This morning there was frost for the first time! In the small towns on the way back to the Thruway, there are lots of hysterical, I mean historical markers. For example, there was one in LeRoy about the first Jell-O factory. The farms are clean and neat. We saw another pumpkin patch and overhead, a big flock of geese in a VEE, flying south. There is Wi-Fi in these service areas on the Thruway. We went inside for coffee and there were two strange looking lights that said EcoLab. They were like big white bowls hanging on the wall with blue light coming out the top towards the ceiling. We asked a worker what they were for. He said they were to trap and kill flies in the food court. The blue light was ultraviolet and ... read more

Arrived in Las Vegas, this place is huge. The casinos and hotels just go on and on and on. Just to walk past some of them, like Ceasers Palace takes 10 minutes just to walk past, they are absolutely massive. During the day the place looks a bit blandish, but a night it is just a mass of lights. There are people everywhere, still lots of Australians about. The weather is hot, about 35 degrees, so thank god for air conditioning. Have only spent about 10 dollars on the pokies, and that was only to get the free drinks they give you to sit in front of the pokies. we got free tickets to a show at MGM, by listening to some dodgy realestate guy try to sell us timeshare. We bought nothing but got $130 ... read more

North America » United States » Hawaii » Oahu October 7th 2008

The last few days of our Hawai'i expedition were very lazy! Both days consisted of getting up around midday, making our packed lunches and driving to Waimanalo Bay (our favourite on O'ahu). After spending the afternoons playing on the beach and in the sea, we headed back to our hotel room for dinner and entertainment. The only point to note is that we went out to play glow-in-the-dark mini-golf (but it was terrible and not worth our time or money!)... read more

Another fine but cool morning with promise of an OK day ahead.Joined the throngs for breakfast( a bus load had arrived in last night after we arrived ) and it was just as well the ining room was a good size. With what was only a short distance to travel we delayed our start until after Kelly and Regis today. We headed up TN-441 into the Smokies National Park and started the steady climb up to the summit of the road at just over 5000 ft.At the pass named Newfoundland Gap there were people everywhere and two busloads as well as cars. The view out over the changing leaf colours to the distant mountains was beautiful and the smoky nature of the atmosphere lived up to its reputation. At the carpark there were about a doen people paiting ... read more

The second week in California saw me really get into my stride. The enjoyment of coaching various age groups and seeing them enjoying the sessions was a great feeling. A sense that I am out here to help these kids improve as players. This week started in a rather different way to the last. Myself and the other four UK coaches decided to go on a little adventure. This adventure would take us into the heart of California's woodland. The Big Basin. This is home of the famous Redwood tree. These are huge buggers!! The tallest one we saw was 397 metres tall!!! Just 20 metres taller than Peter Crouch. The journey to this forest was quite intense as, the roads leading to the visitor centre were long and windy, with steep hills and sudden bends ... read more

Hanauma Bay, Oahu, Hawaii Monday 6th October 2008 Hanauma is very scenic, as our photos show, however the marine life isn’t as colourful or abundant as the travel guides indicate, or at least wasn’t yesterday. The coral is dull and the green turtles and parrotfish were elsewhere. We saw some nice fish though and John spotted a sea snake. The weather was glorious and despite being a Sunday the bay wasn’t crowded so it was a good day out. One annoying thing was that we were unable to rent fins (or flippers as we Brits like to call them); we took our own masks and snorkels so we just managed without the flippers. This meant that we didn’t venture too far out on the reef, in case of strong currents, but according to others we didn’t ... read more

Ken thinks it's exciting, but I think it is stressful. I went on Eurostar's website yesterday to confirm our train from London to Paris. When I clicked the link, I received the following message: 'This journey has been cancelled offline'. What does that mean? I couldn't find any more information from the website. Since I booked it through 'Eurostar' and not a third party, I could only deal with them and I could not find a phone number. I emailed them and this is the response I received: Thank you for contacting Eurostar. Due to the high volume of e-mails received following the recent fire in the channel tunnel, our normal response time has been affected. We will endeavor to respond to all e-mails as soon as possible. If your e-mail is concerning a Eurostar journey ... read more

Well, here I am, sitting at my kitchen table, awaiting the spring when finally, finally, I will be able to skip off into the freedom of life where I can finally experience all I've been taught and learn my lessons again in an active, adapted fashion. It is so hard to sit and wait, being held back by commitments, though I love to be learning and engaged in education; but how I yearn to be out on the road with my destiny bringing life to the lines on the palms of my hands. I plan, I anticipate, I wait. Oh, the waiting is the hardest part!... read more

Hey there, We are now in cascade, idaho but it started a few days ago car b got to kelowna friday night late, had a few beers with buddy dan and made very intricate plans to ride saturday morning. Saturday morning comes, and we aren't moving very quickly due to the few beers we had friday night, so......breakfast it is. car b has a great ride with buddy dan though, concluding with sheer drops off a rock face that none of us would had attempted had it not been for the trail ahead being slightly obscure.....due to the few beers we had friday night. car b was late, so we had to forego showers, and picked up the motorhome, our castle for the next ten days. motorhome was loaded and we have yet to hear from ... read more
