" YOU HAVE NEVER SEEN SNOW?" "NO WE ARE JUST SUN LOVING AUSTRALIANS " "TAKE PITY ON US" In conversation with the family we are staying with they find out that my husband has never seen snow. The family astounded, took us up to the mountains that very night. These people are constantly going hiking, walking and their son did 'bouldering' (which is climbing around big boulders/rocks with no ropes "spiderman" style ) in the mountains in summer and skiing in winter - it was simply amazing to them that we don't get the same privledge. Even though it is the middle of summer and one of the hottest on record in years - every day around 35 degrees C or more, there was still snow in the mountains. Last winter had an unusally large amount ... read more

Day 6! I arrived in New York and after an eventful jaunt to the hostel (a homeless lady gave me a rude tongue lashing on the subway!) The hostel was located on the north end of central park and I was to have my own room. I would hate to share my room with 50 other people! But hostels aren't as bad as I thought they were going to be. I was able to make it the Museum of Natural History and the Planetarium. Both are a must on any list! There is plenty to see and do at these places. One can actually spend the whole day there and never get bored. Afterwards I went home and was in bed by 8pm. I didn't want to be out late alone and in a strange town. ... read more

It’s hot. The sun is at its zenith. It’s noon. A grandmother just drove by making an obscene gesture. Here we are, walking as a group of fourteen, northward along the Old Jackson Highway near Toledo, WA. We just received one of the many “one-fingered peace signs”. Granny was certainly lazy and forgot to bring up the other, so three of us responded, giving her the full symbol we walk for. A peace walk. We walk for peace some three hundred miles. We walk to educate ourselves about the nuclear issues across Washington State and beyond. We march to bring awareness to others and to remember the atomic bombs of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Their 60th anniversary nears as we walk for hope, with the prayers that acts of war will become a part of an ugly ... read more

This will be a short entry. The day was for the most part rainy and we had to make it all the way to Crescent City, CA for the weekend. The day started out cool and cloudy and we made our way to the Oregon Dunes Scenic Overlook. The Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area stretches for 40 miles from Florence to North Bend. The overlook is at the northern end between Florence & Reedsport. The Oregon dunes are the largest expanse of coastal dunes in North America. There was a National Forest Service ranger at the overlook and while talking to him, we found out that we could drive on the dunes in our SUV for a $10 fee. He showed us where to go, Winchester Bay, and we planned on driving out on the dunes ... read more

6/21/05 Megan and I started running today. I surprised myself at how much I was able to run without getting out of breath. Then I finished with crunches and sit-ups and remembered how out of shape I actually am. Oh well, it’s a start. Today went better with the kids and I actually started having some fun with the teaching. I realized the enjoyment comes once we start making the rehearsal process our own- incorporating ourselves into the directing rather than going strictly by the book. The week will continue to get better in that respect as we get more comfortable with the show and blocking and ourselves. Corry is an interesting city. I’m not exactly sure what to make of it. Megan describes PA as a southern state masquerading as a northeastern state. I think ... read more

Where it all started...not the trip, but where it all began for me, in Rochester, NY, more properly the nice town of Penfield where I was born and raised, and where my parents still live. Item of interest: this site has this kind of hierarchical database of places. I browsed into N. America United States New York, but couldn't find Rochester. I did however find the 'Luci and Desi Museum'. I'm happy to report that Rochester and the museum are now at the same level of importance in said database. Sherry and I are in the middle of the N. American leg of our world tour. She left her job as a labor and delivery nurse on 6/21. She closed things out on her last day with an unassisted birth (happens more than you ... read more

Well, we are still at home in North Dakota and Minnesota. I'm trying out this journal entry stuff to see how it works so bare with me. I hope everyone has time to check out our pictures, right now I just uploaded a few that I had in my camera to mess around with it, we will be removing them and putting in better ones next week when we are in Europe. Things have been crazy lately from copying everything from your passport to train tickets so that our parent's have a copy of everything. We are really looking forward to seeing everyone that can make it to Minneapolis this weekend, we are going to have a blast at Tuggs. We are staying at the Hilton downtown, we got our rooms for $60 dollars off priceline! ... read more

Everything is pulled together. Paul, my son called from Berlin very early this AM wondering if we'd left for London and informed me there had been a t. bombing in Central London! I've gotten this far, so how can I let this incident stop us? Today, I set about copying documents I've been collecting over the years. Our time in Paris and french countryside seems almost Da Vinci code-ish! Before we trek into the french countryside to explore an ancestoral village/s and possibly see if there is a shrine been built for a recently canonized family member (Augustus Schoeffler) I want to track down two paintings supposedly housed in an obscure museum in Paris of Augustus S-- "The Seminary Museum." There's even a Society involved....."Society Of Foreign Missions of Paris." We'll see.... (at least we aren't ... read more

The conversation as we are heading to arrivals at the Salt Lake City Airport goes like this... Me: "Did you send the family a photo of us?" Him: "No" Me: "hmmmm" Me: "Do you know what they look like?" Him: "No" Me: "hmmmm" Me:"How are the gonna find us? I hope they have a sign" Well we didn't have to worry about that one, coming down the escalators we see a lovely looking couple smiling at us. "You look just like your dad" They say to my husband. So after 30 years some people still have good memories..... Well you can't escape those genes unfortunately... (or in our case) fortunately - as we were easy to spot in the small crowd at the Airport. Maybe we just don't look American? Wonder if they said "Yeah... those ... read more
