Only one more day until we leave! Some quick hits from yesterday: WRAS FM is the Georgia State University student radio station. They broadcast at 100,000 watts, which is an enormous signal. The station is commercial-free, and they play great music. Today I listened in on a live set from The Willows. S.T.O.P. is Douglasville's answer to Kinkos. It's an independent copy shop somewhat in the spirit of Gnomen Copy in State College, PA, but only somewhat. Don't ask me how to pronounce S.T.O.P. -- is it "stop" or perhaps "ess tee ooh pee"? I'd put this question in the same category as how to pronounce ESRI, "ezz ree", "eee ess arr eye". Anyway, S.T.O.P. is within walking distance of the Douglas County county records building, and convenient for all your police report copying and faxing ... read more

I returned from Iguazu Falls into Buenos Aires and stayed at a friend's apartment for two nights...my last two in South America. The first day back was what the South Americans call "Friends Day". Apparently it's like Valentines day, except just for friends....which is kind of a cool idea. I think it might just be an excuse to have a party, but it's a registered holiday so I couldn't argue with that. I ended up going out with about 12 other Argentine friends and we went to a bar where they had rented out the top floor. We ate, drank and laughed and had a really fun time. It was a great way to spend my last night out in Buenos Aires. It also made me realize how much I would miss a lot of the ... read more

UPDATED WITH PHOTOS! Finally! THE LONG OVERDUE FINAL ENTRY OF OUR "SUMMER WORK ROAD TRIP" BLOG....PICTURES WILL FOLLOW AT SOME POINT....LOL......ENJOY!!! As the song goes, "We Love L.A."! LOL! We really do! With that said, April and I didn't have much time to enjoy it. Allow me to explain....On June 30th we had come to the conclusion to LEAVE scorching, scalding, sizzling hot Las Vegas and head HOME for the 4th Of July. We missed our family and pets and were experiencing heat stroke (I am sure of it)! For a brief moment we were going to drive home through Canada and bypass all the HEAT. After much talk we decided to head to the extremely cool (both figuratively and literally), Los Angeles. We were only 4 hours away and have always wanted to visit. The ... read more

After a virtually sleepless night for all (who puts safety lights shining directly into motel rooms???) most of the group got up and in the car at 5am to see the sunrise. God bless Bob, the only guy to join the group (he was up anyway according to him), who drove us over to the Yavapi outlook. We began our 1 mile journey and found our own spot where we didn't have to share it with anyone. Needless to say the view and the sunrise were amazing. We sat "perched" out on a rock. Bobby had the quote of the day..."Mom , I think you may be more nervous than Aunt Nancy!" Julie sat a few feet back from the crowd so she would enjoy the view and not have a anxiety attack! After breakfast we ... read more

There is only thing more painful than learning from experience, that is not learning.----Alex McGleish. July 28, 2005, Thursday. After leaving Denali we arrived in Fairbanks and picked up mail. This is an organization day. July 29, 2005, Friday. Today is the Artic Circle trip. We flew up in a Navajo Chief, a small plane that seats 10. At the start of our flight it appeared foggy, we later learned this was smoke from a burn in the forest. When lightning strikes in the wilderness of Alaska, it is allowed to burn itself out; unless of course, houses or villages are endangered. Last year 6 ½ MILLION acres of forest burned, it was the worst year on record. Lightning strikes are considered a natural occurrence and as such part of the ecosystem. We observed ... read more

Location: Jackson, KY Date: June 28th, 2005 I’m not sure if I’m adjusting quickly to this new life style of packing up and driving somewhere new every week, or if by leaving towns I’m leaving everything behind and my mind has yet to catch up and realize how crazy what I’m doing is. I’m not sure exactly what I was expecting my reaction to be, but it was definitely along the lines of weirdness and freaking out. But it still hasn’t completely hit me yet, or maybe I just adapt easily to new situations- who knows. The shows went well last week (in Cory, PA) I screwed up a few lines and songs but oh well. I also sweated up a river on stage what with the lack of AC and me in my huge bear ... read more

That's what I'm singing...just cos I don't have a physical house doesn't mean I'm not 'home.' Yep, back in the good ol US of A crashing with me darling sis til I get settled. I arrived this past Sunday, (after much deliberation on the Ireland end of things).... was quite sad to say goodbye to such good people and such a magical place. I'll have to drown myself in a pint of stout soon...if anyone cares to join me....? Follow it up by one of joy to celebrate the good people of PHILLY! I have to say I did miss the people here....although no matter where I go I keep 'ya all' with me anyway.... I'll probably still write on here every now and again....maybe when I travel into the northeast or south philly or something....tell ... read more

Here's to trying new things... Driving through some state, I'm lost track of which- they've all sort of become sort of a blur. State lines sneak up on us, and the "Welcome To:" signs have become as common as speed signs. A few weeks ago we drove to a nice town (Shepardstown) outside Hagerstown Maryland (So many "towns") we didn't realize we had crossed into West Virginia until sitting down in a tea shop which's menu read the current state. Strange feeling not know where you. We get confused a lot. But it's also exciting in a way- if we don't know where we are... then no one else really does either. On a turn-pike somewhere in PA, I made that realization that no one knew where Megan and I were at that moment. Random, but ... read more

Today's big adventure was to find Spring Green, WS, and the House on the Rock. I know there are many who have no clue what we are talking about, but even so, if you are ever within a five hour drive, you gotta see this thing! It is literally a house built on/in a rock formation in rural Wisconsin. So why is this so interesting??? Well, first off, it was constructed by a guy named Alex Jordan, who has no formal training in engineering architecture. He had a dream, and finally convinced the city to let him do it... once he proved of course that it would not fall down! There is a room that is literally constructed of three steel beams and glass (the floor is now plywood for people to walk on). It is ... read more

Wow. I am back in Albuquerque, New Mexico. I arrived back in the states one week ago today. And I got back to Albuquerque last Sunday. I'm still kind of in shock to be back. People had mentioned this to me... That there might be some culture shock upon returning--I didn't really think about it or believe that it would occur. But it is. So, I realized that I never fully explained what I was doing in Copan, Honduras. I guess it is a little late now, but I will try to explain. I am a student at UNM pursuing a BA in Anthropology and a minor in Latin American studies. Last year, I took a few art history classes on Pre-Columbian Art. My professor mentioned that she was looking for students to take to Copan ... read more
