Every journey has a dual nature. There’s the journey outwards, traveling to distant lands, encountering different cultures, making new friends and going to places that you’ve never been before. And then there’s the journey inwards, the inward itinerary that takes you to destinations within yourself, some of which may be familiar, and some of which may also be places you’ve never been before. It’s the mirroring of the outward and the inward journeys that makes traveling such a unique and rewarding experience. Though my trip won’t actually start for another six days, in many ways the journey began for me two years ago when I left work to begin studies in theology full time at St. Paul University in Ottawa. When my wife Guylaine found out that there would be internships as part of the ... read more

Made it through my first week at Laerdal!! I started my assignment by reading through the 2007 marketing plans for each of the product lines. Across the plans, there are some inconsistencies and gaps in the demographics information, so I'm doing research to fill in those gaps and create current, accurate demographic profiles of each of the target market segments. For example, I'm trying to find the number of hospitals (and the number of specific hospitals, i.e. acute care or pediatric), hospital ERs, EMS/Fire agencies, military bases and hospitals, American Heart Association and American Red Cross chapters, nursing homes, registered nurses, pediatricians, etc. It's not going too badly - I've been able to use a couple of databases of hospital and EMS demographics that Laerdal has purchased, and I found some figures online (but the online ... read more

Last you all heard was that I was homeless in Vancouver. Well I would like to inform you all that i'm off the streets and into an apartment pretty much right downtown Vancouver. I'm here with 4 other people I worked with in Lake Louise and so far we absolutely love it. It's a two bedroom apartment on the ground level so we have a nice patio. Our landlord also left us his big screen tv and we have internet and phone which is nice after 6 months of not having any of that. I have been job hunting with no luck yet but with all the job postings around i'm sure it won't be long. I have been getting to know the city lately (trying to feel like a local). It feels like we've ... read more

Last time we left you we were leaving the incredible Rockies and headed towards Whistler. We had to break the drive to Whistler up with a night in Kamloops and stayed in possibly the worst motel to date- but at least we bartered with all the Indian motel owners and got ourselves a deal, so we had to be happy with that part! More bad luck though… the Jeep was leaking coolant through a valve, so our drive to Whistler got delayed while we waited to have it fixed. Once we finally did get on the road we were stopped at a police barricade to have licenses and rego checked- at least I got to show someone my international license! We finally arrived at Whistler and were a little shell shocked to see the size ... read more

So its not been such a busy day today but an enjoyable one nevertheless. We have most of our travel details sorted now so we are off to Vegas Next week ans San Francisco at the end of the month. As for the rest of the day, I was hoping to use the pool again but no such luck. As iI was outside, you could see large grey clouds on the horizon and by the time I reache the roof terrace here I could hear the thunder in the distance. After the initial dissappointment of bad weather I decided it would be quite cool to watch a storm here because they're meant to be amazing. So we settled down outside but under shelter (Vicky, Mark, Aunty Linda and me) to watch the storm. It did actually ... read more

...where we stood in Utah, Colorado, Arizona and New Mexico all at the same time. We are also proud to have a dog who has done the same :). There's a lot of driving to do around here, so most of the other pictures are of rock formations and mountains we can see from the road. Also, in some of the pictures you can see the southernmost Rocky Mountains. We'll be entering the land of a million national parks next, so look forward to pictures from Mesa Verde, Arches National Park, Bryce Canyon, Zion National Park, The Grand Canyon, and anywhere else fellow campers recommend while we're on the road. Woohoo!! Also, we've planned out our trip afterwards, just to give you an idea of where we're heading. After the national parks we're going to ... read more

It´s been far too long since my last blog entry. But for once we´ve been quite busy... Our first stop in the USA was L.A. We spent a couple of nights in a hostel in Venice. Venice Beach is a fun place with crazy people everywhere. Moreover it isn´t as posh and superficial as many other places in L.A. After the long flight from Sydney to L.A. we suffered from Jetlag. It was quite a funny experience. We woke up in the middle of the night, couldn´t fall asleep and were hungry at weird times. Due to our jetlag and Philipp´s cold we didn´t do much the first couple of days. Once we felt better, we rented bikes and rode them along the Pacific Coast. We saw some dolphins while chilling on Santa Monica Pier ... read more

Secret of the blowhole North America » Canada » British Columbia » Vancouver Island By Sazzle DazzleMay 8th 2007 This was by far the best walk I have ever been on in my life! We were supposed to go fishing today however it was too windy so the boats weren't going out. Ron had already closed the cafe for 'Tibeten Easter' so rather than wasting a day we went to the Blow Hole. This is a secret location just outside of Ucluelet which only the locals know about so it was an absolute honor to have been taken there in Ron's dented truck! All three of us squeezed in and pulled up along what ... read more

Morning light lit up half the rock opposite. Up at 5.30am. Eggy bread for breakfast. Stopped at mile 20.5 to walk up North Canyon, a narrow water-worn hole. Walked through a pool at the top to get a bit higher. Georgie Rapid was a major play spot for some - a bit too much for me at this stage in the trip. Only created by rocks in the last 10 years. Camp no 2 at 31.5 miles. No swimmers yet. After off loading and changing, went for a walk up to see some remnants of an Indain settlement, seeing some art on rocks, and a grain store up above. Saw our first "century plant" flower - the plant grows for 20 to 40 years, and then flowers with a very tall flower just once and ... read more
