equipped with the right size). Books we’ve read or are currently reading that will be going with us: The Milepost, 2007 59th edition. Alaska. Authors Jim DuFresne, Aaron Spitzer. From the Lonely Planet series of travel books. Traveler’s Guide to Alaskan ... read more

The latest news... So I'm too lazy to look back and see what I wrote last, but I don't believe I mentioned that after finding the sublettor, Courtney, my current roommate, informed me that she was moving out. This, as I am sure you can imagine, increased the stress level considerably, and I was really worried for a bit. But, as it turns out, Courtney has decided to stay till August when I get back, and the sublettor, Sarah, will stay on in the fall--so my sublettor will be my new roomie! Yay!! I'm super excited as she seems very nice and also shares my love for the feline species (=^.^=) Hehe! She has a cat of her own who she'll be bringing into the apartment, so I'm sure there will be some kitty drama ... read more

We are still trying to figure out how to use this site. We want to be able to provide pictures of our adventure, so we are practicing how to add pictures to the site. Laura Leaves Tomorrow Laura heads off to Spain tomorrow. She will be updating from there. I will still be here for the next week and a half or so. Once we start our actual travels, our blogs will be more interesting. But like i said, right now we are trying to figure out how to work this... --Jen... read more

In my opinion, saying goodbye is the hardest part of life...especially when you say goodbye to someone that you know that you may never see again. I packed my bags last night, cleaned my small room that I had entered only 5 months ago, and looked at the space around me. It was just a room. Another person would move in, another girl would sit at that desk, leaning over her books during the early hours of the morning to cram for that last minute exam. Another person would jump onto and off of that bed and attempt to try to rearrange the furniture which is nearly impossible with the bulky wardrobe in the corner. And for as long as that apartment is standing, students will pass through the rooms, never knowing who was there before ... read more

I have decided that a travel blog is the way to go to keep everyone up to date on my adventures. I haven't actually gone anywhere yet but I decided to start my blog today. For those of you who don't know, here is the back story: I am going to Italy for 4 weeks. I will be taking a class through Loyola University in Rome for two weeks and then traveling throughout Italy for two more weeks. I have wanted to go to Italy for as long as I can remember and when this opportunity presented itself I jumped on it! I am leaving exactly one week from today! I am really excited, and a little nervous. I feel like I have a million things left to do, but I am getting ready slowly but ... read more
