Sherry, Jackie, and Debbie
Those are boiled peanuts, a southern speciality. Only one more day until we leave!
Some quick hits from yesterday:
WRAS FM is the Georgia State University student radio station. They broadcast at 100,000 watts, which is an enormous signal. The station is commercial-free, and they play great music. Today I listened in on a live set from The Willows.
S.T.O.P. is Douglasville's answer to Kinkos. It's an independent copy shop somewhat in the spirit of Gnomen Copy in State College, PA, but only somewhat. Don't ask me how to pronounce S.T.O.P. -- is it "stop" or perhaps "ess tee ooh pee"? I'd put this question in the same category as how to pronounce ESRI, "ezz ree", "eee ess arr eye". Anyway, S.T.O.P. is within walking distance of the Douglas County county records building, and convenient for all your police report copying and faxing needs.
Inside the store, a reporter from the Douglasville Sentinel was covering a story on the tax-free weekend that they have here once a year in GA. Check their
home page it's the lead story(!) and there's a photo of the S.T.O.P. cashier helping the woman directly in front of my in line. Anyway, the idea is that sales tax is waved
Sherry with Billy's Family
The Princes: Billy, Sharon, Jennifer, Savannah, Sherry, and Will the dog. for 3 days for 'back to school' items such as clothing, school supplies, and computers. $100 bucks off a new computer wouldn't be bad. I do feel the pain of the students around here. Starting school in early August kinda trims a few lazy weeks off the ol' summer vacation.
The Sentinel reporter was having trouble finding people to interview/photograph. My comment to him was, "Hey, why don't you do a story about why there aren't any Kinkos within 30 miles of here?". This turned a couple of heads behind the store counter, apparently 'Kinkos' is a bad word inside S.T.O.P.
So, I moved on to the
Yummy European Cafe. When running around doing errands in someone else's car, whilst leaching free lodging off someone else's relatives, and that someone else happens to be your girlfriend, its good practice to periodically volunteer one's self to pick up lunch...
...Blimpie = closed, Lenny's = not yet open, so the Yummy Cafe was my best bet. It turns out the proprietor and chef is a native of Sofia, Bulgaria and also an Australian citizen (Melbourne). The sandwiches were great.
Chef Yummy and I chatted about our upcoming trip, and he was of the opinion that we're not spending nearly enough time in Australia, and too much time in New Zealand... according to him, in NZ there's Auckland and all the rest is just 'bush'... I guess we'll see about that. Of course, I'm not one to speak about geographic blunders. I mispoke and put Bulgaria in the 'Baltics' not the 'Balkans'.... yeah, he picked right up on that.
The Flames Yesterday evening, we had a nice visit with Sherry's aunt and uncle Sharon and Billy and her cousins Jennifer and Savannah (see photo). Thanks for the pizza! (sorry no photo). Her cousins are pretty big sports fans, particularly hockey and the Atlanta Thrashers. I learned something from Jennifer. Did you know that the Calgary Flames of the NHL were originally based in Atlanta? More interestingly, did you know that their nickname is based on General Sherman's destructive burning of Atlanta in the latter stages of the Civil War?... well, now you do.
P.S. I also need to give a so-called 'shout out' to Sherry's Aunt Jackie, who wanted me to refer to her a my favorite Aunt Jackie. I said that this would be fine and truthful since I don't have an Aunt Jackie of my own. So, HELLO Aunt Jackie. Also, hello to Eddie who came out pretty well yesterday with approx. 2 GB of mp3s off Sherry's laptop, onto his iPod mini. Hope you enjoy the tunes man...
P.P.S. I have a woman at my credit card company that is my 'investigator'. I've spoken to her a few times about my stolen credit cards. Anyway, I've obviously never seen this person, but for some reason I have a vision in my head of her looking like Lenore Sokol. Lenore Sokol is an obscure Seinfeld character. She's George's government unemployment counselor in the episode where George is trying to extend his benefits. To this end, George goes on several dates with Lenore's less-than-attractive daughter, but eventually gets rejected by her. Desperate and noticing that Lenore is a big Mets baseball fan, George boasts that he knows Keith Hernandez and 'can produce him in her office in under an hour'... Classic episode.
