Well. I am officially back home in the US. But before I talk about that, let me sum up my last week in Israel. Last weekend, after my cousin Lisa left me, I went to my cousins for Shabbat, and then Saturday night, I went back to my friends's house where I had been staying for a few weeks. I spent Sunday with my friend Abigail, walking around town, and just hanging out, and said goodbye to all my friends in the house, pack up my stuff and went to my cousins again, for Pesach. So, Monday night was the seder. I went to my religious cousin's house in Bnei Brak. It was all of my favorite cousins who I have spent a lot of time with over the last 9 months, religious and non religious. ... read more

OD Did a nice 10 miles today. It got cold last night and for the second day we had snow flakes drifting down during breakfast. Was in the high 20s last night. Most of the day it never went much above 40 deg but without the wind of yesterday it made walking very comfortable. Only saw one north bound section hiker about 11:30 and had a couple of weekend hikers stop here for a short chat on their way north. We are about 1/2 mile north of the Shenandoah National Park at about 2500ft. The last couple said the temp tonight might drop into the teens. That is just below what our stuff is rated for, so it will be wear everything you have to bed tonight. Then hope for the best. We have been ... read more

And, I thought my latest adventure to Richmond, VA was all about completing my longest race ever - Ukrop's Monument Ave 10k... hardly an adventure considering my success running the Shamrock Shuffle 8k in Chicago the previous weekend. Pre-race, I had other worries. We all agreed beforehand to dress as superheroes. That meant purchasing or borrowing adult-sized costumes. At first, I chose to be Spiderman, but feared I'd faint if I were to run while covering myself with a skintight outfit from head-to-toe. I ended up exchanging costume ideas with another friend so I could "dress up" as the Incredible Hulk. As the Hulk, all I had to do was buy a few containers of greenery from the local costume shop and I'd be all set, right? Well, if you consider the tradeoff of running ... read more

Getting out of the DC-Metro traffic was a little crazy...once we got to the "open road"' the scenery was gorgeous. Lots of flowering trees and spring beginning to show it's colors. Our first night was spent in Lexington, Virginia. The girls enjoyed swimming in the pool; we ordered pizza and hung out in the hotel room...watching Disney Channel (Phil of the Future). We drove through the quaint town of Lexington on our way out and saw Virginia Military Institute and Washington & Lee University. What a cool town. I have fond memories of going there with my friend, Mary Lackey (now Hernandez) every Mother's Day weekend to visit her grandmother. We were probably in the 5th or 6th grade and could walk all around the town by ourselves...it's such a neat little town, 5th or ... read more

OK, maybe I can't actually win the Tour de Cure, since it's not a race, but I will be riding in it next month. For the second year in a row several of my coworkers put together a team to ride in the American Diabetes Association Tour de Cure. While last year I couldn't make it since I was already planning on riding 400 kilometers the same weekend, this year they made me an offer I couldn't refuse, "Wes, do you think you could design a team jersey? We're giving one away to each rider." Now my drawer may be overstuffed with bike jerseys, but I'll always take another one. (Hey, I wear them so often that they're practically disposable.) But I'd never had the opportunity to actually design my own jersey, although I'd marred ... read more

Apparently we are all cold, hard, and unfriendly in the north. Because everyone waves down here. Driving by in their cars, they wave. And today, my 43 year old perfectly normal husband waved.....at cows. "Y'all are just cold and mean there up north." HA! Anyhow, we went over to the book fair and did some damage. If you've never heard of the Green Valley Book Fair, it's phenomenal. I did tons of laundry and we went to Costco. Not the most exciting day, but tonight we're going to watch a fight and eat shrimp cocktail. And he has papers to grade, while I have papers to write. *sigh* Isn't married life exciting? ... read more

Yes, we did it. Today, Jerry and I went down to the courthouse and got married. Simple. Quick. Practical. It had us written all over it. Then I came home and took a long nap and he worked. We had dinner out with my sister-in-law and her husband, and determined that since I had only packed one pair of shoes (yes, I know, the mind reels) that I needed new ones. I'm loving my new sister-in-law! I got new tennies an a pair of little green heels. Very cute. I know, there's not a whole lot to write about on this eventful day, but the truth is once we were done, it was just like a normal day. We're excited about settling in and being married, but we really can't do that until the move to ... read more

Well, geez, how long has it been? Too long! Much has happened in my personal life, but that's not really important. What's REALLY important is that I've planned my next trip. June 30th through July 8th I will be going to Colonial Williamsburg and the surrounding areas. My friend John and I will be driving up from Atlanta and staying about 1/2 a mile from the Williamsburg "compound". We choose 4th of July because we thought there might be lots of fun celebrations and exhibits to attend in the area. I would just like to very publicly thank John and his mother for the opportunity to take this trip. I would not be able to do so were it not for their immense generosity. Also, I would be up a creek without a paddle without the ... read more

Getting ready to leave home and travel the world with a backpack in less than a month is not easy. In case you'd like to join me or are just interested in how it's done, here's my to do list: - First things first, I need a visa. This unfortunately involves deciding where I want to go first. I chose China because I have a few contacts there, there's a great exchange rate, and I should have the ability to work there, teaching English, if I decide that's what I want to do. Getting the visa was easy given my close location to D.C. Just dropped off my passport (which I already had) and picked up the visa 4 business days later for U.S.$50. - Get a plane ticket. The "around the world" ticket was an ... read more
