Monday, October 6, 2008 Reality has caught up with us and we now know that time is not infinite, and this road trip has to come to an end in a few weeks. So we’ve had to regroup with our plans, and give up many places we had at first thought were doable. We also want to continue enjoying the time we have left and linger in the parks still on the ‘must do’ list, not least of which is Grand Canyon. And return home on more secondary roads, avoiding the interstates and keeping to small towns as much as possible. The reality check has also meant turning down a tempting invitation to visit Kayla’s cousin Ron and his wife Carol, who have a lovely second home (and future retirement home) on Lake Tahoe. Next time ... read more

Rapid City, South Dakota We see more of Rapid City this morning as we start our day's activities headed to the Black Hills. Rolling hills of different shapes, sizes, and colors blanket the countryside. It was nice to take a very relaxing morning morning before headeing out, though now running later than we had expected to get our tour stops in. No worries. We will see what we are able to see and leave the rest for other planning. Bear Country USA What a treat this was! For the most part, the animals here live in a pretty natural habitat for their particular species. You slowly drive through each area trying to heed the warning of the greeter to stay in your car and keep windows rolled up. There were warnings posted along the way as ... read more

So I haven't updated my blog with my trip in some time now, Uni here has been crazy busy and time has been short. I thought I'd update a few photos that I have of where I'm living here at the University of Illinois. I'll update some more of these photos of the school soon and then continue on with the regular program. Andrew... read more

I’m writing this at 10pm Tuesday night on the train from Washington DC to Atlanta, I’m currently 3 hours into a 14 hour journey. The trains here are great; you get around three times as much legroom as you would on a British train. The seats recline really far back and the foot rest comes out like a lazy boy. On Monday we caught the train to Washington DC. There's only one night in Washington so had a little wonder around all the government buildings and monuments. The White House is lot smaller than you’d imagine, whilst hanging around outside a line of cars (about 6 police cars and a people carrier with blacked out windows) came by and drove into the white house gate, but I couldn’t see inside to see who it was. Did ... read more

Hello family. So here is the plan. Since I am going to be traveling a lot for the next year or so of my life, I've decided to start a travel blog. Now, you will have to subscribe, but I'll tell you about that later. This is just an easy way for you to get the scope on my travels. Also, I'll be posting pictures too! So it should be fun. I am doing this because besides traveling I am going to be working a lot, so instead of telling you everything on the phone, which could get expensive, I set up this free blog! It is only for you guys. WHen you subscribe you will get an email telling you when I post a new blog and so from any city or country that I ... read more

Saturday 27th September to Tuesday 30th September, 2007 I had every intention prior to my arrival in the United States of utillising what little spare time I was likely to have by exploring this vast country as much as possible. I still have those same intentions but as I perhaps should have expected a combination of other commitments allied to a ‘sod it, the sun’s shining, let’s go the beach’ have meant things haven't quite gone to plan. However, with Phil away for the weekend I was finally prepared myself for my first mini road trip. My intended destination was to be the seaside town of Santa Barbara, one hundred and twenty or so miles north of Long Beach, further north if time permitted via the renowned and ingeniously named Pacific Coast Highway and at just ... read more

Arriving in Bodie is rather eerie, even though we were not the first tourists we were still early enough for it to be quiet. Driving down the dirt road that leads to the deserted mining town you first pass the cemetry on your left and then you see what is left of the once sprawling town on the right. Perched high up on the hill is the mill and mine looming over the houses. We parked and set off with our map on foot following the numbered lots to find out the history behind each one. We started with an old family home, staring through the dusty windows we find that broken chairs, caved in celings, old bottles and crockery stare back at us. I love places like this and already find myself wishing I could ... read more

Oct 7th I get up at 7.15 , dawn, to find the bike troup clearing away breakfast and preparing to set off , they kindly offer me their left over doughnuts and orange juice before setting off to conquer the Emory pass on the road to Kingston (the same route I'll be taking) I bid them farewell and scoff the leftovers. I'm away by 9.15, curiously I pass a group of them heading back to Silver City as I leave town. Today is the toughest perhaps on the whole route, the dreaded Emory pass looms ahead 8328ft , 2,500m the highest point on the whole journey. At 10 miles out I stop at a junction and ponder my options, go right to Deming and shave 30 miles off the journey to El Paso and avoid the ... read more

Enjoyed a yummy cooked breakfast courtesy of Homewood Suites this morning before heading out for our day at the famous San Diego Zoo located in Balboa Park. Decided to take the narrated double-decked tram tour of the zoo first to get an idea of what's what which was very informative and probably saved our feet from a few miles of walking. First stop after that was the Panda's - and for the first time ever we got to see them awake and active. Every other time we have been to a zoo with Pandas all we got to see was their hairy butts, so this was a real bonus. These guys are very very cute, but they were not our favourites. This for me, the best were the Gorillas. The San Diego Zoo has a fairly ... read more
